[14:38]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: Ask Ton.
[14:38]<wrvne>MickMcMack, commercial f*** fest =)
[14:38]<myrrmrmrrr>Aha, like E3, but for CG?
[14:38]<wrvne>ya
[14:38]<sxjzvwrvn>MickMcMack: http://www.siggraph.org
[14:38]<sxjzvwrvn>MickMcMack: It's also a source of some of the best CG research and techniques
[14:40]<myrrmrmrrr>Why is all the good stuff in the States? :(
[14:41]<bnbzrw>we have got disneyland in europe too :)
[14:42]<myrrmrmrrr>I bet it's half the size of the American one. :x
[14:42]<bfyccyn>paul debevec tends to publish something spectacular on siggraph yeah ;-)
[14:43]<wxzyv>i dont have a /etc/make.conf
[14:43]<bfyccyn>I wouldn't count disneyland as good stuff :D
[14:43]<myrrmrmrrr>Fine, you have stuff like E3.
[14:43]<myrrmrmrrr>We get "GDC Europe".
[14:43]<myrrmrmrrr>Which sucks.
[14:43]<myrrmrmrrr>Quite honestly.
[14:43]<djdjzy-zzgg>xhrit: are you supposed to have one?
[14:44]<myrrmrmrrr>I went to the last two, and they were possibly the worst expos I have _ever_ been to.
[14:44]<myrrmrmrrr>:(
[14:44]<bfyccyn>we have forces that keep microsoft in check
[14:44]<wxzyv>well, where am i supposed to put my cflags then?
[14:44]<myrrmrmrrr>Google? ;)
[14:44]<djdjzy-zzgg>xhrit: in the makefiles
[14:44]<bnbzrw>we have got at least real cars
[14:44]<wxzyv>where at in teh makefiles?
[14:45]<djdjzy-zzgg>look inside, they usually have a variable
[14:45]<djdjzy-zzgg>CFLAGS="-02" etc
[14:45]<bfyccyn>MickMcMack: european regulation
[14:45]<myrrmrmrrr>BeBraw, you still drive on the wrong side of the road. ;)
[14:45]<bnbzrw>MickMcMack: we drive on both sides!
[14:45]<myrrmrmrrr>xDDD
[14:46]<sxjzvwrvn>We should have some interesting surprises on the Renderman front this year :)
[14:47]<wrvne>MickMcMack, you might want to change the blender version number on your doc pages
[14:47]<bfyccyn>ShortWave: nice screenshot
[14:47]<myrrmrmrrr>wavez, yessir I do.
[14:47]<wrvne>=)
[14:49]<wrvne>MickMcMack, so you're rewriting the UI tutorial? I always direct people to that one at blender.org
[14:49]<wrvne>once I had read it, I was off and running
[14:49]<sxjzvwrvn>Whoah...SO VINDICATED I AM!
[14:49]<sxjzvwrvn>http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2006/06/23/immature_hum.html?category=human&guid=20060623110030
[14:49]<sxjzvwrvn>I've been saying this for *years*
[14:49]<myrrmrmrrr>wavez, yes sir, I am. :)
[14:49]<myrrmrmrrr>wavez, timmeh made me! :o
[14:49]<wrvne>ohh
[14:50]<myrrmrmrrr>Well, I half-suggested it in my proposal.
[14:50]<myrrmrmrrr>And he told me I needed to add some more stuff to make it a full-on intro.
[14:51]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: Hrm, nifty
[14:51]<sxjzvwrvn>err
[14:51]<sxjzvwrvn>MickMcMack: Nifty
[14:51]<myrrmrmrrr>Then I move onto the View, and the general layout of the workspaces, etc.
[14:51]<wrvne>MickMcMack, history of blender?
[14:51]<pmv>Hi. I seem to have lost the grid, and so far, I haven't been able to get it back. Could anybody help me out?
[14:52]<myrrmrmrrr>If people at least read that first, they'll have a better chance of not getting stuck on the tuts. :)
[14:52]<myrrmrmrrr>wavez, literally two sentences.
[14:52]<sxjzvwrvn>days, etc.
[14:53]<wrvne>ShortWave, I don't buy this guy's reasoning though
[14:53]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: me neither.
[14:53]<myrrmrmrrr>ShortWave remembers the birth of the universe. :)
[14:53]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: I agree with the assessment, but not the cause.
[14:53]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: See, I also think that our society (american society in particular) has largely removed the major reasons for people to become mature individuals.
[14:54]<myrrmrmrrr>Kids should do some mandatory form of labour.
[14:54]<myrrmrmrrr>Like working as a builder or something.
[14:54]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: There's far too much dependence also on perspective narcissism...that being "What will people think of me?"
[14:54]<myrrmrmrrr>Just for a few months of their life.
[14:54]<sxjzvwrvn>Seriously, if you actually care what people think of you, then you're not going to have a happy life.
[14:55]<myrrmrmrrr>So true, ShortWave.
[14:55]<wrvne>ShortWave, ya, I think I agree with that
[14:56]<wrvne>I've always thought it's interesting that so many kids will work hard in school (or not), and never figure what they want to do with their life
[14:56]<sxjzvwrvn>Obviously a sense of balance is neccessary...because the extreme end of that it means being a sociopath.
[14:56]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: that is confusing.
[14:56]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: Tho the schools aren't making it any better.
[14:56]<wrvne>right
[14:57]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: There's no longer a reason in american schools to attempt to excel.
[14:57]<sxjzvwrvn>wavez: Because by federal law, you CAN'T.
[14:57]<wrvne>heh
[14:57]<sxjzvwrvn>So it comes down to personal drive.
[14:57]<wrvne>ya... well that's why there is so much of a shift to homeschools and charter schools
[14:57]<sxjzvwrvn>You have to have the drive to educate yourself and excel beyond what the schools accept.
[14:57]<sxjzvwrvn>true
[14:58]<sxjzvwrvn>Kinds coming out of college are becoming more and more braindead.
[14:58]<sxjzvwrvn>And they expect to make extreme salaries.
[14:58]<wrvne>ya. You know, this is really reasonating with something that I'm going through right now
[14:58]<sxjzvwrvn>A college degree is no longer a fast-track to a great job.
[14:58]<wrvne>I just got a new job at an internet company
[14:59]<myrrmrmrrr>I need a job. :(
[14:59]<sxjzvwrvn>yeah?
[14:59]<wrvne>and I'm not a scholarly kind of person
[14:59]<wrvne>but I got the job because of connections, and I seem smart enough to them
[14:59]<sxjzvwrvn>heh
[14:59]<wrvne>but they have these other positions available
[14:59]<wrvne>and they've been trying to fill them with educated, trained people
[14:59]<sxjzvwrvn>I don't actually have a college education.
[15:00]<wrvne>but they couldn't hire any of the applicants, because they were all too stupid, and asked for too much money!
[15:00]<myrrmrmrrr>ShortWave, you're old, it wasn't a norm back in your day, surely? Not like it is these days.
[15:00]<sxjzvwrvn>But oddly I have more knowledge about engineering and such than some of our junior engineers.
[15:00]<myrrmrmrrr>As in, it wasn't the norm to go to university. *
[15:00]<sxjzvwrvn>Yeah but
[15:01]<sxjzvwrvn>I joined the military to learn to be an electronics repair tech.
[15:01]<sxjzvwrvn>Trouble with that is that I could have taken the CET and passed it *before* I got the training. I had already learned it.
[15:01]<sxjzvwrvn>I wound up with the second highest GPA in the entire school's history.
