[20:17]<msxjv>heh, network gear is always easier than explaining large iron costs + say Oracle per-CPU licensing ( just an example )
[20:18]<[mzvzyw]>damn, bet that's some old IOS
[20:18]<msxjv>on some equip I don't manage, but I pull some stats from... runs 10.x
[20:18]<vd2r>for you guys. for my work it's the opposite. they spend asstons on software and not too much on network infrastructure. the one that's REALLY hard for them is spending money on troubleshooting software/hardware tools
[20:18]<msxjv>it's like from 1997
[20:18]<msxjv>yeah, tmbg I've seen that too
[20:18]<dffnw>heh, no one wants to admit to managing it
[20:19]<dffnw>we had one up for 4+ years before we replaced it
[20:19]<[mzvzyw]>lol
[20:19]<msxjv>then again, the windows duders here have Norton on everything turned up to the highest setting, so when we went to a near fully-gigabit infrastructure and were still getting 10Mb speeds between their shit, nobody even questions it
[20:19]<dffnw>WS-C3750G-48PS-E. MSRP, $23490.00.
[20:20]<msxjv>so, now I understand why people don't spend $$ on the network side
[20:20]<msxjv>here anyway
[20:20]<[mzvzyw]>mplex: ouch
[20:20]<dffnw>just an example
[20:20]<msxjv>$23k, hmm
[20:21]<dffnw>thats list with enterprise software, but still
[20:21]<msxjv>that doesn't seem right at all
[20:22]<[mzvzyw]>It's only $12,719 from lanstreet.com
[20:22]<[mzvzyw]>and that's with the enhanced image
[20:22]<dffnw>Im not sure how old that price is anyways
[20:22]<[mzvzyw]>wow, I just put "only" in front of "$12,719"
[20:22]<dffnw>still, 12k is a lot
[20:22]<vd2r>it'll be neat when the next big thing comes out and 3750s are the new 3550s. then I'll probably be in love with the things.
[20:23]<dffnw>for an access layer switch
[20:23]<dffnw>$250 a port
[20:23]<[mzvzyw]>I've got 3500XL's for my access layer. ;;
[20:23]<[mzvzyw]>and some 2900XL's for that matter
[20:23]<msxjv>hehe
[20:23]<msxjv>I hate those fucking things, seriously
[20:23]<vd2r>do you guys conform to the 3 layer model? we sort of do, but mainly have core and skip distribution and go straight to access a lot of times.
[20:23]<dffnw>we have all 2924s still
[20:24]<dffnw>and some synoptics still out there ;)
[20:24]<msxjv>synoptics, jesus
[20:24]<msxjv>they had 3COM 1999'ers here
[20:24]<[mzvzyw]>My network is tiny.
[20:24]<msxjv>aka, wow your network is trash
[20:24]<msxjv>swapped it all out though
[20:24]<dffnw>in some places, absolutely
[20:24]<[mzvzyw]>it's like, layer 3 core, layer 2 access. That's it.
[20:24]<vd2r>dshot: you hate 3500's?
[20:25]<msxjv>XL's
[20:25]<msxjv>yeah
[20:25]<dffnw>large bearuocracy
[20:25]<[mzvzyw]>actually, I have no core. It's like layer 3 distribution, layer 2 access.
[20:25]<vd2r>I hate them too.
[20:25]<vd2r>I don't really like any of the smaller switches I've been on. the around 24-48 port stuff.
[20:25]<[mzvzyw]>and the 5500 is my "fast" distribution switch.
[20:26]<msxjv>I have to wonder about 24-port fixed anymore
[20:26]<msxjv>if it's even worth it
[20:26]<dffnw>depends on the setup
[20:26]<dffnw>some places around here, 24 ports is overkill
[20:26]<[mzvzyw]>dang
[20:27]<dffnw>other places have 1000 nodes in the closet
[20:27]<msxjv>yeah, definitely, but the other thing on my mind is musical chairs type shit.. like if I need to swap things around in a bad emergency
[20:27]<msxjv>I start thinking, hmm, yeah 24 porter would be not good if I had to swap things around somehow
[20:27]<msxjv>even though I have 24x7x4
[20:29]<vz2ufzzzsz>im fixing the stupidest shit today its sad
[20:29]<msxjv>Try me, and I'll see if I can top the idiocy
[20:29]<vd2r>tab: I had to run around turning off "switchport speed nonegotiate" once.
[20:29]<[mzvzyw]>I'm dealing with Tab's stuff, I win.
[20:29]<[mzvzyw]>;)
[20:29]<vd2r>how is it that like 5 of you work in the same place?
[20:30]<vz2ufzzzsz>dshot: im trying to walk a user through entering a WEP key
[20:30]<[mzvzyw]>FBH took Sam's job, and I took Tab's job.
[20:30]<dffnw>you all work in the same place?
[20:30]<vd2r>damn. small world.
[20:30]<vz2ufzzzsz>and she is too fucking stupid to find control panel
[20:30]<[mzvzyw]>dang
[20:31]<vz2ufzzzsz>s/dobs/sobs
[20:31]<msxjv>heh, well, I can't top that per se... but I was working on establishing a simple manual key IPSec tunnel with a duder and he sent me the large hex keys... low and behold Juniper's GUI shat that I have to use ( don't ask ) has the key broken into 4 fields of 16
[20:31]<vz2ufzzzsz>bah.... you guys are rubbing that shit off on people
[20:31]<vd2r>fbh: yeah but you know what I mean.
[20:31]<msxjv>and then for the auth, it's broken up by like some variable amount
[20:31]<dffnw>I hate guis, I havnt found a good one yet
[20:32]<msxjv>yep
[20:32]<vz2ufzzzsz>enlightenment?
[20:32]<msxjv>I'm running Enlightenment
[20:32]<vz2ufzzzsz>:)
[20:32]<dffnw>seems like every few years, cisco comes out with a new management gui then cans it
[20:33]<msxjv>of course, I ran Enlightenment way way back 0.12 or something when it was pretty much sex on low-end Sun hardware.. the dithering was incredible for shitty 8-bit built-in graphics
[20:33]<vd2r>the ciscoworks that I use (the java one) is nice but slow. a bit tedious to add device support as well.
[20:33]<sjpnprpm>good morning all.. i have few questions, but i am pretty network illiterate, so what i ask my not make much sense :)
[20:33]<vd2r>solefald: ask away
[20:33]<sjpnprpm>sweet thanks.
[20:33]<vz2ufzzzsz>dshot: tried e17 ?
[20:33]<vd2r>we all are at varying stages of illiteracy as well ;)
[20:34]<msxjv>I'm running 0.16.0999.022
[20:34]<msxjv>or some shit on this laptop
[20:34]<msxjv>I haven't checked anything out of CVS for months
[20:35]<msxjv>Newer version much sexier, I take it?
[20:35]<sjpnprpm>ok, so we have a redundant circuit from AT&T and on their end they have it configured with VRRP. on our end we have 2 2960's and 2 firewalls. one on each switch for basic hardware redundancy. now, AT&T claims
[20:35]<vz2ufzzzsz>this lady can't even read the work "authentication"
[20:35]<sjpnprpm>that we need to have both of the cables attached to the same switch in order for their VRRP config to work
[20:36]<vz2ufzzzsz>dshot: e17 is WAY sexy
[20:36]<sjpnprpm>does this make sense?
[20:36]<msxjv>if I get bored I'll check it out of CVS and compile it
[20:36]<dffnw>I havnt used E in 5 years
[20:36]<vz2ufzzzsz>hmmm they changed the name
