[04:53]<mggjg>hmm, think I'm missing somethin - eth route doesnt seem to work
[04:55]<vwcd>sometimes you plop systems in 192.168.1.0/24 onto a segment already using 192.168.0.0/24. sometimes the easiest way is to give the router the same address as the old router, as a secondary. this means no hosts have to be changed, since static configurations are so common.
[04:56]<vwcd>if instead you are adding addresses in a newly acquired netblock to hosts then the static route can work fine, because the host already has a route back via their existing (primary) address.
[04:57]<mggjg>so if I have a route, with that subnet, pointing back to eth0..
[04:57]<mggjg>eh, not sure how it finds the gateway that way
[04:58]<gndyvx>it won't
[04:58]<gndyvx>but the router will probably proxy-arp it
[04:58]<mggjg>even if router #2 isnt directly-attached?
[04:59]<mggjg>(attached via a switch)
[04:59]<mggjg>with a million other devices
[05:00]<gndyvx>depends
[05:00]<gndyvx>if the router hears an arp for something that should be outside the subnet
[05:00]<gndyvx>it will answer the arp and then route
[05:00]<mggjg>you mean, incoming to the "old" router in this case
[05:01]<gndyvx>i said nothing of a router
[05:01]<gndyvx>well old or new
[05:01]<gndyvx>never mind actually
[05:02]<mggjg>hehe
[05:04]<vcul>twkm, how do you keep up with all the tabs? you're on most IRC servers!
[05:04]<mggjg>hehe, I always enjoy watching him in #c
[05:04]<mggjg>very educational
[05:04]<mggjg>er, ##c
[05:04]<vwcd>tkup: activity indicators!
[05:05]<vwcd>(besides, i'm on relatively few channels)
[05:05]<mggjg>so I think I'm kinda still missing my destination ..
[05:05]<mggjg>(or at least nemith has managed to confuse my tired mind)
[05:06]<vcul>twkm, i wonder how your home lab looks like
[05:06]<vcul>:)
[05:07]<vwcd>i don't have a home lab.
[05:07]<vwcd>denon: replacing a router should be easier than this. are you discarding the router and consolidating the configuration onto another?
[05:07]<vcul>hmm interesting
[05:08]<mggjg>twkm: there will be a point when both (well, all) of their providers will be up ..
[05:08]<mggjg>they'll be binding IPs to both .. for days, weeks, whatever
[05:08]<mggjg>and then eventually old router will go away, as will old providers
[05:09]<mggjg>(at that point we'll change the gateway to the new router, and dump the old IP bindings)
[05:10]<mggjg>I'm just trying to give them a smooth way to move things slowly
[05:11]<vwcd>denon: well, then i think you'll want a secondary address on the interface.
[05:11]<mggjg>k, that I've done
[05:12]<mggjg>but also a route?
[05:13]<vwcd>well, the secondary address causes a connected route to appear.
[05:14]<mggjg>so, from the old router itself, I should be able to ping the new router, right?
[05:14]<mggjg>(because I can't)
[05:15]<mggjg>and trying to ping the old router alias, I'm getting a destination host unreachable
[05:15]<mggjg>(from new router0
[05:18]<vwcd>perhaps it would be useful to provide some specifics now.
[05:21]<mggjg>heh, sorry to waste your time - just called the client, turns out they moved one router outside the firewall
[05:21]<mggjg>(so, of course, they cant communicate directly)
[05:21]<vwcd>heh.
[05:22]<mggjg>so I'll figure out how to get their firewall to communicate with the new router instead, tomorrow
[05:52]<gjsw>Hey guys, is there a way to change the mac address of an ethernet interface on a 870-W broadband router?
[05:53]<kz0gvr2>heya folks... good evening
[06:03]<2drrrxrg>nosx: try the interface command "mac-address"
[06:50]<gndyvx>ho hum
[07:01]<srd-i-rd>meh
[09:37]<rrsnd>Hey guys, how do I restrict the web interface on a 2960 to a specific range of IPs?
[09:42]<vwcd>the usual way, with an access class or by enabling secure client auth.
[09:44]<vwcd>e.g., ip http access-class 10, or ip http secure-client-auth.
[09:51]<fnajcnz>hello
[09:51]<fnajcnz>i have a problem on my router cisco 2600
[09:52]<rrsnd>twkm: I just type that into ios like so?
[09:53]<vwcd>lejoker: you should probably describe it, rather than hoping our esp starts working.
[09:53]<fnajcnz>ok
[09:53]<vwcd>casey: sure. the latter requires you setup pki stuff first.
[09:53]<fnajcnz>my router start with minicom
[09:54]<rrsnd>twkm: what's the difference between the two?
[09:54]<fnajcnz>twkm
[09:54]<vwcd>casey: as i said, one is an access class and the other enables secure client auth(entication).
[09:54]<rrsnd>twkm: I don't really need the switch interface to be directly accessible from the internet, I don't mind routing over an SSH tunnel to get to it.
[09:55]<rrsnd>what does 'access class' mean?
[09:55]<rrsnd>secure client auth as in https?
[09:55]<vwcd>casey: perhaps the access class would be easiest and sufficiently functional.
[09:55]<fnajcnz>my router begin and after the sense get started return
[09:56]<fnajcnz>he said a message like updown ethernet0/1, 0/0 and serial 0/1
[09:56]<fnajcnz>i have any prompt for administration and i known a ip of router
[09:57]<vwcd>casey: yes, https and with a client certificate, signed by your ca.
[09:57]<fnajcnz>twkm ???
[09:57]<fnajcnz>you not answer my question
[09:57]<fnajcnz>??
[09:58]<vwcd>lejoker: i'm not sure what problem you are stating. when a router is started without a configuration it will prompt you to try a simplistic setup.
[09:58]<vwcd>lejoker: interfaces going up or down are displayed so you know the status of your interfaces.
[09:58]<fnajcnz>no i bought my router on ebay
[09:59]<rrsnd>lejoker: why don't you reset it?
[09:59]<fnajcnz>i have any prompt
[09:59]<vwcd>lejoker: so the configuration should be empty.
[09:59]<vwcd>lejoker: press the enter or return key on your terminal. perhaps twice.
[09:59]<fnajcnz>how do you this please ?
[10:00]<fnajcnz>i not undertand
[10:00]<fnajcnz>understand
[10:00]<fnajcnz>i am french
[10:01]<vwcd>lejoker: is there a question displayed?
[10:03]<fnajcnz>2 seconds please
[10:05]<vwcd>sure, take your time.
[10:12]<fnajcnz>i'am started my router
[10:13]<fnajcnz>twkm you speak french
[10:13]<vwcd>lejoker: sorry, no.
[10:13]<vwcd>lejoker: what is the last line you see?
[10:15]<fnajcnz>mar 1 00:00:18: %link-5-changed: Interface serial0/1, changed state to administration
