[02:13]<msxjv>nice to have a bunch of PAs around
[02:13]<msxjv>at the very least
[02:14]<gndyvx>well time to go home
[02:16]<j2rgvr_>dshot: I'm going to do the CCIE R&S and CCIE Security ones.
[02:17]<j2rgvr_>possibly s/Security/Voice/
[02:18]<vcul>does anyone know akamai's console settings?
[02:19]<msxjv>nice
[02:20]<vcul>on switches
[02:25]<dzzc1lyvn>obanta_ you want to get dual CCIE's?
[02:26]<vcul>is there any guide on how I can reset a switch's console settings?
[02:27]<sazdn>a very powerful magnet.
[02:29]<dzzc1lyvn>lol
[02:30]<j2rgvr_>Dark3Lite: I'd like three, since I support all the technologies for R&S, Security, and Voice. But we'll go one at a time :)
[02:31]<dzzc1lyvn>aiight nice
[02:33]<vcul>Scrye, I really thought you were commenting on the dual ccie's. dual -> magnet -> etc
[02:33]<j2rgvr_>I passed the R&S written in 2002 and got a new job shortly after so I never was able to prepare enough (to my liking) to pass the lab.
[02:33]<j2rgvr_>So now I have to retake the written, which I'm planning on doing at Networkers.
[02:34]<sazdn>i was kidding about the magnet
[02:34]<dzzc1lyvn>ah nice.
[02:34]<dzzc1lyvn>wish you all the best..
[02:34]<2zrgvj>obanta: it has changed... big time. it is harder than it used to be... hope you've been studying
[02:35]<dzzc1lyvn>branto: you planning on taking it?
[02:35]<2zrgvj>yeah
[02:35]<dzzc1lyvn>so what do you currently hold?
[02:36]<dzzc1lyvn>CCDA, CCDP, CCNP?
[02:36]<2zrgvj>I took mine last year, being all cocky, thinking I didn't need to study for it...
[02:36]<2zrgvj>WRONG
[02:36]<2zrgvj>no certs
[02:36]<2zrgvj>I took the written back in 2/2001 and passed, though
[02:36]<vcul>i'm going for it
[02:36]<vcul>ccna that is...
[02:37]<vcul>you pass it but you still suck
[02:37]<dzzc1lyvn>hmm no certs and you can take the CCNP writen?
[02:37]<dzzc1lyvn>CCIE written..that is..
[02:37]<2zrgvj>CCIE written
[02:37]<2zrgvj>yeah
[02:37]<2zrgvj>there aren't prerequisites
[02:38]<dzzc1lyvn>hmm really..
[02:39]<vcul>i wonder how you guys get entry level jobs in networking nowadays without having at least one cert
[02:40]<msxjv>who guys?
[02:40]<j2rgvr_>branto: I'll be studying for the next month, I've also gotten a lot more valuable experience since the last time I took it so hopefully that helps :)
[02:40]<dzzc1lyvn>hmm tkup
[02:40]<dzzc1lyvn>skill
[02:41]<msxjv>I don't have any certs
[02:41]<zzwffzdnz>certs != skill
[02:41]<msxjv>unless you want to count some really lame ones that basically state I went to the classes
[02:41]<msxjv>like Veritas Cluster Server
[02:42]<msxjv>Sun Cluster
[02:42]<msxjv>etc
[02:42]<msxjv>To be honest, not even that long ago most places I knew of shunned certs
[02:42]<msxjv>CCIE is special
[02:42]<2zrgvj>exactly... chasing a cert for the sake of a cert put the emphasis on the wrong thing
[02:42]<msxjv>but the rest, zero care.. more worried about operational experience
[02:42]<2zrgvj>err, puts
[02:43]<vcul>can you have operational experience for entry level jobs?
[02:43]<dzzc1lyvn>going after the cert and you the skill is special.
[02:43]<dzzc1lyvn>CCIE is neat..
[02:43]<msxjv>ahh so you're just talking entry level... yeah, just skill
[02:43]<msxjv>interview and show someone you have skill
[02:44]<sazdn>a+ is a detrator
[02:44]<msxjv>sometimes companies just want a CS degree or something like that.. but yeah
[02:44]<2zrgvj>ccie is neat, but by no means the end of the road... there are so many people out there who dont' bother with a ccie, because they don't work on cisco gear, but are DEADLY on their own.
[02:44]<vcul>you can't really do that on interview day unless you can talk people into believing you have skil
[02:44]<sazdn>CCIE is an somthing you give people more money for
[02:45]<msxjv>even if you do work on Cisco gear, it's a journey, not a destination
[02:45]<msxjv>you sort of have to want to take it
[02:45]<2zrgvj>only reason I'm pursuing it is so I can go and start my own consulting firm... makes getting funding much easier
[02:45]<vcul>branto, funding for what?
[02:45]<2zrgvj>my own consulting firm
[02:46]<msxjv>the R&S right now is finally on my plate because I have time and it's a goal
[02:46]<vcul>oh you mean networking job = good money = funding?
[02:46]<j2rgvr_>makes the hourly rate you can charge a bit higher too :)
[02:46]<msxjv>frankly, it's a good way of forcing me to learn some new things too
[02:46]<msxjv>because I'm terribly bored
[02:46]<2zrgvj>jobs are a dime a dozen, once you have experience...
[02:46]<msxjv>yep, you can configure routers/switches anywhere
[02:46]<vcul>well, i first got interested in cisco stuff while i was in college and since then convinced myself to continue on studying it
[02:47]<2zrgvj>it's more like.. "hey, I'll design a new network for you for 100K"
[02:47]<2zrgvj>and then I'll manage it for you, remotely, for 15K/year...
[02:48]<2zrgvj>and I'll stick a router-jockey onsite for you for another 150K/year
[02:48]<msxjv>I'm not really in the CCIE stuff for the money per se, I mean if I find I can swing full-time consulting and I enjoy it.. great.. but I already top-out without a CCIE salary-wise. I can't imagine it going up, like I said.. without some sort of weird compensation plan type deal
[02:48]<sazdn>ccie == instant job
[02:48]<2zrgvj>ccie !=instant job
[02:49]<sazdn>sure it is
[02:49]<msxjv>why would anyone care about an instant job though?
[02:49]<2zrgvj>it really isn't, though
[02:49]<sazdn>it means you are instantly employable
[02:49]<j2rgvr_>Even during the downtime a couple of years ago, the lab rats taht got their CCIEs while unemployed were able to find jobs after getting their CCIE.
[02:49]<msxjv>I could've taken 4 opportunities in the last 3 weeks, zero CCIE, the jobs were meh really.
[02:49]<j2rgvr_>(with no real experience)
[02:50]<msxjv>and I'm in a terrible market
[02:50]<sazdn>so move
[02:50]<j2rgvr_>dshot: Where are you at?
[02:50]<msxjv>CCIE for me won't change instant jobs, but hopefully would make some more interesting doors open
[02:50]<msxjv>Up in Oregon atm
[02:50]<2zrgvj>experience is really what dictates your employability
[02:50]<j2rgvr_>I bet Nebraska is worse :)
[02:50]<msxjv>up from being in the Bay Area for a long time
[02:51]<msxjv>=P
