[03:00]<gndyvx>with a completly different layer 2 header
[03:00]<gndyvx>like an ATM cell
[03:00]<znzwzzn>wont those fields be coppied rather?
[03:00]<znzwzzn>the values of the fields?
[03:01]<sag>jerware: think of what in a ethernet header .. srcmac, dstmac, crc in the tail .. that's about it.
[03:01]<xud2jfv>how can I find out on the cli if I have a NPE-G1 installed?
[03:01]<gndyvx>show diag
[03:01]<sag>srcmac is the new router .. dstmac is the next router .. the crc consists of both, so it will change too.
[03:01]<sag>but the entire layer3 -packet will, given a sufficient mtu, be in the layer2 frame.
[03:02]<gndyvx>so it'd medium dependant
[03:02]<xud2jfv>found it
[03:04]<sazdn>where can i get a gbic
[03:04]<fjzvxnz>Scrye: what media?
[03:04]<sazdn>copper
[03:04]<cuvyncjmnz>nemith: let alone SONET/SDH :P
[03:04]<sazdn>i cant find any local
[03:04]<fjzvxnz>i have two of them here, i may be able to part with one
[03:04]<sazdn>i need 2
[03:04]<sazdn>heh
[03:05]<fjzvxnz>you could always try ebay, but beware of fakes
[03:05]<sazdn>i was looking for somthing like CDW
[03:05]<sazdn>but obviously, not CDW.
[03:06]<`kgvyg>whats a good pix 'cisco press' book to start with?
[03:06]<`kgvyg>few of them..
[03:06]<cuvyncjmnz>PIX... ewwwww
[03:07]<cuvyncjmnz>that's definitely one thing cisco did... way wrong
[03:07]<sazdn>they bought it
[03:07]<fjzvxnz>i don't care for pix os much
[03:07]<sazdn>they didnt do it heh
[03:07]<fjzvxnz>but they're slowly but surely making it more IOS-like
[03:07]<xud2jfv>I have a really ugly problem here: I have a client connected to a c3750g and my router connected as on a fiber port. if i ping the client 500 times from the switch no dropped packages no latency. same if i ping the router. but if I ping the client from the router I have considerable latency and lots of lost packages?!
[03:07]<sazdn>its nothing but a damned PC inside
[03:07]<gndyvx>CutieCoder: yeah
[03:07]<gndyvx>CutieCoder: don't like the pix eh?
[03:07]<fjzvxnz>it is a pc booting from flash
[03:08]<sazdn>humbolt : duplex?
[03:08]<gndyvx>I think the pix isn't bad, the UI has gotten a lot better in 7.0
[03:08]<fjzvxnz>pci bus
[03:08]<fjzvxnz>yeah, 7 is a lot better than 6.
[03:08]<fjzvxnz>all the boxes at work run 6, and i have 7.1 loaded on my pix here to fool around with
[03:09]<gndyvx>Scrye: i thought your router was a PC
[03:09]<sazdn>no
[03:09]<sazdn>we have all our parts made for us
[03:09]<sazdn>because it has a x86 cpu in it doesnt make it a PC
[03:09]<gndyvx>and the pix hasn't had a used a intel mb since mid 90's
[03:10]<gndyvx>it just happens to use a x86 cpu
[03:10]<gndyvx>pix history is actually kinda cool
[03:10]<fjzvxnz>from who did cisco buy the pix technology?
[03:10]<gndyvx>the reason it is called a pix or Private internet exchange is because it was really just a nat device
[03:10]<gndyvx>it was the first nat device
[03:11]<gndyvx>loather: Network Translation, Inc. :P
[03:14]<fjzvxnz>heh, the older pix are huge.
[03:14]<gndyvx>http://home.cfl.rr.com/dealgroup/pix/pix_page_history.htm <-- good read
[03:14]<gndyvx>loather: yeah, those are pc based
[03:14]<fjzvxnz>we have a bunch of old 510s at work
[03:15]<fjzvxnz>or maybe they're 515s. i don't know.
[03:15]<fjzvxnz>i never have to do anything with them :D
[03:17]<gndyvx>the ones with the door that hides the floppy/
[03:17]<gndyvx>i love those :P
[03:18]<fjzvxnz>yeah, the little screw-off door
[03:18]<gndyvx>yeah
[03:18]<fjzvxnz>they're in what looks like the same chassis as the old local directors
[03:18]<gndyvx>Pix Classic
[03:19]<gndyvx>the loacal directors were really reverse pixes
[03:19]<gndyvx>they did nat for load balancing
[03:19]<gndyvx>LD's and pixes ran the same OS
[03:20]<fjzvxnz>i didn't know that.
[03:20]<gndyvx>LD's were also (one of) the first load balancers
[03:20]<fjzvxnz>we have a couple of those old local directors, too, but again, never logged into them.
[03:20]<fjzvxnz>all the machines behind them have been turned off and unracked in preparation for the transition
[03:21]<gndyvx>yeah no need
[03:21]<gndyvx>just trade them in for new gear
[03:21]<gndyvx>or sell them to [Matrix_]
[03:21]<gndyvx>he loves old cisco hardware
[03:22]<sazdn>hes prolly to 'po to afford the good stuff
[03:22]<sazdn>po'
[03:22]<fjzvxnz>cisco has a trade-up plan?
[03:22]<gndyvx>yeah
[03:22]<fjzvxnz>'cause i have probably 4 local directors and at least that many css 11051s.
[03:22]<gndyvx>welll LD's were never really good or great
[03:23]<gndyvx>early CSS's weren't that great either
[03:23]<sazdn>you can DoS a LD pretty easily heh
[03:23]<fjzvxnz>no, these CSS do the job, but they're a bitch to work with
[03:24]<sazdn>loather : what you want for one of those LD's
[03:24]<fjzvxnz>i have to check and see if i can sell them first
[03:24]<sazdn>i'll give you 20$
[03:24]<fjzvxnz>if i can, i'll see what i can work out
[03:25]<sazdn>heh
[03:25]<sazdn>im a cheap ass
[03:25]<djuxxx>i m looking to buy pix
[03:29]<sazdn>i think i'll go swimming
[03:29]<djuxxx>u live in fl?
[03:29]<sazdn>no, vancouver, bc
[03:29]<djuxxx>it's hella humid in ft lauderdale
[03:29]<sazdn>ive got a heated pool
[03:29]<djuxxx>i want a freezer pool lol
[03:30]<sazdn>i wonder if they have those
[03:30]<sazdn>Pool AC
