[21:16]<gjsw>My experience are most sybex and thompson books are TRASH.
[21:16]<gndyvx>Cisco press
[21:16]<dzzc1lyvn>I have the Cisco Press..but reading the Knowledgenet Student Guide..
[21:16]<gjsw>the cisco press books have a few errors but are BY FAR BETTER than anybody else.
[21:16]<djzwzvnz>Cisco press is good stuff; and they're funny
[21:16]<dzzc1lyvn>haha
[21:16]<gndyvx>but i've had really good sybex books (JNCIA book was excepent)
[21:16]<gndyvx>it depends on the author
[21:16]<fjfkyffr>how so funny?
[21:16]<dzzc1lyvn>but I find Clare Gough can't writ..
[21:16]<dzzc1lyvn>write..
[21:16]<djzwzvnz>sometimes the author has a sense of humor
[21:16]<gndyvx>i've had some really dull and crappy ciscopress books
[21:16]<fjfkyffr>ohh ok
[21:17]<gjsw>The tech editors at certain big publishers like sybex and thompson are morons. they publish crap like the 6 layer OSI model or a bgp flow chart that never sends the packet.
[21:17]<fjzvxnz>DogWater: i do lots of mrtg.
[21:17]<gndyvx>if you look at my bookcase
[21:17]<djzwzvnz>my statistics book, now that is a crappy text
[21:17]<dzzc1lyvn>nemith: for the BSCI..the one by Clare Gough did you read it?
[21:17]<djzwzvnz>loather: i'm trying to find a way to make it generate filenames that relate to the slot/port instead of a random OID number so I can reference them programmatically
[21:17]<gndyvx>FBH^^: no ..
[21:17]<dzzc1lyvn>well your bookcase is all Cisco Press nemith
[21:17]<gndyvx>FBH^^: i am crazy but i really get into my books
[21:17]<gndyvx>like crazy get into them
[21:18]<gjsw>read harry potter lol
[21:18]<djzwzvnz>such as ip.ad.dre.ss_5/15.html
[21:18]<djzwzvnz>instead of ip.ad.dre.ss_82.html
[21:18]<vd2r>DogWater: we used to use mrtg. use ciscoworks and solarwinds now.
[21:18]<fjzvxnz>DogWater: hm... mainly i've just set up templates to poll off cpu, memory, and interface traffic statistics
[21:18]<dzzc1lyvn>FBH^ just go an read
[21:18]<dzzc1lyvn>stop ranting and raving..
[21:18]<dzzc1lyvn>read..
[21:19]<dzzc1lyvn>your
[21:19]<dzzc1lyvn>book
[21:19]<dzzc1lyvn>now
[21:19]<fjzvxnz>DogWater: as far as something like that goes, you can probably script it pretty easily with some perl
[21:19]<dzzc1lyvn>harry potter sucks
[21:19]<fjzvxnz>anyhow, i have to go ... i have an interview in an hour
[21:19]<gjsw>omfg i was joking.
[21:19]<gndyvx>FBH^^: when reading I start imagining how it would fit in my network
[21:19]<djzwzvnz>tmbg: Hm, is that acceptable for 'end-user' graphs?
[21:19]<gndyvx>or how i would design it for X
[21:19]<vd2r>solarwinds? absolutely.
[21:19]<gjsw>Routing TCP/IP volume 1 was an entertaining read =P go memorize it.
[21:19]<gndyvx>and it really gets me into it
[21:19]<gndyvx>I am a geek like that
[21:19]<vd2r>it kicks ass at graphing.
[21:19]<vd2r>not free though.
[21:19]<gndyvx>Jeff Doyle is a great author
[21:20]<gndyvx>solarwinds graphs are horrible
[21:20]<gndyvx>bleh
[21:20]<vd2r>bah. I like them WAY better than mrtg.
[21:20]<djzwzvnz>tmbg: basically i'm trying to make an easy way to give my customers access to their traffic stats without me having to manually create MRTG graphs and then copy them to a directory on my webserver (ugh)
[21:20]<vd2r>far easier to set up too.
[21:20]<gndyvx>yeah
[21:20]<dzzc1lyvn>nemith: check and see if you have any by Clare Gough
[21:20]<gjsw>tmbg, have you used RRDTool? Its so much better than mrtg etc. and its free. configurable to poll alot more.
[21:20]<gndyvx>but thats it.. orion doesn't do much more than that
[21:20]<fjfkyffr>cacti is sexy indeeed
[21:20]<gjsw>there is a good web management app for it called cacti.
[21:20]<vd2r>yeah we used RRDtool in conjuction with MRTG.
[21:20]<gndyvx>some crappy grahps and interface polling
[21:20]<djzwzvnz>FBH^^: cacti makes sexy stats but it doesnt update the portsautomatically
[21:20]<gndyvx>whoopdy fucking do
[21:20]<gjsw>I just think MRTG is kinda trashy these days.
[21:21]<gndyvx>for the price.. .orion blows
[21:21]<gndyvx>imho
[21:21]<gjsw>other tools are alot better. to bill bandwidth we use RRDtool and ANTG.
[21:21]<vd2r>yeah it's expensive.
[21:21]<gndyvx>but
[21:21]<gjsw>and ya orion sucks, it doesnt let u do real custom polling.
[21:21]<gndyvx>I heard they are adding trap support (fucking finally)
[21:21]<gjsw>If i know the OID i should be able to snmp it
[21:21]<djzwzvnz>and there is no way to have it only poll from certain interface types, or whether the interface is up/down
[21:21]<gndyvx>and If i could graph on custom mibs
[21:21]<djzwzvnz>FBH^^: i have to take adderall every day or i cant function
[21:22]<djzwzvnz>yes
[21:22]<vd2r>I used to be on time release ritalin.
[21:22]<gndyvx>or alert on lets say... neighbor changes
[21:22]<gjsw>lol a bunch of speed freaks.
[21:22]<vd2r>nosx: no, I have bad ADD.
[21:22]<gndyvx>I need to write a program that polls neighbor information from routers
[21:22]<gjsw>cisco should start selling free meth with all smartnet contracts =P
[21:22]<sxrmns>tmbg, adderal 8 D
[21:22]<vd2r>I can't focus on one thing, I start like 10 projects and never finish anything.
[21:22]<vz2ufzzzsz>"if i can stops fiddlin, i just pop some ritalin"
[21:22]<gndyvx>I think i could make a killing with everyone moving to SP's with MPLS
[21:22]<sxrmns>tabularasa Hahahahaha
[21:22]<vz2ufzzzsz>:)
[21:23]<djzwzvnz>tmbg: exactly ! and if im doing something and something else happens my attention is like all over the place
[21:23]<gndyvx>tabularasa: Not my focisin
[21:23]<fjfkyffr>anybody use Nagios to check interface status? i got it to report back but i get the following: OK: Interface FastEthernet0/25 (index 10025) is up. (This is fine) WARNING: Interface FastEthernet0/44 (index 10044) is administratively down. (Interface shut down by me), CRITICAL: Interface FastEthernet0/9 (index 10009) is down. (This is the issue. i can't get it to distinguish if the computer is not connected or if the port is disabled.
[21:23]<gndyvx>PopKilla: aparently it knows
[21:23]<vz2ufzzzsz>nemith: heh
[21:23]<[mzvzyw_]>I think that's the longest single message I've ever seen in here.
[21:23]<gndyvx>Admin down is equal to Shut
[21:23]<vd2r>DogWater: I don't even finish video games. that's the one thing ADD people are supposed to be able to complete.
[21:23]<djzwzvnz>FBH^^ thats depression, not add
[21:23]<gndyvx>FBH^^: and thats why I win and you loose
[21:24]<djzwzvnz>if you dont feel like doing anything
