[22:19]<gndyvx>it was my purpose in life
[22:19]<[mzvzyw]>holy crap, how did I miss that in the (config)# ? menu
[22:19]<gndyvx>to pass on the default command
[22:19]<gndyvx>default Set a command to its defaults :)
[22:20]<gndyvx>the trick is the interfaces
[22:20]<[mzvzyw]>yeah, I know, I was just looking at it
[22:20]<[mzvzyw]>downward-compatible-config Generate a configuration compatible with older software
[22:20]<gndyvx>don't use it for evil... only good
[22:20]<[mzvzyw]>gee, never would have guessed by that command name there..
[22:20]<fjfkyffr>matrix what's that site that you can post text and show other people
[22:21]<[mzvzyw]>www.pastebin.com
[22:21]<gndyvx>pastbine.cpom
[22:21]<gndyvx>com
[22:21]<fjfkyffr>ah ok
[22:21]<[mzvzyw]>wow, how the hell did your E get all the way at the end? o.O
[22:21]<jeeej>fingers feeling fat today eh?
[22:21]<[mzvzyw]>it skipped like 3 letters
[22:22]<vz2ufzzzsz>if you fingers are too fat and require a special dialing wand, please mash the keypad
[22:23]<fjfkyffr>What am i doing wrong here, i've been copying and pasting configs for other ports and they are fine, fa0/4 is giving me issues.... http://pastebin.com/768041
[22:23]<[mzvzyw]>qrfhgqqrdegq
[22:23]<[mzvzyw]>apparently you can't add the same mac address to more than one port
[22:24]<fjfkyffr>but hwo come when i do a sh run , it doesn't show up
[22:24]<fjzvxnz>on any interface?
[22:25]<fjzvxnz>i know what it is.
[22:25]<fjfkyffr>on that interface, i should see the 'switchport port-security mac-address ----.----.---- '
[22:25]<fjzvxnz>cisco hates dell.
[22:25]<fjzvxnz>(not really)
[22:25]<fjzvxnz>but yeah, check the rest of your interfaces for that same mac address
[22:26]<[mzvzyw]>it said duplicate mac exists under your entry command
[22:26]<fjzvxnz>make sure you didn't put it in twice in your config
[22:26]<fjfkyffr>oh ok, how can i check that
[22:26]<[mzvzyw]>Switch(config-if)#switchport port-security mac-address 0006.5bcf.d5e4
[22:26]<[mzvzyw]>Found duplicate mac-address 0006.5bcf.d5e4.
[22:26]<fjfkyffr>i tried clearing the config on that interface
[22:26]<fjfkyffr>and rentering it in....but it must be somewhere else.
[22:26]<[mzvzyw]>yeah
[22:26]<fjfkyffr>what can i type to find it....
[22:27]<vz2ufzzzsz>sh ip arp
[22:28]<[mzvzyw]>did you add it to another port?
[22:28]<fjfkyffr>not that i know of.
[22:28]<vz2ufzzzsz>ok, i wont come into a conversation halfway in again. :)
[22:29]<[mzvzyw]>Maybe cisco hates you or something, I dunno. :/
[22:29]<fjfkyffr>lol
[22:29]<fjfkyffr>i typed in sh ip arp,i get 4 results, none of them i see this mac-address
[22:30]<vz2ufzzzsz>sh ru should show you all the port settings
[22:31]<svuzzvwsu>I've got a Cisco 2960G switch which, I thought, was 10/100/1000 for all ports. I have devices connected to the switch that I'm sure have gigabit nics in them and im using cat5e cable. Thing is, when I do a "sh int status" those devices which should be 1000 are only 100. Forcing the port to go 1000, too, just drops the connection. Any idea what could be up?
[22:31]<vz2ufzzzsz>what are the interfaces on the switch called?
[22:31]<[mzvzyw]>the NIC in the device might be hard coded for 100
[22:32]<-- dvxn|syzzzyus xzs>http://www.bagdadsoftware.de")
[22:32]<svuzzvwsu>GigabitEthernet 0/1 - 0/24.
[22:32]<vz2ufzzzsz>when you "force to 1000" is that on the nic or switch?
[22:32]<svuzzvwsu>tabularasa: Switch.
[22:32]<djzwzvnz>gotta force both ends
[22:32]<fjfkyffr>damn nation, alright i did sh ru, (only configured 3 ports) and i'm on the 4th, i dont see that mac-address anywhere. this switch is on crack.
[22:32]<fjfkyffr>lol
[22:33]<djzwzvnz>i dont do port security
[22:33]<djzwzvnz>i have 1100 interfaces
[22:33]<djzwzvnz>never needed it
[22:33]<djzwzvnz>(yet)
[22:33]<svuzzvwsu>So forcing both ends should solve the problem? Why wont it auto negotiate?
[22:33]<djzwzvnz>because if you set the speed you disabled autoneg
[22:33]<djzwzvnz>...
[22:34]<[mzvzyw]>auto negotiation @ gigabit speed is like rolling dice.
[22:34]<fjfkyffr>only GOD rolls dice lol
[22:34]<svuzzvwsu>MatBoy: thats what i was looking for - thanks. Why is it like rolling dice?
[22:34]<svuzzvwsu>err matrix
[22:34]<djzwzvnz>because thats what the ladies like
[22:34]<[mzvzyw]>compatibility between vendors is kinda bleh
[22:34]<fjzvxnz>heh, gigabit doesn't work without autonegotiation, i thought
[22:34]<djzwzvnz>they like a little adventure
[22:35]<djzwzvnz>loather: nah
[22:35]<[mzvzyw]>loather: on GBICs, you only have 1000
[22:36]<[mzvzyw]>StuartWSU: Auto negotiation works a good chunk of the time, but when it doesn't you just have to hard code both sides.
[22:36]<fjzvxnz>on gbics, sure... but i thought part of the 1000BT standard was that autonegotiation was necessary
[22:36]<[mzvzyw]>Auto-MDIX is part of 1000BaseT
[22:36]<[mzvzyw]>if that's what you're talking about
[22:37]<[mzvzyw]>and all 10/100/1000 devices support auto-neg, it just doesn't always work right. :-p
[22:38]<[mzvzyw]>which is why we have the "speed 1000" command.
[22:38]<svuzzvwsu>ok i ran a "speed 1000" and "duplex full" on the interface and have changed the user's machine to 1000 as well - they are rebooting.
[22:38]<[mzvzyw]>cool
[22:38]<fjzvxnz>maybe that's what i'm thinking of, auto mdix
[22:39]<vz2ufzzzsz>reboot?
[22:39]<vz2ufzzzsz>heh
[22:39]<[mzvzyw]>I don't think duplex does anything when the speed is 1000. There is no 1000 half as far as I know, other than Gigastack's.
[22:39]<gndyvx>yeah
[22:39]<gndyvx>there is no auto half
[22:39]<fjzvxnz>gigastack is stupid half like that
[22:39]<gndyvx>er 1000 half
[22:39]<gndyvx>with 1000BASET
[22:39]<gndyvx>fiber has always been full duplex
[22:39]<[mzvzyw]>gigastack must be serial or something
[22:40]<fjzvxnz>[Matrix]: so is ethernet when it comes down to it.
[22:40]<fjzvxnz>serial = one bit at a time
[22:41]<[mzvzyw]>1000BaseT = 4 bits @ 1 time
[22:41]<[mzvzyw]>250Mbit/pair of wire
[22:41]<gndyvx>WOO
[22:41]<[mzvzyw]>woo?
[22:41]<gndyvx>i got my networkers comped
[22:41]<gndyvx>cisco is paying for me to go
[22:41]<[mzvzyw]>nice
