[13:57]<afd>Kog: it won't be usable until compiz completes...
[13:57]<kjr>no wait, xgl is in the tut
[13:57]<kjr>AqD: I'm waiting for something truly interesting to come out of Novell
[13:57]<kjr>or, failing that... anyone else willing to take the banner
[13:58]<lcs>Kog: my room mate installed xgl on his pc
[13:58]<afd>Kog: hmmm i just want the original compositing to be more reliable..
[13:58]<lcs>Kog: it was working fine, all windows were jelish, and so on
[13:58]<afd>i have memory leak with nvidia driver..
[13:58]<afd>x use up to 150MB+ RAM then crashes several days after
[13:58]<lcs>Kog: but i worked till he changed from xfce to kde, kde seems to be to heavy/hackish for it and it breaks
[13:59]<dyguw>A word that combines "connect, share, management, business, market"
[13:59]<lcs>microsoft
[13:59]<dyguw>bah
[13:59]<afd>csmbm??
[14:00]<afd>pks: kde would be faster if it works
[14:00]<afd>pks: gtk2 takes too much time to redraw
[14:00]<lcs>AqD: it probably will, but not a this stage
[14:01]<lcs>anyway, transparency wont work too good with kde, becasue kde uses its own transpareny engine, with sux hrd
[14:02]<afd>you mean kompmgr?
[14:03]<kjr>AqD: XGL has the potential to put muscle and speed back into X... it'd be a pitty if it just ended up being a one trick pony
[14:03]<afd>Kog: it wont be faster than the compositng we have now
[14:04]<afd>oh f* i hate oracle
[14:04]<pxyfkc_>Kog, Query?
[14:04]<zyccus>AqD: which compositing is that?
[14:04]<afd>it just stalled at 45%, db creating :(
[14:05]<afd>rikkus: x's compositing
[14:05]<kjr>PhilKC_: yes
[14:05]<afd>it's usable and very fast
[14:05]<zyccus>AqD: X doesn't composite... is there some extension?
[14:05]<afd>rikkus: yes
[14:05]<zyccus>is it that 'Render' extension from years ago?
[14:06]<afd>compositor use the ext
[14:06]<afd>but the new "Compositing" extension let compositor to handle window drawing
[14:06]<zyccus>I remember some extension like that... it was never accellerated on any gfx card I had
[14:06]<afd>so everything are drawn by the client itself
[14:06]<afd>nvidia has accel
[14:06]<zyccus>ah, like OS X
[14:07]<afd>http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=129947294&size=o
[14:07]<zyccus>right... I never bought nvidia because apparently their 2D wasn't very good... that was a long time ago, though
[14:07]<afd>it's faster than plain desktop in some ways
[14:07]<afd>and very responsive even under heavy load
[14:07]<afd>rikkus: but they have good driver :)
[14:07]<afd>the only problem is memory leak
[14:07]<kjr>are you using nv or nvidia
[14:07]<afd>nvidia
[14:08]<kjr>checked out nv?
[14:08]<zyccus>is nv the open source one?
[14:08]<afd>kog you know it takes 1 min in nv to move such window (in the screenshot) from left to right? :D
[14:08]<kjr>I never got my Nvidia to work, but that migh be because I was running a TV Tuner
[14:08]<kjr>AqD: see above
[14:08]<afd>tv tuner??
[14:09]<lcs>Kog: are you talking 2d nvidia or 3d glx nvidia?
[14:09]<srlj>morning :)
[14:09]<afd>pks: nvidia is better than nv in both parts
[14:09]<kjr>pks: huh? I'm talking about going to bed
[14:10]<kjr>that's what I'M talking about
[14:10]<lcs>hehehe ;)
[14:10]<afd>:)
[14:10]<afd>hi sapo!!
[14:10]<lcs>*nn*
[14:10]<kjr>AqD: TV tuner... you watch TV on it via your computer
[14:10]<lcs>AqD: yes, i know, but he said that he was having problem with nvidia and tv tuner
[14:10]<afd>Kog: oh i hate tv
[14:10]<kjr>radio killed the video star?
[14:10]<afd>pks: well nvidia is always problemic...
[14:11]<afd>but nv is unusable :)
[14:11]<lcs>its not so problematic as ati
[14:11]<afd>yes that's why i bought a nvidia card
[14:11]<zyccus>ati = problematic... took me about 2 days to get my ati card working, and then the mouse didn't
[14:11]<afd>despite ati's is much cheaper and faster
[14:12]<lcs>if you are using windows only, then ati might be good for you
[14:12]<afd>hmmm
[14:12]<afd>pks: with a desktop like that, no ;)
[14:12]<lcs>i would not install linux on computer with ati ;p
[14:12]<zyccus>the thing that annoys me about my ATI card in Windows is that Windows keeps forgetting my gamma setting
[14:12]<kjr>neh, the ATI drivers work just fine
[14:13]<lcs>Kog: with the same speed as in windows?
[14:13]<kjr>seems to
[14:13]<lcs>sure?
[14:13]<kjr>I haven't had any problems
[14:13]<zyccus>if they work, they work
[14:13]<lcs>i remember my room mate and my boss fighting with ati radeon 9600
[14:13]<kjr>rikkus: not necessarily
[14:13]<zyccus>IME, then
[14:13]<kjr>pks: I've got a 9600
[14:14]<afd>9600 is faster than my fx5100?
[14:14]<kjr>no problems as far as I can see
[14:14]<lcs>they managed to run it under linux with opengl and stuff, but they couldn get it over 1/4 of the speed in windows
[14:14]<kjr>pks: I don't really do graphically intensive things in linux
[14:14]<kjr>I suppose I could watch a movie, and I run Gimp on it
[14:14]<zyccus>because you can't ;)
[14:14]<lcs>rikkus: you can play unreal 2004 :P
[14:15]<afd>Kog: and run Google Earth!
[14:15]<kjr>why would I boot into another operating system to do what I can already do...?
[14:15]<afd>hmmm
[14:15]<zyccus>my CPU can't really cope with HD video... so I need the GPU to do it... but getting that to work with Linux?
[14:15]<lcs>Kog: depends what do you mean by 'another operating system'
[14:15]<kjr>pks: no it doesn't
[14:15]<kjr>pks: why would I reboot to play UT2k4 when I can do that just fine from the currently running OS
[14:16]<kjr>that's illogical
