[16:55]<wmrmmgnss>well
[16:55]<wmrmmgnss>regardless if he feels I should or should not have access.. i need it in order to finish this job
[16:55]<wmrmmgnss>and he claims I should have it
[16:56]<wmrmmgnss>and said I have to use sp_help in order to view everything
[16:56]<mjzymygo>Then you need to tell the fuckwit that you don't and he is a dumb fuck ;)
[16:56]<wmrmmgnss>it isn't so much the dba that has the perimiisions like this
[16:56]<wmrmmgnss>its the program that uses the tables that have to have it set as this
[16:56]<mjzymygo>SpikeLite msdn2 sp_help
[16:56]<slycnlyvn>Moridin8, sp_help (Transact-SQL): http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187335.aspx
[16:57]<wmrmmgnss>ie I work for an alarm monitoring station (like ADT) and the tables are our main data tables for the monitoring system
[16:57]<wmrmmgnss>that runs on AIX
[16:57]<wmrmmgnss>heh
[16:57]<wmrmmgnss>and the damn admin is on vacation in cuba of all places
[16:57]<wmrmmgnss>with zero outside connection
[16:57]<wmrmmgnss>lol
[16:57]<mjzymygo>thats all I can help with in this situ. sorry
[16:58]<wmrmmgnss>thanks
[16:58]<wmrmmgnss>/me goes back to the book
[16:58]<wmrmmgnss>:x
[17:00]<wmrmmgnss>sp_helptext
[17:01]<wmrmmgnss>there we go
[17:01]<wmrmmgnss>;)
[17:02]<mjzymygo>see. not hard is it
[17:02]<mjzymygo>so obviosuly you do have permissions to view.
[17:02]<wmrmmgnss>yes I do
[17:02]<wmrmmgnss>its just weird
[17:02]<mjzymygo>looks like the DBA is keeping you out of somewhere else ;)
[17:02]<wmrmmgnss>cause I do not have explorer views on this sysobject from the explorer
[17:02]<wmrmmgnss>just from the code an sp_helps
[17:02]<wmrmmgnss>well yes he is
[17:03]<wmrmmgnss>the main tables cannot be fucked with
[17:03]<wmrmmgnss>or we are screwed
[17:03]<wmrmmgnss>but my tables are in the same db
[17:03]<wmrmmgnss>so I have to jump thru hoops in order to deal with mine
[17:03]<rwyfcygs>If you don't need to know the source of the SPs, just the params, you could try sp_procedure_params_rowset
[17:04]<wmrmmgnss>well sp_helptext is what I was looking for
[17:04]<wmrmmgnss>just so I can see what this sp is doing
[17:04]<wmrmmgnss>I am picking upwhere another dev left off
[17:04]<wmrmmgnss>so I am having to reverse engineer this app
[17:04]<wmrmmgnss>and like 10 others
[17:04]<wmrmmgnss>and I have yet to see one comment
[17:05]<rwyfcygs>If it's anything like some of the truly evil shit I used to do with triggers, you may find yourself using that gun.
[17:06]<wmrmmgnss>it sucks
[17:06]<wmrmmgnss>and I have toi have this app done by the firsat
[17:06]<wmrmmgnss>lol
[17:06]<wmrmmgnss>erm
[17:06]<wmrmmgnss>done by the first
[17:07]<mjzymygo>awilkins: wtf? why>
[17:07]<rwyfcygs>It was mostly because the data we were receiving was badly normalised and piss-poor in terms of integrity
[17:07]<mjzymygo>but... triggers?
[17:08]<rwyfcygs>So every insert had a trigger on it that checked whether it was duplicate data or non-existent data, updates to a row that never got imported, etc.
[17:08]<rwyfcygs>I didn't say I was *proud* of it.
[17:08]<rwyfcygs>Was a data import for a pharamaceutical price catalog
[17:09]<mjzymygo>but... triggers?
[17:09]<rwyfcygs>I'm chastened.
[17:09]<mjzymygo>*LOL*
[17:09]<mjzymygo>hang your head in everlasting shame
[17:09]<rwyfcygs>It sucked
[17:09]<rwyfcygs>The VB6 application that did the importing sucked too
[17:09]<rwyfcygs>But less.
[17:09]<wmrmmgnss>hrmm
[17:09]<rwyfcygs>But in my defense, it was truly shitty data in terms of quality
[17:10]<wmrmmgnss>this problem has to be with a trigger somwehere
[17:10]<rwyfcygs>I mean, I had to just ignore one of the tables because they didn't actually export any candidate keys in it
[17:11]<rwyfcygs>I actually asked their rep when he came to visit, why they even bothered exporting that table because it was impossible to glean any useful information from it.
[17:11]<rwyfcygs>He wasn't technical
[17:11]<mjzymygo>heh
[17:12]<rwyfcygs>All the fieldnames were like four chars in capitals
[17:12]<mjzymygo>the thing that scares me is that their are people like that everywhere getting paid more than us.
[17:12]<mjzymygo>I just do not getit
[17:12]<currpurjrv>Moridin8: tell me about it
[17:12]<currpurjrv>it's sad
[17:12]<rwyfcygs>It's because our work is ephemeral and mysterious to those people that pay the wages
[17:13]<mjzymygo>hi kungfugoat
[17:13]<mjzymygo>totally
[17:13]<rwyfcygs>Whereas they can comprehend "sales"
[17:13]<rwyfcygs>Never mind that without development there would be nothing to sell.
[17:13]<rwyfcygs>(well, except broken dreams, which command a good price in any economy)
[17:14]<currpurjrv>:)
[17:14]<currpurjrv>it's a crazy industry to work in
[17:14]<rwyfcygs>I had a look at that Cambrian House thing
[17:14]<rwyfcygs>THe thing they're linking from dailywtf
[17:15]<currpurjrv>I went to interview for a C# programmer job and most of the questions weren't about C#
[17:15]<rwyfcygs>I pitched in an idea I had for a reverse-charged SMS based service
[17:15]<rwyfcygs>What were the questions about?
[17:16]<currpurjrv>awilkins: database, support, etc
[17:16]<wmrmmgnss>thats actually what this prog is, it sends an sms mesage when your alarm goes off
[17:16]<rwyfcygs>xmaddness: What kind of message frequency?
[17:16]<mjzymygo>kungfugoat: which employer?
[17:16]<currpurjrv>Moridin8: it was a consulting firm
[17:16]<mjzymygo>=)
[17:16]<mjzymygo>wierd
[17:17]<rwyfcygs>LogicaCMG are advertising madly for developers at present.
[17:17]<mjzymygo>I had a technical assessment on the phone from a companies head developer, who apparently is earning about twice what I would if I worked there and is the best in the company at .NET and C#...
[17:17]<currpurjrv>Moridin8: they basically farm you out to whoever needs people
[17:18]<mjzymygo>and guess what happened?
[17:18]<rwyfcygs>He asked you a dumb question?
[17:18]<mjzymygo>well... yes and no
[17:19]<mjzymygo>it was more along the lines of a total lack of basic knowledge in .NET, OOP and computers in general.
[17:19]<mjzymygo>it was really scary.
