[11:57]<zyccus>which seems to work fine
[11:58]<rwyfcygs>Yeah, it's not too hard to upgrade VB apps ; it's getting dependancies in that's hard. .NET makes that much easier
[11:58]<rwyfcygs>Finding all the silly little hinky bits-o-shit that make a VB app work (esp. ones with the older JetDB support) is a nightmare sometimes
[11:58]<cjmgrug>wow.. with Virtual PC 2k4, it would be possible to make an 'everyday-personal-use' PC and a 'only-developer-stuff' PC on the same box.. :D
[11:58]<zyccus>well the app itself is easy, yes... the upgrade app has to do quite a bit more, though - locking down the database, running scripts and new data into it, etc.
[11:59]<zyccus>CodeRun: yes... I started running this machine by putting everything into a VM, then got annoyed by the slight sluggishness
[11:59]<cjmgrug>you mean to say, its a bad idea?
[11:59]<zyccus>no, you just have to be ok with a little sluggishness
[12:00]<rwyfcygs>I installed Damn Small Linux in it
[12:00]<rwyfcygs>I was going to install Win98 too, but I couldn't find my media
[12:00]<cjmgrug>i'm on a 2.8 Ghz HT800 .. do you think i'll still experience 'slight' sluggishness?
[12:01]<cjmgrug>i see
[12:02]<cjmgrug>since, VS2k5 is slow at times, especially with all those mouse-over-activated helper windows...
[12:03]<rwyfcygs>I find the thing that really slows VS is the context-sensitive help
[12:03]<rwyfcygs>Which I never use ; ergo, I turn it off.
[12:04]<zyccus>CodeRun: I'm on a Pentium D 940... which is 3.2Ghz I think... so yes
[12:05]<zyccus>yes, that's the first thing I turn off too
[12:05]<cjmgrug>hmm
[12:06]<zyccus>it's only slight - but it just annoyed me
[12:06]<zyccus>the main thing that seemed a bit slow was I/O
[12:06]<zyccus>CPU seems ok
[12:07]<cjmgrug>i see
[12:07]<cjmgrug>so i'll have to format the HD and install it or does it go over my existing OS ?
[12:08]<zyccus>eh?
[12:08]<cjmgrug>sorry, never fiddled with VM stuff before :(
[12:08]<zyccus>VPC asks you which directory to store your guest OS's 'hard drive' in...
[12:08]<cjmgrug>oh cool
[12:08]<zyccus>then uses files in there as a fake drive
[12:09]<cjmgrug>ok
[12:09]<zyccus>which is part of the reason it's slightly slower than the host OS for disk I/O
[12:09]<cjmgrug>i have my original version of win98. I imagine it would run real fast on this box :p
[12:09]<cjmgrug>i see
[12:09]<zyccus>oh yes
[12:10]<zyccus>I ran 3.1 on an Athlon XP 1800+... worked quite snappily ;)
[12:10]<cjmgrug>great!
[12:10]<zyccus>3.11, rather
[12:10]<zyccus>NT4 seems blindingly fast in a VM
[12:13]<cjmgrug>and how is the OS switching done?
[12:13]<mracn>i-nZ: Is ngen2 something new from MS?
[12:14]<zyccus>CodeRun: your guest OS runs in a window
[12:14]<y-gz>i guess it's just ngen for .net 2.0
[12:14]<cjmgrug>oh nice!
[12:14]<mracn>ah I see, but that doesn't actually link anything, does it?
[12:14]<zyccus>CodeRun: you can make it full screen, then get out of full screen by pressing alt gr
[12:14]<cjmgrug>ok
[12:14]<mracn>I always figured it simply precompiled it so you don't rely on JIT-compilation
[12:15]<zyccus>AFAIK, that's true
[12:15]<y-gz>yeap that's what it does
[12:15]<zyccus>CodeRun: doubt it
[12:17]<cjmgrug>hmm nothing below 2000
[12:17]<cjmgrug>i mean, win2k
[12:18]<mjzymygo>uh... did I scare rikkus off?
[12:18]<cjmgrug>no, i did.
[12:19]<cjmgrug>what up Moridin8? :)
[12:19]<mjzymygo>work?
[12:20]<cjmgrug>nice.
[12:20]<mjzymygo>and wtf worthy clients
[12:20]<mjzymygo>whats up CodeRun? :)
[12:20]<nnzjpfrr>I just got my dynaudio set. =)
[12:20]<mjzymygo>whooptidoo
[12:21]<cjmgrug>nothing just thinking of downloading MS Virtual PC 2k4
[12:22]<cjmgrug>after rikkus just told me about how helpful it can be..
[12:27]<mjzymygo>rikkus: wb
[12:27]<zyccus>thanks
[12:27]<zyccus>and good morning
[12:28]<mjzymygo>I thought I scared you off there for a second ;)
[12:29]<zyccus>you did, had to go lie down
[12:36]<mjzymygo>IE/IIS crash total for the day == 2
[12:37]<mjzymygo>rikkus: running a fubar'd ASP.NET project...
[12:38]<mjzymygo>nite kog
[12:38]<kjr>seeya
[12:39]<zyccus>night kog... and....
[12:39]<slzygc_>is there any way to change the hotkeys in the VC# express IDE?
[12:39]<zyccus>could you please add the link to the now-free-to-download MSDN library to the topic?
[12:39]<kjr>give me the link
[12:39]<slzygc_>the F11 key on my keyboard is broke.. which happens to be the hotkey for the debuggers "Step in" method
[12:39]<mjzymygo>yeh... I want that

[12:40]<mjzymygo>thanx
[12:40]<kjr>jesus, that's half a topic length right there
[12:40]<zyccus>good for all those express users
[12:40]<zyccus>yes they have a small URL problem at Microsoft. They never did 'get' the web...
[12:40]<kjr>TOPICLEN=450

[12:42]<kjr>ARSDFASDF
[12:42]<kjr>why does it hate me :(
[12:43]<mjzymygo>turn the MSDN docs into a tinyurl too
[12:43]<zyccus>s/It might take.*TOR instructions |//
[12:43]<kjr>once more with feeling
[12:43]<rwyfcygs>Just cut the bit about TOR
[12:43]<rwyfcygs>Anyone using TOR has no doubt by now determined that TOR doesn't work
[12:43]<kjr>I'll remove the TOR instructionsn later
[12:43]<kjr>don't want to flood anyone's buffer with /topic
[12:43]<zyccus>you turned more than 4 lines into more than 3... and it worked?
