[21:58]<rxrcr>redear, it's a scratch disk on internal network. I'd have to post it first
[21:58]<vyzusdjvnev>C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\asp.netwebadminfiles\9d4caaa4\c2ae7372
[21:58]<vyzusdjvnev>thats where it is on mine
[21:59]<rxrcr>redear, nothing more fun than browsing people's user dirs on a weekend. Sometimes you run into pure genius
[21:59]<znmnzz>are you infiltrating into other people's computers?
[21:59]<vyzusdjvnev>redear, who?
[21:59]<rxrcr>redear, no dude, it's a scratch disk
[22:00]<rxrcr>redear, a share that everyone has user dirs on, and everyone has permissions to
[22:00]<drygq>redear: thank you - the default case is alright =)
[22:00]<znmnzz>chaka: ah
[22:01]<znmnzz>hey is it silly to worry about deployment difficulties if you are writing a small game using .net?
[22:02]<znmnzz>most home owners in current (xp) to older OSes are all running under administrator account anyway right?
[22:02]<znmnzz>so it's a matter of bandwidth
[22:02]<znmnzz>of the redistributable environment
[22:02]<znmnzz>download
[22:02]<znmnzz>it's just for those fine folks who don't run as admin that we have to worry about right?
[22:03]<xylxjzys>I wouldn't worry about it
[22:03]<znmnzz>and even then, sometimes the admin has already installed .net framwork
[22:03]<xylxjzys>or rather, I am not worrying about it
[22:03]<xylxjzys>I am making a homebrew game too :]
[22:03]<znmnzz>Xiphoris: oh is that the market you are in, software for the masses?
[22:03]<rxrcr>redear, there aren't many home users that don't have admin privs
[22:03]<znmnzz>i see that there's no objection at all to using .net RE bundling or detection when it comes to software for developers
[22:03]<xylxjzys>no... I work professionally in the compiler industry right now
[22:03]<xylxjzys>I'm just making a game for fun
[22:04]<znmnzz>wow
[22:04]<xylxjzys>and because I think I have a new genre that hasn't been explored
[22:04]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, oh awesome
[22:04]<zgzzcygnv>heh
[22:04]<xylxjzys>basically I'm making a faster paced version of http://www.dota-allstars.com
[22:04]<zgzzcygnv>ooooooooooh
[22:04]<rxrcr>oh dude
[22:04]<xylxjzys>it's a mix of RTS, shooters, and ... DOTA :)
[22:04]<rxrcr>3d?
[22:04]<xylxjzys>nope
[22:04]<zgzzcygnv>what engine?
[22:05]<xylxjzys>well I mean, the graphics are 3D
[22:05]<xylxjzys>but the game world is 2D
[22:05]<rxrcr>sweet
[22:05]<xylxjzys>hmm, I haven't been using an engine... I'm just doing the DirectX myself
[22:05]<xylxjzys>it's pretty easy with the managed wrappers ;P
[22:05]<rxrcr>I've experimented with exporting the wc3 models and such into ogre3d meshes
[22:05]<znmnzz>i skim through a directx for .net games book a while back, seems approachable
[22:05]<xylxjzys>the idea is basically ...
[22:05]<xylxjzys>take the gameplay of DOTA
[22:06]<xylxjzys>people have heroes in the context of a larger RTS-style batter
[22:06]<xylxjzys>however, instead of selection-based targeting, you make the world more continuous, so people shoot at each other
[22:06]<znmnzz>Xiphoris: i am aiming lower, just small shareware
[22:06]<xylxjzys>but in the process they get levels and abilities and experience, and all the fights are in a context of a largely computer-run battle like DOTA :)
[22:06]<xylxjzys>well I was planning on giving this away for free
[22:06]<znmnzz>but wow that sounds like a biggish small project :)
[22:06]<xylxjzys>but I suppose if it's good I could try to sell it or something :P
[22:07]<zgzzcygnv>Xiphoris, you should publish it on Steam
[22:07]<zgzzcygnv>:)
[22:07]<znmnzz>s/shareware/not really sureware, could be freeware/
[22:07]<xylxjzys>redear: I'm going really cheap on the graphics... I'm trying to focus on gameplay
[22:07]<xylxjzys>and writing the gameplay pieces is honestly easy
[22:07]<znmnzz>Xiphoris: sweet
[22:07]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, you ever play danite's hell?
[22:07]<xylxjzys>it's just a bunch of "how do abilities work?"
[22:07]<xylxjzys>no, but I've heard of it
[22:07]<zgzzcygnv>that would give you a gigantic pool of players
[22:07]<xylxjzys>that's the one with randomly-assigned abilities right?
[22:07]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, yes. I usually play that or 3.7
[22:07]<xylxjzys>AnarkiNet: isn't steam just for HL2 engine-based games?
[22:08]<zgzzcygnv>no
[22:08]<zgzzcygnv>they publish lots of things
[22:08]<xylxjzys>chaka: well you're welcome to help in any way you want :) either programming or just giving me advice on game mechanics :)
[22:08]<xylxjzys>I'm trying to figure out how armor should work right now
[22:08]<xylxjzys>I really like starcraft style armor (damage received = damage dealt - armor)
[22:08]<xylxjzys>but I don't think that would work for a game like this
[22:08]<zgzzcygnv>gotta be a %
[22:08]<znmnzz>Xiphoris: steam is just a distribution channel i am afraid
[22:08]<zgzzcygnv>how about
[22:08]<xylxjzys>oh, well that's cool then :)
[22:08]<znmnzz>i just bought a game off of it that definitely was written to the Quake engine, instead of HL2
[22:08]<znmnzz>i think it was ummm Red Orchestra
[22:09]<xylxjzys>AnarkiNet: BTW I can't get permission from legal to help with the thing
[22:09]<xylxjzys>AnarkiNet: I only got permission for my game :P
[22:09]<znmnzz>and there's a few 2D sample games given away on the Steam network too, and they were just standard DirectX 2D stuff
[22:09]<xylxjzys>ah, cool
[22:09]<xylxjzys>is there a good .NET-based DX engine I could use?
[22:09]<xylxjzys>I'm doing this in C# on purpose to get to know the language better
[22:09]<znmnzz>*nods*
[22:09]<zgzzcygnv>erm
[22:09]<xylxjzys>and also, perhaps, to prove that real games can be written in managed languages ;)
[22:10]<xylxjzys>honestly, I think the performance will be fine
[22:10]<zgzzcygnv>there are quite a few directx game engines available i think
[22:10]<zgzzcygnv>yes it should be
[22:10]<znmnzz>Xiphoris: you are late to the game, MS Research is already trying ot prove managed languages are good for writing OSes
[22:10]<znmnzz>forgot the name
[22:10]<zgzzcygnv>unless you are going for graphics like Oblivion
[22:10]<zgzzcygnv>its
[22:10]<xylxjzys>Singularity, redear
[22:10]<zgzzcygnv>Singularity
[22:10]<znmnzz>yep
[22:10]<xylxjzys>I am going for graphics like uh... actually, a Steam game gave me the graphics idea
[22:10]<xylxjzys>what's the Steam game about a computer virtual world?
[22:11]<zgzzcygnv>Darwinia?
[22:11]<xylxjzys>yeah, that's it
