[22:11]<xylxjzys>I'm going for graphics like Darwinia
[22:11]<zgzzcygnv>ah cool
[22:11]<xylxjzys>unless some 3D guy comes in and says "I will make tons of awesome graphics"
[22:11]<znmnzz>ah darwinina
[22:11]<znmnzz>i should really buy that
[22:11]<znmnzz>ranks prett yhigh
[22:11]<zgzzcygnv>heh
[22:11]<xylxjzys>I think something like Darwinia or Geometry wars... I think the game can be perfectly fun without sophisticated graphics
[22:11]<znmnzz>Xiphoris: hey if you can work in a team and run a team, that would totally work, bring in more good guys
[22:11]<zgzzcygnv>i'm sort of wanting to start making a game based on Gladiator/OpenGlad
[22:11]<xylxjzys>I can spend osme time on a particle engine and stuff
[22:12]<nnzjpfrr>I will make tons of awesome graphics
[22:12]<znmnzz>hahaha
[22:12]<znmnzz>zeroflag++
[22:12]<zgzzcygnv>lol
[22:12]<xylxjzys>redear: I've managed teams before for open-source stuff
[22:12]<nnzjpfrr>I don't know what this is all about but I will. :P
[22:12]<znmnzz>oh sweet, example?
[22:12]<xylxjzys>redear: I started www.cosmosui.org ... it was going pretty well for a while :)
[22:12]<xylxjzys>not the website, but the mod
[22:12]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, I'll msg you at somepoint when I'm not swamped with work. I've definitely put alot of thought into taking dota-style play into it's own game, but was looking more at utilizing ogre than a managed environment.
[22:12]<znmnzz>sweet
[22:13]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, in a couple weeks everyone at ms will get an invitation to dogfood the WPF app I'm working on
[22:13]<znmnzz>i really admire all the young kids now days able to just swim in mashups, .net 2, and all the cool new things
[22:13]<xylxjzys>chaka: we could always use C++/CLI or something :P
[22:13]<znmnzz>i keep buying new books but i can't swim as fast
[22:13]<xylxjzys>honestly I just want the .NET libraries
[22:13]<xylxjzys>I don't care *as* much if it's managed ;-)
[22:13]<nnzjpfrr>chaka: may I join the team? I'm in for ogre, too. =)
[22:14]<xylxjzys>so, what's notable about ogre?
[22:14]<zgzzcygnv>heh i guess nobody here has played Gladiator or OpenGlad
[22:14]<znmnzz>is civ 4 worth the money?
[22:14]<znmnzz>it's still clocking at CAD$59
[22:14]<nnzjpfrr>uhm, wrong question.
[22:14]<nnzjpfrr>right one would be "what's not?".
[22:14]<znmnzz>that's a chunk of change for sure
[22:14]<zgzzcygnv>redear - if you like to pay for boredom
[22:14]<xylxjzys>the last civ game I liked was alpha centauri
[22:14]<xylxjzys>that was a ton of fun, but I haven't liked the subsequent ones
[22:15]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, well, first off it sounds like you're ahead of me, since I haven't started other than doing intial research. I like ogre because it's 90% of the hardcore 3D work is done for you.
[22:15]<znmnzz>Sid Meiers tried to fix it with Civ 4
[22:15]<znmnzz>might want to try it
[22:15]<znmnzz>aside from never meeting someone who has played it
[22:15]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, it's got a growing toolset to support it, and it's crossplatform
[22:15]<xylxjzys>chaka: I don't have a lot running right now. I have some ships bouncing around, camera movement controls, a keyboard-to-command an MVC pattern ...
[22:15]<znmnzz>the reviewers are going crazy aobut it
[22:15]<xylxjzys>it's not really a game yet :)
[22:15]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, more than me :)
[22:15]<xylxjzys>but, it's my #1 project right now
[22:15]<xylxjzys>and I really want to make it a success :D
[22:15]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, awesome
[22:16]<xylxjzys>I think a real DOTA game, made on its own, would gain a huge following
[22:16]<zgzzcygnv>ogre is managed or unmanaged?
[22:16]<zgzzcygnv>yes
[22:16]<nnzjpfrr>chaka: how about a multi threaded, C# environment with mogre, managed gangsta, custom networking and .NET scripting backend; sounds good?
[22:16]<xylxjzys>DOTA is constantly limited by what the WC3 engine can do
[22:16]<rxrcr>unmanaged
[22:16]<znmnzz>man it's really a lot of work working with others
[22:16]<zgzzcygnv>the DotA-allstars forums have like 500 thousand members
[22:16]<znmnzz>i admire you guys' dedication, and considering you guys will be telecommuting
[22:16]<nnzjpfrr>AnarkiNet: ogre is plain std c++ but has some .NET wrappers.
[22:16]<zgzzcygnv>ah
[22:16]<xylxjzys>oh, if ogre has .NET wrappers I'm using it for sure :)
[22:16]<znmnzz>what do you guys use to communicate? skype?
[22:16]<nnzjpfrr>well, I already started on the multithreading research.
[22:16]<znmnzz>what will you use
[22:16]<znmnzz>*
[22:17]<nnzjpfrr>but it got stuck because I don't have a debugger...
[22:17]<zgzzcygnv>well i'm still working on my MUSE application :P
[22:17]<zgzzcygnv>oh
[22:17]<zgzzcygnv>http://codeplex.com/
[22:17]<zgzzcygnv>on the front page there is a link to the Jad engine
[22:17]<xylxjzys>guys check this out: http://www.ogre3d.org/wiki/index.php/OgreDotNet
[22:17]<xylxjzys>that looks pretty nice
[22:17]<nnzjpfrr>Xiphoris: problem is, I'm still chasing this guy for his source for mogre 0.2; mogre is the most solid wrapper but I need the 0.2 features...
[22:17]<zgzzcygnv>Jad engine is C#/MDX3D
[22:17]<xylxjzys>zeroflag: what are you working on?
[22:17]<nnzjpfrr>Xiphoris: it's not as good as mogre and has tons of limitations...
[22:18]<nnzjpfrr>Xiphoris: game engine research.
[22:18]<xylxjzys>zeroflag: do you play DOTA? :)
[22:18]<nnzjpfrr>I want to prove that multi threaded game engines can work faster than single threaded ones.
[22:18]<nnzjpfrr>plus taking advantage of dual/quadcore cpus.
[22:19]<xylxjzys>that sounds sweet. tell me how to do it and I'll include it in my game :]
[22:19]<rxrcr>Xiphoris, yeah the .net wrappers aren't as good as they sound. A couple of projects have sprung up to provide the same API and toolset in a managed environment, most notably Axiom
[22:19]<nnzjpfrr>Xiphoris: no but I played some MMORPGs before - mostly wow though...
[22:19]<znmnzz>zeroflag: in java you can tell the JVM to peg a particular thread to a particular processor
[22:19]<znmnzz>is it the same in .net?
[22:19]<xylxjzys>hmmm.... so what do you recommend I use then? :/
[22:19]<nnzjpfrr>chaka: axiom is pretty much dead - I haven't seen any progress lately. they're still at ogre pre 1.0...
[22:19]<xylxjzys>I was hoping to use .NET both just to get more C# experience under my belt, and also because .NET provides so much in its libraries to make things easy
[22:20]<rxrcr>zeroflag, boo :(
[22:20]<zgzzcygnv>Xiphoris
[22:20]<nnzjpfrr>redear: you sure could, but why would you? .NET is pretty decent at handling it's resources (including cpus) on it's own...
[22:20]<zgzzcygnv>you'll have to use my networking framework
[22:20]<zgzzcygnv>:)
[22:20]<xylxjzys>AnarkiNet, so you think this is something you'd want to work on?
[22:20]<vyzusdjvnev>anyone familar with Atlas?
[22:20]<xylxjzys>I think we'll get a lot more users than the multiplayer notepad :)
[22:20]<nnzjpfrr>AnarkiNet: show me and I'll consider it - does it work with udp or tcp?
[22:21]<zgzzcygnv>TCP but could probably work with UDP
