[00:00]<z2zjvdzg>karsten: -plow ?
[00:01]<czzsvgg>abrotman: I think it's bogus information. Isn't there an md5sum somewhere?
[00:02]<z2zjvdzg>!xorgmd5
[00:02]<mlcr>If you hand-edit your X configuration file, "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" will no longer work, To see if this is the case 'md5sum -c /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf/md5sum' - if this files differ, then dpkg-reconfigure will not overwrite your existing xorg.conf. To fix this, "md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf > /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum" as root, then "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", losing any manual changes you've mad
[00:03]<czzsvgg>"you've mad"?
[00:03]<czzsvgg>;-)
[00:04]<czzsvgg>Interesting, that didn't update it, still manually editing, vesa
[00:07]<sdrrdq>peterS: i had added the line * hard memlock unlimited to /etc/security/limits.conf but i still get the same values as described in http://rafb.net/paste/results/K2RN8s63.html do i have to restart any sysdaemons
[00:07]<lnvnzs>smagy2: the values in limits.conf should take effect every time you log in
[00:07]<mzzrjpzu>Hey, I can't hear any sound on flash videos, what should I check?
[00:07]<mzzrjpzu>(debian sid)
[00:07]<z2zjvdzg>aumix and alsa-mixer
[00:07]<lnvnzs>smagy2: but I can't be certain of that, it's possible that you need to restart sshd or whatever
[00:07]<mzzrjpzu>abrotman: they should be all up
[00:08]<z2zjvdzg>so double check
[00:08]<zzyz>guys the stable versions of apache mysql and php are ====> php4. apache 1.3.33 and mysql 4.1?
[00:08]<mzzrjpzu>abrotman: actually only alsamixer, cause aumix is for oss afaik
[00:08]<sdrrdq>peterS: well i did run ssh hostname "ulimit -a" from another system since it would initiate a new login. hmmmn
[00:08]<z2zjvdzg>MarcoPau: i'm telling you to check it .. flash could use the OSS emulated devices
[00:09]<lnvnzs>smagy2: make sure sshd is using pam_limits, see if it appears in /etc/pam.d/ssh
[00:09]<lnvnzs>smagy2: (and 'UsePam yes' in /etc/ssh/sshd_config)
[00:09]<trffu>Running sarge, 2.6.16 kernel, took hd out and switched to a new computer, gets stuck at mounting root fs, gives initramfs console, to be honest I'm at my wits end. I tried to check the initramfs conf but it just says that it's on auto
[00:09]<mzzrjpzu>abrotman: so installing aumix and pulling up the volumes would be enough? Lemme try
[00:09]<svnw>jair: apache 1.3 or 2.0.54, mysql 4.0 or 4.1, and php 4.3
[00:10]<mzzrjpzu>abrotman: installed aumix: error opening the mixer
[00:10]<svnw>MarcoPau: modprobe snd-pcm-oss
[00:10]<zzyz>stew: thank you, and if I am using apache 1.3 all I need to have phpmyadmin is the package php4-mysql and phpmyadmin?
[00:11]<svnw>jair: yes
[00:11]<zzyz>stew: thanks ;)
[00:11]<sdrrdq>peterS: yiipppee! adding UsePam yes to sshd_config did the trick! thank you!!! could buy you beer for that !
[00:12]<mzzrjpzu>stew: ok, now it opened, pulled up all the volumes but the video is still soundless... am I supposed to reboot firefox?
[00:12]<lnvnzs>smagy2: cool - I would've mentioned that earlier but I thought usepam yes was already the debian default.
[00:12]<svnw>MarcoPau: i doubt restarting firefox would have any effect
[00:13]<sdrrdq>peterS: unfortunately the systems have a different sshd_config put in by another sys admin :( that is why it wasn't there.
[00:13]<lnvnzs>ahhhh.
[00:13]<z2zjvdzg>MarcoPau: you might need the OSS emu devices
[00:13]<svnw>abrotman: done
[00:14]<mzzrjpzu>I just modprobed that module
[00:14]<mzzrjpzu>anything missing?
[00:14]<czzsvgg>OK, back in X
[00:14]<lnvnzs>smagy2: note that the reason usepam is even an option is that the upstream maintainers (openbsd) consider it potentially less secure. (sshd with pam can't use a security feature called 'privilege separation', and openbsd guys in general don't like the pam architecture.)
[00:14]<mzzrjpzu>it's working
[00:14]<zjwd_>I have 2 kernel 2.6.17, 1 vanilla the 2.6.17 and one debian the 2.6.17-1-486. When I run make install to install kernel module, it copy the module to the 2.6.17 modules, how can I ask to be copied to the 2.6.17-1-486 ?
[00:15]<mzzrjpzu>stew: actually needed to rebooty
[00:15]<lnvnzs>smagy2: this mainly matters in case of any future vulnerabilities discovered in sshd
[00:15]<mzzrjpzu>stew: reboot firefox I mean
[00:15]<mzzrjpzu>thanks stew and abrotman
[00:15]<sdrrdq>peterS: oh okay. will look into it. i guess i need to go and rtfm
[00:16]<czzsvgg>abrotman: Nice umbrella.
[00:17]<lnvnzs>smagy2: I don't see anything wrong with 'UsePAM yes', but I thought I'd warn you why it's an option rather than a fixed feature. it might affect some people's decisions to use it.
[00:22]<ams>What does "E: [package] has no installation candidate" in apt mean?
[00:22]<czzsvgg>cds: Usually followed in the descriptions, isn't it?
[00:22]<svnw>cds: that no version of that package was found in any of your configured sources
[00:23]<czzsvgg>cds: That's a package which is known locally but doesn't appear to be in the Debian archives, IIRC.
[00:23]<ams>Ah, ok. So I should try another repo?
[00:23]<svnw>cds: what package? what version of debian are you running?
[00:24]<gud2d>does anyone here know a webmail package that allows a user to use their own or multiple smtp settings?
[00:24]<ams>msttcorefonts, testing.
[00:24]<ams>Ah, that worked.
[00:25]<ams>Grr, no it didn't.
[00:25]<ams>Anyone know where I can download the fonts?
[00:26]<lnvnzs>cds: the package is in 'contrib', the fonts themselves are I suppose in some location described by the package READMEs
[00:27]<ams>So how do I download the fonts?
[00:27]<czzsvgg>!tell cds about msttcorefonts
[00:27]<lnvnzs>cds: have you installed msttcorefonts? then read the docs that come with it
[00:27]<z2zjvdzg>karsten: shut it!
[00:27]<z2zjvdzg>stew: done?
[00:27]<ams>No, it won't install.
[00:28]<z2zjvdzg>karsten: do you like cakebutt?
[00:28]<ams>Can't I download the .ttf files?
[00:28]<lnvnzs>cds: "won't install" is not a very useful bug report
[00:28]<czzsvgg>abrotman: *Fahbulous*
[00:28]<ams>That's the best you're getting.
[00:28]<ams>It's not downloading.
[00:28]<lnvnzs>cds: I mean, why doesn't my car start?
[00:28]<ams>Where do I get the .ttf files?
[00:29]<lnvnzs>cds: didn't dpkg already /msg you an answer to that one?
[00:29]<lnvnzs>also, why won't my car start?
[00:29]<ams>No, he didn't.
[00:29]<ams>He told me where to get some .exe files.
[00:29]<lnvnzs>and told you what to do with them
[00:30]<lnvnzs>if it were legal to repackage the ttf files and distribute them directly from the debian ftp servers ... someone would have done so
[00:30]<ams>Don't you think apt-get install msttcorefonts already attempted to do that?
[00:30]<lnvnzs>I don't nkow
[00:30]<ams>23:26:32 < cds> It's not downloading.
[00:30]<lnvnzs>since you insist upon your right not to give us any information on what it did
[00:30]<ams>Resolving easynews.dl.sourceforge.net... 69.16.168.245
[00:30]<ams>Connecting to easynews.dl.sourceforge.net|69.16.168.245|:80... failed: Connection timed out.
[00:30]<ams>Giving up.
[00:31]<lnvnzs>sounds like a problem at sourceforge
[00:31]<zjwd_>if I used make-kpkg to make a kernel from source(downaloaded with aptitude), would apitude update will update it ?
[00:31]<lnvnzs>like, a web server being down or firewalled away from you
[00:31]<svnw>cds: i have no problem connecting to easynews.dl.sourceforge.net
[00:31]<ams>It could be a proxy issue.
[00:31]<lnvnzs>ah, could be that too
[00:32]<ams>Does it use the http or the ftp method?
[00:32]<lnvnzs>cds: given that it's trying port 80, I'm guessing http
[00:33]<2nzzmd>roxy_: No, not unless you put it in a repository and fiddle around, and stamp it properly with version information, why do you want to? Install it with dpkg.
[00:33]<ams>peterS: wget works.
[00:33]<lnvnzs>roxy_: if you want something aptitude can pull from:
