[08:44]<wryvyrr>ehm asm-i386/blah.h
[08:47]<drvnly2>wow that command worked changed my font in the text console ie the first command
[08:47]<drvnly2>i will try the -d command now
[08:48]<drvnly2>hey great! it put me back to my 0x31a not the original sarge default
[08:48]<drvnly2>i guess my kernel option vga=0x31a reset the default
[08:51]<sydjgzvg>you can echo stuff to the relevant pty too. if you own it you can do "echo 'foo bar' > /dev/pts/3" or "... /dev/tty2" or such
[08:54]<mg2yrg-srg>Hi, I'm trying to resize a partition with parted and it says the partition is in use. According to umount, the partition is not even mounted. Not surprising as I'm using a live CD to do the operation. How could I know what's using the partition? Is it possible to use a partition that is not mounted? Sounds a silly question but I ask anyway.
[08:54]<zczusx>Hey, folks!
[08:54]<faccau>waiting, nope, there is not
[08:55]<zczusx>I just installed Debian yesterday and am having a bit of a hard time adjusting. It could also be due to having to use my server as a desktop workstation for some time, but who knows ;) Firstly, what would be a good user-friendly desktop environment? I installed GNUstep in hopes that maybe it would be nice, but it seems very patchy at best and.. odd.
[08:56]<mz2znnzsvnz>rkrush: User friendly... KDE or GNOME.
[08:56]<sydjgzvg>xfce4 =)
[08:56]<zczusx>dabreegster: User friendly in the Mac way :P
[08:56]<sydjgzvg>gnome is more mac-ey than kde
[08:56]<mz2znnzsvnz>rkrush: I'm a crazy command line junkie, so you probably shouldn't listen to me
[08:57]<faccau>waiting, http://pastebin.ca/95653
[08:57]<sydjgzvg>xfce4 is a bit in-between
[08:57]<faccau>waiting, is the whole error
[08:57]<mnrmrrv>get a fucking Mac
[08:57]<svjgnm>inshey dudes
[08:57]<svjgnm>-ins
[08:57]<zczusx>deadcat: I have a fucking Mac, but I need to use this for a while ATM.
[08:57]<mnrmrrv>rkrush: stop complaining then
[08:58]<svjgnm>my mac runs sarte/testing for a year.5 ago
[08:58]<svjgnm>sarge*
[08:58]<sydjgzvg>i'm surrounded by them :)
[08:58]<svjgnm>hey simon
[08:58]<sydjgzvg>hey dude
[08:58]<svjgnm>I recorded an 18 minute piece today, on the guitar, all my latest works
[08:58]<svjgnm>interested
[08:58]<sydjgzvg>oh nice
[08:58]<sydjgzvg>sure
[08:58]<svjgnm>http://laptop.letme.getmyip.com:8181/~stoned/new.ogg
[08:58]<svjgnm>7mb
[08:58]<svjgnm>recording sucks
[08:59]<svjgnm>but do comment on technique and theory
[08:59]<zczusx>deadcat: I'm not complaining, I'm asking for opinions.
[08:59]<asvgvggs>How can I tell what X is using for my screen refresh rate? I see various Modelines in /var/log/xorg.0.log but nothing to indicate what the *current* configuration is.
[08:59]<zczusx>So basically nobody's using GNUstep, huh?
[08:59]<sydjgzvg>i'll do this from the beige, it can at least handle more than one intense task at a time...
[09:00]<svjgnm>im drunk on cheap vodka
[09:00]<svjgnm>ehehe, and I got high earlier too
[09:00]<svjgnm>didn't wann waste it, so I recorded 18 minutes of nonstop shred
[09:00]<svjgnm>tell me what you think
[09:02]<sydjgzvg>rkrush: nope. tried it a few times. i agree it's very strange
[09:04]<asvgvggs>Anyone know how to tell what the current vertical refresh rate is?
[09:06]<ugyw_ygpymnf>jstevens: press the menu button on your LCD / CRT or whatever.
[09:06]<ugyw_ygpymnf>and then navigate until you find the proper information.
[09:07]<sydjgzvg>i don't like the default theming either. too cartoony or immature looking/me is very visual
[09:07]<asvgvggs>unix_infidel: I can do that on my 19" ViewSonic, but I have an old 20" Sony that doesn't show the refresh rate on the OSD.
[09:09]<asvgvggs>unix_infidel: I would have thought the xorg log file would say what it's using for a refresh rate. Is there some utility?
[09:10]<sydjgzvg>xdpyinfo ?
[09:11]<asvgvggs>simonrvn: Yep, looked at xdpyinfo, but it doesn't give refresh rate information...
[09:11]<sydjgzvg>that's true
[09:11]<asvgvggs>Mmmm...
[09:12]<trffu>I tried to switch my hd from my old computer to a whole new build, and hoped for debian to work right away. However, it gets stuck on mounting root filesystem and drops me to an easybox initramfs shell. I can't mount the hd, even though it is visible in dmesg
[09:13]<sydjgzvg>busybox, FYI :)
[09:13]<trffu>simonrvn: sorry :)
[09:13]<sydjgzvg>hehe it's ok
[09:13]<wryvyrr>maybe the filesystem?
[09:14]<trffu>waiting: humm, what about it? dmesg lists 3 partitions but I cant even list them with fdisk or anything else
[09:15]<wryvyrr>Tallu: has your HD been IDE primary master before and now is like secondary master=
[09:15]<zczusx>Okay, next, is there a good monospace font for X11 I can use? fixed gets too "bold" at larger sizes.
[09:15]<trffu>I suppose I could just try and reinstall but in a way that would seem like giving up
[09:15]<trffu>waiting: its been primary the whole time I think
[09:15]<trffu>I'll go double check though
[09:18]<trffu>waiting: oh god. thanks a lot!
[09:19]<pzggmrgu>for a Via VT8251 SATA controller with Samsung SATA HDD, which boot
[09:19]<pzggmrgu>image should be used?
[09:20]<svjzdd>What's the proper way to give the install cd for sarge more modules to load before installing?
[09:20]<sydjgzvg>depends on the cpu more than the hdd...
[09:21]<sydjgzvg>Stormy: go to the install modules section and request more of them
[09:21]<svjzdd>install modules section where?
[09:21]<sydjgzvg>stoned: i'm really liking this. it's really trippy
[09:21]<svjzdd>i mean kernel modules
[09:21]<svjzdd>not software modules
[09:21]<sydjgzvg>yeh, some of them are kernel modules
[09:21]<svjzdd>like i2o_core i2o_proc i2o_block
[09:21]<svjzdd>which aren't listen
[09:21]<svjzdd>listed
[09:21]<svjzdd>and aren't on the cd
[09:22]<svjzdd>but are in the default kernel once it's installed
[09:22]<pzggmrgu>tried the latest Etch d-i iso, no go ....unable to detect the HDD
[09:22]<sydjgzvg>oh, those, no i don;t think they're there as modules if they're there at all.
[09:22]<svjzdd>i tried to use insmod from an install on another hard drive
[09:22]<sydjgzvg>that won't work
[09:22]<zsxrcyg>hey i am trying to get dvd burning to work on my machine and it's not working at all... is there a faq or something like that besides whats listed on google
[09:22]<sydjgzvg>..as you saw :)
[09:22]<svjzdd>i could get them to load, partition but initrd screamed and broke the install
[09:22]<svjzdd>so how do i add them in?
[09:23]<sydjgzvg>you were lucky
[09:23]<pzggmrgu>rshakin: are you using growisofs to burn the image?
[09:23]<svjzdd>can i make a driver disk or something?
[09:23]<pzggmrgu>rshakin: do that instead of using cdrecord.
[09:23]<sydjgzvg>yeh, check out the install guide
[09:23]<svjzdd>kk
[09:24]<zsxrcyg>well, it's a dvd-rw drive but i am just trying to make it burn cds for now...
[09:24]<sydjgzvg>freedgnu: did you use the 2.6 kernel? oh, etch, it's probably default ...
[09:24]<sydjgzvg>well if it can't burn cds it won't.
[09:25]<pzggmrgu>simonrvn: on a compiled 2.6.x kernel, everything works
