[11:32]<pnnnnjd2yn>d-i would be the simpler approach...
[11:33]<ggvdrgw>freezombie, cast: thanks for the info.
[11:34]<rrsv>netman1: what does one mean by ssh portal anyway?
[11:35]<ggvdrgw>cast: a server whose only purpose is to authenticate people for the network with (if possible) ssh installed as the only application.
[11:35]<rrsv>ahh.
[11:36]<svjppnff>morning
[11:36]<ggvdrgw>stoffel: morning
[11:37]<svjppnff>i'm having an issue with 1 debian server randomly locking up, the machine is remote so I can't verify it's a kernel panic, but nothing can be found in the logs.. any tips on troubleshooting this?
[11:38]<ggvdrgw>stoffel: no possibility of a remote console or syslog server?
[11:38]<svjppnff>netman1: I'm working on making remote console possible. maybe syslog is the way to go? (there's a 2nd server on the same lan there)
[11:39]<_txodas>where woudl mod_userdir
[11:39]<_txodas>be located
[11:39]<_txodas>for apache
[11:39]<svjppnff>_ThOmAs: on my system it says: /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_userdir.so
[11:40]<_txodas>ta
[11:40]<ggvdrgw>stoffel: remote console would be the way to go, question is wether the malfunctioning server is able to get the syslog messeages of the presumed kernel panic out of the door (over the) before it freezes. Doubt it, but don't have experience with it.
[11:40]<ggvdrgw>s/over the/over the net/
[11:41]<svjppnff>netman1: oh, okay, i get it.. would remote serial console also be sufficient? (guess not ?)
[11:41]<_txodas>where i enable/disable modules again
[11:41]<svjppnff>netman1: hm, or maybe in the bios enabling that... okay.. gotta try something like that then..
[11:41]<ggvdrgw>stoffel: hardwired console would be best (for bios).
[11:42]<svjppnff>_ThOmAs: a2enmod or a2dismod
[11:42]<_txodas>LoadModule userdir_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_userdir.so
[11:42]<_txodas>already loaded
[11:42]<_txodas>but how i use it
[11:42]<_txodas>will enable it
[11:42]<ggvdrgw>stoffel: not to promote a manufacturer, but have good experience with "integrated lights-out".
[11:42]<svjppnff>netman1: yeah :) me too.. but in some cases I have some supermicro's remotely, brrr.. prefer iLO also :)
[11:45]<_txodas>??
[11:46]<ggvdrgw>_ThOmAs: look in /etc/apache2 's subdirs.
[11:47]<bp9m1pyzn>hey, what is the command to view the specs of your hdd?
[11:48]<aggvzw>you mean like how big it is and how much of it is used?
[11:48]<aggvzw>or do you mean its access and RPM speed, etcc?
[11:48]<fyr2fn>hdparm?
[11:49]<bp9m1pyzn>how big
[11:49]<svjppnff>netman1: I have munin running on that node, here's a graph of the memory usage, seems strange to me: http://www.stoffell.be/files/
[11:49]<svjppnff>netman1: oops, direct link: http://www.stoffell.be/files/memory-day.png
[11:50]<zzyz>hello guys,
[11:50]<bp9m1pyzn>hey
[11:50]<bp9m1pyzn>yeah, how big and how much used
[11:50]<zzyz>I winder if to install vmware free in debian I need specific files installed on my debian server?
[11:50]<svjppnff>Bl4d3fire: df -h
[11:53]<ggvdrgw>stoffel: looks like a memory leak to me. As a workaround you could run a script every hour to test for the used memory and restart it if it exceeds a certain threshold.
[11:54]<bp9m1pyzn>oh thanks
[11:54]<bp9m1pyzn>someone else told me another one, it displayed the size in kilobytes or something
[11:54]<svjppnff>netman1: I was thinking the same, I ran "vmstat 5" in a remote ssh session, and could see swap getting used, but I'm not sure wich process is causing this? (and why it wouldn'tget logged by OOM for example)
[11:54]<bp9m1pyzn>oh yeah, and rm -rf /*, what does -rf stand for?
[11:55]<svjppnff>Bl4d3fire: use df -h you can see the other options..
[11:55]<cvwyfyrxv>-f is force, -r is recursive
[11:55]<svjppnff>lol Bl4d3fire rf stands for 'really fucked' :p
[11:55]<cvwyfyrxv>you get it all from rm --help
[11:55]<bp9m1pyzn>lol
[11:57]<bp9m1pyzn>there are sizings higher than terabite?
[11:57]<bp9m1pyzn>wtf?
[11:57]<rpvnzdnrvx>yeah
[11:57]<rpvnzdnrvx>super-bigo-byte
[11:58]<wryvyrr>Bl4d3fire: sure, LHC @ CERN makes several PB (petabyte)
[11:58]<ggvdrgw>stoffel: dump the /proc/*/status files every minute?
[11:59]<afygvsgnv>hey cast, and pons, you guys going be here, for a while?
[11:59]<svjppnff>netman1: hmm, okay, will do that.. maybe even try to dump it remotely or so.. thanks
[11:59]<rrsv>maybe not this room, but on freenode no doubt
[12:00]<svjppnff>lol
[12:03]<cz2jjvzz>is there a rescue cd i can download?
[12:03]<wryvyrr>Bl4d3fire: good thing with them big computers is that lots of stuff can be fixed manually. here's what they do when their CPU is br0ken http://doc.cern.ch//archive/electronic/cern/others/PHO/photo-alice//its-2006-001.jpg
[12:03]<svud2fns>hi, i'd like to capture a video of my desktop (video walkthrough). Can anyone suggest a suitable program?
[12:04]<svjppnff>stumbles: you could use this: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/270
[12:05]<wryvyrr>stumbles: sure, thats what I work on ATM :)
[12:05]<bp9m1pyzn>waiting, kool
[12:05]<wryvyrr>stumbles: check vncrec or vnc2swf
[12:07]<wryvyrr>waiting: in debian, there is xvidcap, which is actually even cooler, unfortunately it often crashes
[12:07]<wryvyrr>ehm ^^^
[12:07]<svud2fns>cheers!!
[12:07]<2jjmyn>Hi: I have an etch installed; at boot time it says that ifup can't read /etc/network/interfaces; every time, in order to connect the adsl, I have to launch pppoeconf, because the expected "pon dsl-provider" does nothing. I suspect, again, it's connected with the problem that ifup can't read /etc/network/interfaces ... any hints?
[12:08]<wryvyrr>stumbles: so, like the names suggest, these programs do not really capture "your desktop" but a vnc
[12:08]<bp9m1pyzn>what is vnc?
[12:08]<wryvyrr>Bl4d3fire: a remote desktop client/server thing
[12:08]<uwn>boodie, anything special about the permissions of /etc/network/interfaces?
[12:08]<svud2fns>kabootar: you can recover from many problems using a Debian install CD. will depend on what the problem is
[12:09]<wryvyrr>Bl4d3fire: works on win32, too
[12:09]<bp9m1pyzn>ok
[12:09]<cz2jjvzz>stumbles, no use actually. netinstall and business card descriptions tell me that its not much use for anything but installing.
[12:09]<hnfduvg>Did anybody observe one of the following phenomenas? 1) The xserver monotonically increases cpu usage. Atfer one wee my (unstable) xorg uses about 70% CPU. 2) When Composite extension is enabled the xserver segfaults.
[12:09]<2jjmyn>uwe: this is the ls: "-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 582 2006-07-22 10:52 /etc/network/interfaces"
[12:10]<2jjmyn>Might it be due to the fact that ifup is not root owned?
[12:10]<uwn>well, interfaces is readable for non-root in your case...
[12:12]<fyr2fn>boodie: paste the file on a paster
[12:12]<uwn>do you have anything special about partions being mounted? do you have problem with all your interfaces or only when it comes to the dsl
[12:12]<svud2fns>kabootar: a couple of resuce disks i have used are GParted boot disk, ultimate boot disk, system rescue cd... but of course i don't know what you want to fix
[12:12]<2jjmyn>I admit that running pppoeconf every time is just a minor nuisance, but still ... it didn't happen with sarge (I suppose etch is called 'testing' for a reason)
[12:13]<bp9m1pyzn>neither
[12:13]<egmenyuve>is it possible to emulate debian on my windows platform ?
[12:13]<svud2fns>thanks waiting, stoffell these look very useful
[12:13]<2jjmyn>No, i think i have both ext3 and reiserfs, but no problem whatsoever
[12:14]<2jjmyn>debian mysteries
[12:15]<wryvyrr>can someone recommend me a torrent racker in PHP4?
[12:17]<zgzlyvyzvuz>Hi all.
[12:37]<fyr2fn>!moo
[12:37]<mlcr>mooooooo! I am cow, hear me moo, I weigh twice as much as you. I'm a cow, eating grass, methane gas comes out my ass. I'm a cow, you are too; join us all! type apt-get moo.
[12:38]<zmzzcjz>ipv6: disagrees about version of symbol security_ops.. <- dmesg; what 's this..
[12:43]<npnpvxnzyjs>haha, apt-get moo is awesome
