[00:33]<lnvnzs>!own repo
[00:33]<mlcr>Custom-Package-Repository-HOWTO: [1, as root] apt-get install dpkg-dev; [2, as user] mkdir -p ~/public_html/foo; cd ~/public_html/foo; [3] cp /your/packages.deb .; [4] dpkg-scanpackages . /dev/null | gzip > Packages.gz; [5, as root] echo >> /etc/apt/sources.list "deb http://localhost/~username/foo ./"; [OR, if no local web server set up] echo >> /etc/apt/sources.list "deb file:///home/username/public_html/foo ./";
[00:34]<lnvnzs>cds: I wonder what the msttcorefonts package is trying, then. I don't have it installed so I can't really check
[00:35]<2nzzmd>peterS: Nice factoid.
[00:35]<lnvnzs>beardy: thanks
[00:35]<ams>Ok... so... how do I install them?
[00:35]<ams>Since apt won't let me install the packages needed.
[00:36]<lnvnzs>cds: figure out how msttcorefonts is trying to download it, and fix it, I guess
[00:36]<chjmrll>Can anyone tell me why certain packages need to be removed (i.e. the whole of KDE or GNOME) to install a package like FAM?
[00:36]<ams>peterS: And how do I do that?
[00:36]<lnvnzs>cds: why are you asking me? I already told you I don't have msttcorefonts installed.
[00:37]<zjwd_>beardy: I tried to install a kernel module but got symbol error, usually the reason is kernel header problem. To check I install a kernel from source and booted into it. I could load the module without problem. But I prefer to have everything under aptitude watch so I rebooted into the binary-debian kernel, but now when I try to install the module, it copies in /lib/module/kernel-source instead of /lib/module/kernel-binary.
[00:37]<lnvnzs>sometimes I'll fix a package I don't even use as a favor to someone who does use it. today I'm not really in the mood.
[00:37]<ams>Does anyone else know how to install the microsoft fonts?
[00:38]<trffu>Ok this is weird. I can see the hd in dmesg but i cant see it in /dev/ and i cant mount it no matter what.
[00:38]<zjwd_>peterS: thanks for the link, but having my own repository seems to much hassle.
[00:38]<lnvnzs>roxy_: then use 'dpkg -i' rather than 'aptitude' to manage package updates
[00:39]<-- svgvsdyzgjvr__ xr>/dev/null")
[00:39]<eorl>how do I prevent nautilus from restarting itself?
[00:40]<lnvnzs>cds: looks like update-ms-fonts uses 'wget --continue --tries=1 --dns-timeout=10 --connect-timeout=5 --read-timeout=300 --directory-prefix . -c'
[00:40]<czzsvgg>zOap: Remove it.
[00:40]<ams>I can't see how that should break it :/
[00:42]<lnvnzs>cds: nor I. but if you have the font .exe files downloaded to some directory, try running update-ms-fonts /that/directory
[00:42]<lnvnzs>cds: by passing a /that/directory argument, it should suppress the urge to wget
[00:42]<ams>I don't.
[00:42]<zjwd_>peterS: thanks
[00:43]<lnvnzs>cds: but you said wget worked - doesn't that imply that you downloaded the .exe files? I'm confused
[00:43]<ams>No, wget works outside of apt as a test.
[00:43]<czzsvgg>zOap: what WM/DE are you running?
[00:44]<eorl>karsten, that would do it, but I use it for samba network browsing.. so It would be nice to hold on to it..
[00:44]<eorl>karsten, gnome
[00:44]<eorl>2.14
[00:44]<lnvnzs>cds: well it tries quite a few URLs, see if you can download files from any of them: http://belnet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/corefonts/ and then easynews.dl, twtelecom.dl, aleron.dl, cesnet.dl, switch.dl
[00:45]<fueed77>What mechanism does Debian have for saving iptables? I can't seem ti find any.
[00:45]<ams>Bah, I've got a friend to email them to me.
[00:45]<lnvnzs>cds: or pull down the .exe files from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/corefonts individually
[00:46]<czzsvgg>zOap: gnome is rather nautilus-happy.
[00:46]<czzsvgg>zOap: There are other/better Samba network browsers.
[00:46]<czzsvgg>zOap: Unfortunately Nautilus is extremely poorly scoped / designed.
[00:46]<ams>It's really easier to get a friend to email them.
[00:46]<djaja>Fuzzy76: most people create an init-script that re-impliments your iptables rules on boot.
[00:47]<eorl>karsten, what samba browser do you like?
[00:47]<lnvnzs>I hope he appreciates that I just downloaded the msttcorefonts package and read the source code in order to give him that information
[00:47]<lnvnzs>he seemed a bit grumpy
[00:47]<czzsvgg>zOap: Generally, I just mount stuff. I believe konqueror can do it.
[00:47]<czzsvgg>zOap: smbclient for text / console mode.
[00:48]<czzsvgg>zOap: Might want to find a gnome channel.
[00:48]<eorl>karsten, thanks. I tried linneighborhood, but sometimes it didn't work against win 2003 servers..
[00:48]<eorl>karsten, I'll do that. thanks :)
[00:51]<nufnw>wow: I'm looking for a cheapo laser printer, and I found one that specifically lists that it's compatible with debian: samsung ml-2010 :)
[00:51]<djaja>why not find the share you are looking for using findsmb and then mount the share using smbmount? Then any file-manager will see it.
[00:52]<eorl>DocOC, that's a good advice. I'll look into it. thanks:)
[00:52]<wmezzm>Eulex: Any printer that supports PostScript should be fine
[00:52]<wmezzm>Eulex: I have an HP LaserJet 1300 and it works nicely
[00:53]<wmezzm>Eulex: I've seen a Samsung printer (might have been that one, but I'm not sure; I don't remember the model number) that uses some proprietary page language, not PostScript, but provides a Linux driver
[00:54]<wmezzm>Eulex: but the driver is annoying to install, and a bit old (GTK 1.x for its UI, I think)
[00:54]<nufnw>Wyzard, well, what made an impression on me was that the technical specs explicitly specified debian as a supported os
[00:55]<wmezzm>Eulex: It's nice that they say that, but printer support isn't really a distro-specific thing
[00:55]<wmezzm>Eulex: They probably just said "this supports Linux" and listed the most popular distros
[00:55]<nufnw>Wyzard, true
[00:56]<wmezzm>Eulex: I'd strongly recommend getting a printer that supports PostScript, not some proprietary thing that happens to provide a (closed-source, not-well-maintained) driver for it
[00:56]<nufnw>Wyzard, ok. thanks for the advice :)
[00:57]<wmezzm>Eulex: IIRC, I got my LaserJet 1300 because linuxprinting.org recommended it as a good "personal" laser printer that supports PostScript
[00:57]<bfyssnw>Eulex: seconded, but also many printers have an open source GhostScript driver
[00:57]<wmezzm>Eulex: It was $300, I believe, but I don't remember whether that was before or after the $100 rebate that HP was offering at the time
[01:00]<ams>Anyone know how to change the default font to one that doesn't suck?
[01:00]<djzlxyz>i have a problem with permissions since I can play videos as root but not as _user....to what file do I set the right permissions?
[01:01]<svnw>cds: default font for what?
[01:01]<ams>stew: firefox, gimp, gaim, etc.
[01:01]<djzlxyz>(i'am using mplayer btw)
[01:01]<svnw>cds: use switch2 from gnome-theme-switch
[01:03]<ams>Thanks.
[01:03]<ams>Can anyone recommend a good one?
[01:03]<ugyw_ygpymnf>anyone have any experience with Sennheisers warranty? I'm looking to buy a Senn HD202 and i was curious if anyone had any issues with their warranty service.
[01:05]<wmezzm>unix_infidel: I don't, but I've seen two cases of a certain piece breaking off of an HD280 -- one of which is mine, so I should be looking into their warranty service too
[01:06]<ugyw_ygpymnf>Wyzard: yea, i hear the HD202 gets better reviews than the 280 oddly enough.
[01:06]<mnvrlxrnn_frlvjl>how do i compile a kernel in debian
[01:07]<ams>stew: Doesn't want to change in Firefox?
[01:07]<ggnr>!kernel-package
[01:07]<mlcr>To compile a kernel The Debian Way(tm) "apt-get install kernel-package build-essential libncurses5-dev" and follow the instructions in /usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz; You should also ask me about 'make-kpkg' and 'kp mantra'
[01:07]<mnvrlxrnn_frlvjl>do they have a tool or do i just install the source and manually compile it
[01:07]<ggnr>!make-kpkg
[01:07]<mlcr>extra, extra, read all about it, make-kpkg is the Debian Way (tm) to deal with kernel compiling - it makes a package for your Kustom Kernel (tm) which you can install/remove easily (tm) with the dpkg (pat. pend.) mechanisms. 'apt-get install kernel-package' then 'man make-kpkg' =), or see also http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-kernel.html or ask me about <kp mantra>
[01:07]<ggnr>MetaPhaze_laptop: there you have it
[01:08]<mnvrlxrnn_frlvjl>Gnea, thanks
[01:09]<svnw>cds: in firefox: edit->preferences
[01:09]<ams>stew: That's just the page.. I mean the menus.
[01:10]<svnw>cds: firefox is gtk2 so switch2 is what you want
[01:10]<ams>stew: Yeah.. it has'n changed it for some reason.
[01:11]<svnw>cds: did you restart firefox?
[01:11]<ams>Yeah.
[01:11]<ams>Bah.. it's not that big a deal I guess...
[01:11]<ams>It's worked in everything else.
[01:11]<ams>Cheers.
[01:14]<mnvrlxrnn_frlvjl>sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault.dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (broken pipe) what can i do?
[01:20]<rjgyg>make up your mind Fuzzy76
[01:20]<fueed77>sorry about that, unstable bnc connection :)
[01:20]<rjgyg>heh
[01:21]<mnvrlxrnn_frlvjl>sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg received a segmentation fault.dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (broken pipe) what can i do?
[01:25]<czsvgnz>I just learned about netstat -s - connections aborted dute to time out seems bad, am I right?
