[20:00]<xrrrud>Tallu: vlc is worth a look
[20:00]<trffu>cast: both
[20:00]<rrsv>cplay is good for mp3/vorbis
[20:00]<trffu>clintsnet, Xenguy, i'll give it a look :)
[20:00]<trffu>cast: okay
[20:00]<afygvsgnv>vlc supports a large range of formats for all kindsof videos, you can even stream, input urls, etc
[20:01]<afygvsgnv>--> http://www.videolan.org
[20:01]<afygvsgnv>videolan is actually what its called
[20:01]<auvglygc2uggygs>I'd just like to announce I succesfully 1. Installed an OS 2. Configured a gateway 3. Configured a firewall and 4. Configured a transparent proxy in 10 MINUTES thanks to linux (and this means something coming from a MS guy)
[20:01]<trffu>clintsnet: ok thanks
[20:01]<auvglygc2uggygs>so thank you guys for helping me out
[20:02]<auvglygc2uggygs>I forget who helped me find my DG on my previous install
[20:02]<auvglygc2uggygs>but thank you
[20:02]<afygvsgnv>right now I"ve just got my newest, testing/unstable debian installed, and I"m having a blast with it. my hardware detection for laptop was alot better, install was fast. and it was the net install, only have 1.5 mb down. but thats my friends network, who I stayin with temp, College will pick up though, did a custom xfs, and its blazin
[20:02]<afygvsgnv>I can't wait to get VMware Workstation 5.5 installed, and see how fast it responds, I bet it will blow my socks off compared to that of working with ubuntu
[20:03]<afygvsgnv>yeah not a problem. anytime..
[20:03]<afygvsgnv>videolan is 1 of my favorite video players ever, and streamers, when I get the faster speed.. and Fiber Optics from College, I"m going run a web server and vlc server
[20:04]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>guys... i know this is gonna start a war but... what's better for my server... gentoo or debian?
[20:04]<afygvsgnv>lol
[20:04]<afygvsgnv>no comment
[20:04]<afygvsgnv>just do a debian , xfs
[20:04]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>xfs, i dont like because if my power goes out i have data loss
[20:04]<afygvsgnv>gentoo.. eh.. I tried my days with that, its alot of configuratin
[20:04]<afygvsgnv>not truely
[20:05]<trffu>for a server, your power shouldnt go out :P get ups
[20:05]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>yea its a 233mhz proc
[20:05]<afygvsgnv>that could happen with anything
[20:05]<pjjwy>hi guys, has anyone worked with lvm with different oses? im planning on dual booting sarge and sid. is it possible to use the same lvm volumes between them?
[20:05]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>hey its running out of my house
[20:05]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>on my cable connection, for fun
[20:05]<xrrrud>darknessofevil: pretty clearly, old/stable is better for a production server, so you do the math :-)
[20:05]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>i see
[20:05]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>i may have to change it
[20:05]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>btw i own nixgeek.net
[20:05]<mzzcgnssjpnvyf>that's gonna be my server once i get it conf'ed
[20:05]<afygvsgnv>thats why if your running a server, you want ot have an interruptible power supply
[20:07]<trffu>I wouldnt run any server without a ups
[20:07]<zun_xjusn>"you want ot have an interruptible power supply"
[20:07]<afygvsgnv>I wo'nt down it. I know this guy, he claims gentoo is the best.. well maybe for advanced users. but its like trying to learn , a whole different package management system, it has FreeBSD ports.. but I sound wasn't even detected off install nor was proper video. but that is like that for alot of things. but then again ,servers don't need gui's ,
[20:07]<yvaxy>cast: it's splay
[20:07]<zun_xjusn>the 'u' starts for uninterruptable
[20:07]<afygvsgnv>but you could always run a fluxbox as well
[20:08]<zun_xjusn>but if its a windows server, you want to have it restarting as often as possable to keep it going
[20:10]<yvaxy>Inty^: What is windows?? :-p
[20:12]<zun_xjusn>windows is a software package that is advertized to managers of companies as the only safe software to run in ther organization, they pay a lot for it, and liscences, and training for their employees, and wages for their trained employees
[20:12]<yvaxy>robin_sz: Is a bit like KDE or Gnome if you want, but many many lighter :-)
[20:13]<ej2yg_se>kde is a collection of apps isnt it? kword, kmail, k<something else> ... gnome is a version of X? not really the same thing are they?
[20:13]<yvaxy>rue_house: Just try to say somethings like 'That diabolice M$ windows ...' Like windows is (NO tm) at my eyes and most of here too. window hehe
[20:14]<zun_xjusn>kde and gnome are compeditors
[20:14]<zun_xjusn>they are interface libraries
[20:14]<zun_xjusn>for things liek menus and buttons, and stuff
[20:14]<zun_xjusn>that applications are made with
[20:14]<zun_xjusn>(someone correct me if I'm wrong)
[20:15]<ej2yg_se>sounds wrong ...
[20:15]<nufnw>Inty^, false.
[20:15]<zun_xjusn>enlightenment is a window manager
[20:15]<zun_xjusn>like blackbox and ratpoison
[20:15]<yvaxy>Desktop environment is it
[20:16]<ej2yg_se>now I am confused :)
[20:16]<zun_xjusn>you ought be
[20:16]<nufnw>rue_house, false too. (that is, about kde and gnome being interface libraries)
[20:16]<ej2yg_se>do I have a window manager?
[20:16]<ej2yg_se>its the thing that allows you to open and close windwos, drag them around right?
[20:16]<zun_xjusn>robin_sz, can you move or resize windows in X?
[20:16]<yvaxy>rue_house: Why not??
[20:16]<ej2yg_se>seems so, so I guess I must have ,,,
[20:17]<yvaxy>eat time :-p
[20:17]<zun_xjusn>those are things a window manager lets you do
[20:17]<nufnw>robin_sz, no, it's the thing that gives you a window border around windows, and yes, enabled you to drag them around, resize them and some other stuff
[20:17]<ej2yg_se>the window manager provides the little X inthe corner of each app and the maximise/minimiser icons right?
[20:17]<zun_xjusn>you know when you dont have a window manager because all apps are jammed in the top left of the screen with no way to move them or anything
[20:17]<zun_xjusn>that one thing, yes
[20:17]<nufnw>robin_sz, no, the whole border around the windows (sometimes called window decorations)
[20:18]<ej2yg_se>right, .. hardly anything to get worked up about then ... they are all the same surely?
[20:18]<zun_xjusn>maybe it was called fluxbox... anyhow
[20:18]<nufnw>robin_sz, umh, which are all the same?
[20:18]<2fjgmyn>how can I find out what boot thingy I'm using (lilo etc)?
[20:19]<zun_xjusn>blondie, do you have a file called /etc/lilo.conf?
[20:19]<2fjgmyn>rue_house: no
[20:19]<trffu>Yeah, vlc looks very nice :) Now just to figure out how to get it to play from console properly :)
[20:19]<ej2yg_se>Eulex, window managers .. they are just presumably different implentations of the code to drag, minimise and maximise a window ...
[20:19]<ej2yg_se>seems like not a thing to worry about much then
[20:19]<2fjgmyn>rue_house: but I don't have a grub config file either
[20:19]<zygmjpp>I added a new group to /etc/group, but newgrp and sg don't see it. I'm using Debian Sarge.
[20:19]<zun_xjusn>blondie, do you have a directory called /boot/menu ?
[20:19]<2fjgmyn>rue_house: no
[20:20]<zun_xjusn>when it boots does it say 'grub' or 'lilo' ?
[20:20]<2fjgmyn>neither... this is on an xbox x.x
[20:20]<zun_xjusn>well, you dont have to have a bootloader
[20:20]<nufnw>robin_sz, well, those are the basic feature they can have. then they can have more features, like action keyboard shortcuts, how they do window placing, whether they provide tabs, and they might provide a composite manager.
[20:20]<zun_xjusn>if you have a pre 2.6 kernel
[20:21]<junzm>moo :)
[20:21]<svzguggz>remove lilo, if you cannot boot you used lilo..., else you use grub :-)
[20:21]<zun_xjusn>Juerd, your mooing again
[20:21]<ej2yg_se>Eulex, I dont think Id use any of those .. so perhaps its just not an important thing for me ...
[20:21]<2fjgmyn>grrr ntpdate on testing is not installable :(
[20:21]<junzm>rue_house: moo?
[20:21]<junzm>streuner: If lilo doesn't work, in 99% of all times, it's because people didn't run lilo after upgrading lilo.
[20:22]<junzm>LILO is a great program, but often used wrong. Don't FUD people into GRUB, but let people make a right choice based on real arguments.
[20:22]<ej2yg_se>Eulex, probably a bit like desktop icons and those menus that you can drop down with list of aplications and stuff .. they are just something I dont see a need for.
