[06:14]<zznz\jzd>Erica-: trash your box :-)
[06:14]<ezyrr->lol
[06:14]<fyr2fn>Erica-: you can get a install kernel and use that
[06:14]<fyr2fn>Erica-: see the install guide, hard drive media
[06:14]<ezyrr->liable: on one floppy?
[06:14]<fyr2fn>no, from your hard drive
[06:15]<ezyrr->how does that work? because my hard drive is running rh9 that I want to replace with debian
[06:16]<zun_xjusn>I need a copy of the last kdenlive deb package
[06:16]<fyr2fn>you get a kernel and initrd, add it to grub menu, and boot from it
[06:16]<zun_xjusn>I uninstalled it without expecting it to dissapear off the face of the planet
[06:16]<zun_xjusn>can anyone help me?
[06:16]<fyr2fn>is it a debian package or from another distro?
[06:17]<ezyrr->i'm lost liable
[06:17]<ezyrr->where is the install guide?
[06:17]<fyr2fn>!ig
[06:17]<mlcr>install guide is at http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual and choose the 'ARCH' for your box
[06:17]<xnsaj_>Evening folks. For the last couple of weeks, one of my servers has been throwing errors like the following every time I run apt-get install or remove. Any ideas? Errors read:
[06:17]<xnsaj_>Traceback (most recent call last):
[06:17]<xnsaj_> File "/usr/bin/apt-listchanges", line 30, in ?
[06:17]<xnsaj_> import apt_pkg
[06:17]<xnsaj_>ImportError: libapt-pkg-libc6.3-6.so.3.11: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[06:17]<fyr2fn>!tell hesco_ about paste
[06:19]<ezyrr->liable where to I get the images from?
[06:20]<zznz\jzd>Erica-: try Camera
[06:20]<zznz\jzd>Erica-: :$
[06:21]<ezyrr->camera?
[06:21]<fyr2fn>Erica-: read the guide, it tells you
[06:21]<ezyrr->Copy the following files from the Debian archives to a convenient location on your hard drive, for instance to /boot/newinstall/.
[06:21]<zznz\jzd>Erica-: yes camera you can make nice pictures with :-)
[06:21]<ezyrr->that is all it says
[06:21]<zznz\jzd>ftp.debian.org
[06:22]<drvnly2>Erica: do you wanted to know the basics about how to get started installing debian?
[06:22]<xzzmqjlq00>hey all - I need a good p2p app to run in testing. something solid, highly recommended, etc. any suggestions?
[06:23]<zznz\jzd>hardbop200: msn messenger?
[06:23]<xzzmqjlq00>Greg\ory: I've always thought of that as a chat program for Windows, I'm need file sharing.
[06:24]<xzzmqjlq00>I'm seeing a lot about some donkey something-or-other. Is that worth trying?
[06:25]<xnsaj_>sorry folks, didn't know I'd be booted for four lines.
[06:25]<zznz\jzd>hardbop200: was joke ;)
[06:25]<xnsaj_>Any ideas why apt-get no longer likes me on that server?
[06:25]<xzzmqjlq00>sorry ;)
[06:25]<drvnly2>i would like to learn more about the basics of video modes on my celeron running sarge
[06:25]<fyr2fn>Erica-: see the section "obtaining installation media"
[06:26]<drvnly2>after some checking on the internet i added a kernel parameter vga=0x31a to my kernel command in grub
[06:27]<drvnly2>this did what i wanted: my boot console and the later text mode consoles VT1-6 got small fonts
[06:28]<drvnly2>i was telling the kernel the vga mode to use to make such fonts
[06:28]<drvnly2>but i want to understand better what is going on internally
[06:29]<ezyrr->will I be able to irc as I download?
[06:29]<drvnly2>i suppose my video card actually integrated but equivalent to sis is svga probably?
[06:30]<fyr2fn>Erica-: download what?
[06:30]<ezyrr->as I install
[06:30]<fyr2fn>no
[06:30]<f9d1z>Is there a preferred method (and corresponding guide) for installing Debian on a fakeraid device?
[06:31]<fyr2fn>l4m3r: the installer willl do it for you. as long as the controller is supported in the kernel
[06:32]<f9d1z>The controller requires the dmraid package, and the net install does not seem to read the array correctly.
[06:32]<fyr2fn>err, the installer will just see two discs, and make an array for you
[06:33]<fyr2fn>dmraid is deprecated
[06:33]<rrgdjd>liable (and others): my wireless now works
[06:33]<rrgdjd>thanks!
[06:33]<f9d1z>Deprecated? yeesh
[06:33]<fyr2fn>sweet
[06:33]<rrgdjd>-D ndiswrapper i guess is dead :-)
[06:34]<xzzmqjlq00>DaveLib: I just finished getting framebuffer working on sis
[06:34]<f9d1z>standard soft raid would certainly be easier, but I use the fakeraid to run a windoze partition, also, so straight softraid is not quite an option
[06:34]<xzzmqjlq00>it sucked so bad I went out and bought a nvidia card :)
[06:34]<drvnly2>hardbop200: framebuffer? i dont know what that is
[06:35]<xzzmqjlq00>DaveLib: that is what you would *expect* to get when giving the vga= command, however sis uses the sisfb driver (see /usr/src/linux/Documentation/??video??/fb/
[06:36]<drvnly2>are the common pc video cards most of us and i prabably are using are thery svga?
[06:36]<xzzmqjlq00>not sure what you mean by that question...however, if you want nice text mode consoles on sis, vga= will *not* get it. you have to use video=sisfb etc etc
[06:37]<xzzmqjlq00>(that part had me hung up for *days*_
[06:38]<xzzmqjlq00>DaveLib: read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/sisfb.txt for more information
[06:39]<drvnly2>thanks hardbop200
[06:39]<xzzmqjlq00>you're very welcome.
[06:40]<f9d1z>So, if dmraid is deprecated, does that mean that Debian will no longer support device-mapping fakeraid?
[06:48]<rryg2jww>is there a way to install gnome without installing much of the supporting deps i don't need, like abiword and cdrecord and cdrdao? the point of this exercise is to run gnome in a vncserver to run a single app, not an entire suite.
[06:48]<mvs>!install gnome
[06:48]<mlcr>To install gnome on sarge or later, install gnome to install everything, install gnome-desktop-environment to install slightly less stuff, or install gnome-core to install even less, you will need x installed to use gnome, ask me about <set up x>
[06:49]<rryg2jww>thank you
[06:49]<rryg2jww>jesus that still installs samba. :-(
[06:49]<ugsvr2fn>RainbowW: Just install gnome-core
[06:50]<jvye>is it possible to install java5 sdk without fakeroot/java-package?
[06:50]<ugsvr2fn>JViz: yes
[06:50]<ugsvr2fn>JViz: What version of debian?
[06:50]<rryg2jww>JViz: yes, but it won't be installed in a way aptitude and related utilites can manage it.
[06:50]<jvye>debian3.1r2
[06:50]<rryg2jww>which may be what you want.
[06:50]<jvye>RainbowW: there's no apt package for it/
[06:50]<jvye>?
[06:50]<ugsvr2fn>JViz: unstable hava jdk deb packages.
[06:50]<zun_xjusn>trying to install or compile kdenlive is dependency hell
[06:51]<rryg2jww>JViz: the point of the fakeroot stuff is that the Sun JRE is distributed in a license that isn't compatible with Debian's distribution system. You must therefore go through a bunch of painful contortions.
[06:51]<ugsvr2fn>rue_house: What is kdenlive?
[06:51]<jvye>RainbowW: i hear that recently changed
[06:52]<zun_xjusn>its the only video editing sortware for linux that isn't cinneralla
[06:52]<rryg2jww>JViz: i'd be surprised. it would make slashdot. it hasn't.
[06:52]<ugsvr2fn>JViz: it did; hence why jdk is in unstable non-free section.
[06:52]<ugsvr2fn>RainbowW: yes it has
[06:53]<ugsvr2fn>!info sun-java5-jdk unstable
[06:53]<mlcr>sun-java5-jdk: (Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 5.0), section non-free/devel, is optional. Version: 1.5.0-07-1 (sid), Packaged size: 4881 kB, Installed size: 11368 kB
