[06:44]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>Not really
[06:44]<nac>ScottishCaptain: the nvidia card would be better supported
[06:44]<sdfvysa>256megs ram would give it an edge
[06:44]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>The ATI card sucks under Linux... But flies under Windows. Never tried the Nvidia under Linux.
[06:44]<sdfvysa>Not to mention Catalyst sucks all ways around :P
[06:44]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>Under Windows, the ATI did around 80FPS timedemo1 in Doom 3. The Nvidia did around 60fps.
[06:44]<fnzznv>Screw support... if you got both of them working absolutely optimally using current drivers, the nvidia would still be far quicker
[06:44]<sdfvysa>They you got a bug somewhere, scottish
[06:45]<lrrruym>Ferret, there are two new files when i plug it in: event4 and js0
[06:45]<sdfvysa>Ferret: strace doesn't seem to be installed
[06:45]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>So I take it that the 5950 Ultra would be best for XGL under Linux...
[06:45]<fnzznv>Languid: try this temporary test measure: ln -s input/js0 /dev/
[06:45]<sdfvysa>scottish, nvidia ALWAYS > ATi in linux
[06:45]<cxzysasxvjgo9>hi, anyone here using one of the new microsoft natural keyboards? I've got one, but last I checked it requires a kernel patch to get fully functional... anyone had luck w/ it?
[06:45]<nac>ScottishCaptain: the biggest thing about video cards in Linux is the quality of the drivers
[06:46]<lrrruym>Ferret, okay, what should i do after i try that?
[06:46]<nac>ScottishCaptain: so the nvidia card would probably be a lot better
[06:46]<fnzznv>Languid: Basically, I tihnk zsnes is to blame. Although, it will be worth checking permissions on those files... try catting them
[06:46]<nac>my integrated intel graphics is better than an ati card in linux
[06:46]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>Yup. Okay, thanks. As I said, the ATI card seriously sucked under 'Tux, so I'll give the Nvidia a go this time around.
[06:46]<sdfvysa>scottish, try new drivers on the nvidia in windows.
[06:47]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>sylvisj: I did- latest from Nvidia at the time (2 weeks ago I tested them).
[06:47]<fnzznv>Languid: If cat works, and crap appears when you press buttons, then the problem is with zsnes not finding it; that's where the test comes in. Hopefully zsnes will see it in /dev instead of /dev/input
[06:47]<sdfvysa>Ferret, strace isn't seeming to be installed, so what do I do now?
[06:47]<lrrruym>Ferret, when i cat js0, i get a bunch of garbage, but pressing keys on the joystick dont give me any more output
[06:47]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>Although, it could have been the fact that I tested them under Windows Server 2003 :P.
[06:47]<sdfvysa>Scottish: Don't know what to tell you, the 5950 should take the 9800 to school six ways to sunday
[06:47]<fnzznv>sylvisj: restart X
[06:47]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>sylvisj: thats what I thought...
[06:47]<fnzznv>sylvisj: It's worth a shot. :P
[06:47]<srjvvysxrrlvryg>Mmkay, thanks all. Off I go to reformat my PC's with Gentoo.
[06:47]<sdfvysa>Have fun.
[06:48]<sdfvysa>Ferret: lemme pause kde emerge first
[06:48]<fnzznv>Languid: try catting the event file instead
[06:48]<fnzznv>screen!
[06:48]<lrrruym>Ferret, tried, and get nothing
[06:48]<dzrajgw>screen++
[06:49]<sdfvysa>no luck, ferret
[06:49]<sdfvysa>Still getting the same error
[06:49]<lrrruym>Ferret, none of the event files respond to the joystick, same with the js files
[06:51]<sdfvysa>God, it takes FOREVER to su from user to root
[06:53]<fnzznv>Languid: Sounds like a problem with the device, in that case. Check dmesg for errors...
[06:53]<sndn_>god I love gentoo
[06:53]<sndn_>just makes life so easy
[06:53]<sdfvysa>Not for me
[06:53]<nac>sylvisj: maybe you have some weird pam issues
[06:53]<lrrruym>Ferret, there arent any errors, just what i posted earlier
[06:53]<sdfvysa>I can't even mount the cdrom :S
[06:53]<sdfvysa>pam?
[06:54]<nac>sylvisj: it's an authentication system
[06:54]<fnzznv>sylvisj: emerge strace, then run strace 2>&1 mount ...... | grep -e EACCES -e EPERM
[06:54]<srmnm>Is there an amarok-bin? >.<
[06:54]<nac>sylvisj: in theory, if pam was messed up it could cause problems with you mounting stuff and using su
[06:54]<sdfvysa>eck: would it explain why it takes forever and a day for su root to accept the root password?
[06:54]<fnzznv>sylvisj: post it in #Flood or a pastebin and poke people in here, I might not be about when you finish..
[06:54]<sdfvysa>What would I replace the ......'s after mount with?
[06:54]<fnzznv>sylvisj: It would explain that, yes.
[06:54]<nac>sylvisj: pam is really complicated though, so i have no idea how to troubleshoot pam issues
[06:55]<fnzznv>sylvisj: /mnt/cdrom
[06:55]<sdfvysa>k
[06:55]<lrrruym>Ferret, i got it working, thanks so much for your help! :)
[06:55]<sdfvysa>I know at least some of the files on the livecd were buggered, pam might be one of them
[06:55]<fnzznv>eck: Yeah, I got so sick of trying to fix pam errors that I decided to get rid of it entirely.
[06:55]<sdfvysa>Is there a way to just reinstall it or something?
[06:55]<fnzznv>Languid: Interesting. o.o
[06:55]<pnfywj>can anyone recommed any good open source games to emerge? I am bored of tuxracer
[06:56]<fnzznv>sylvisj: emerge -1av pam shadow
