[07:44]<zvzndu>well, better to do this now, rather than later
[07:44]<rnmznwmra>Zefiris: you here? its still updating lmao
[07:45]<zzzlnpzuwv>anyone know any good gentoo livecds?
[07:45]<jjvluv>farhanahmed: tr '\n' 'whatever' < old.php > new.php
[07:45]<irdevxjs>how do I find the "topmost build error"
[07:45]<jjvluv>grapefru1t: rr4
[07:46]<jjvluv>grapefru1t: livedvd ain't half-bad either
[07:46]<jjvluv>but I still prefer grml as my rescue disk
[07:46]<zzzlnpzuwv>ootput: do you have url for rr4?
[07:46]<zzzlnpzuwv>nvm
[07:46]<zzzlnpzuwv>got it :)
[07:46]<gfvggsvzz>hey guys what are the absolute minimum to build gcc and glibc ? would an emerge -etva gcc glibc tell me that ?
[07:47]<jjvluv>grapefru1t: it's lxnay's, and there's a thread on the forums
[07:47]<zvzndu>Draconx, btw, what exactly is the toolchain?
[07:48]<zvzndu>i think i only have a very general idea of what it actually is
[07:48]<dzrajgw>atreyu, things like gcc, ld, as, - the programs you need to compile things
[07:48]<zvzndu>oooh ok
[07:48]<zvzndu>cool, thanks
[07:48]<gfvggsvzz>Draconx> how can you fix a borked toolchain ?
[07:49]<dzrajgw>ElvenStar, the /usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap.sh will rebuild it, but you will need working stuff already.... if its actually broken you're pretty much screwed
[07:50]<awnsjdn-jq000>im goign to get some dinner and do this build without the gui. I really want to do my own kernel. I would also like to make sure I have the nvidia module loaded. Is there any way to start the livecd in console mode?
[07:50]<vrfdghrfadjg>Hello
[07:50]<gfvggsvzz>Draconx> whats the minimum requirements to rebuild the toolchain ( which bare essential packages need to be working ? )
[07:50]<jjvluv>coincidentally, Bye
[07:50]<dzrajgw>ElvenStar, you could pull the files out of the stage tarball and then rebuild them with those scripts
[07:51]<vrfdghrfadjg>Anyone know of a tool similar to hdparm that can be used with sata drives, sks /dev/sda type devices?
[07:51]<dzrajgw>ElvenStar, probably binutils gcc glibc
[07:51]<gfvggsvzz>Draconx> ty
[07:51]<gfvggsvzz>ValinHalcyon> i think hdparm does it does it not ?
[07:51]<dzrajgw>ValinHalcyon, the aptly named sdparm
[07:52]<vrfdghrfadjg>lol..thnx
[07:52]<vrfdghrfadjg>hdparm generates a lot of unsupported errors
[07:52]<awnsjdn-jq000>:(
[07:53]<gfvggsvzz>thanks again Draconx
[07:53]<vrfdghrfadjg>UNFORTUNATELY..someone forgot to include sdparm on the LiveCD. .. >:|
[07:53]<awnsjdn-jq000>ValinHalcyon, do you know of a way to boot the livecd in console mode?
[07:53]<vrfdghrfadjg>I don't use the LiveCD that way
[07:53]<vrfdghrfadjg>so I've never tried
[07:54]<rjjpnd>Awesome-o2000: control-alt-f1
[07:54]<awnsjdn-jq000>goofey, im hoping to modprobe the nvidia module
[07:54]<awnsjdn-jq000>I guess my card is too new for autodetection
[07:55]<rjjpnd>Awesome-o2000: i'm pretty sure there's a no-X command you can pass to the kernel at the first prompt
[07:55]<awnsjdn-jq000>I wonder how I go about setting up xorg.conf then?
[07:55]<rjjpnd>if it was me, I wouldn't worry about the livecd detecting you card
[07:55]<awnsjdn-jq000>yeah I think im just being stupid
[07:56]<rjjpnd>not stupid
[07:56]<yntzq>Awesome-o2000: add a "3" to the kernel line
[07:56]<awnsjdn-jq000>I guess I can deal with an initial build with a genkernel kernel too
[07:56]<rjjpnd>i just think it doesn't matter if you have X for the install - especially if you don't mind istalling from the console
[07:56]<rjjpnd>no reason you have to use genkernel
[07:56]<awnsjdn-jq000>I was doing the gui install
[07:57]<awnsjdn-jq000>but I think im going to do without that
[07:57]<dzrajgw>i hate livecds with X on them, all they do is make me sit there while waiting for X to load
[07:57]<rjjpnd>you get your kernels from online, not from the cd
[07:57]<rml>ElvenStar; hey! remember me form yestarday?
[07:57]<awnsjdn-jq000>Draconx, its rather fast here
[07:57]<vrfdghrfadjg>I thought the Gentoo LiveCD only booted to the console?
[07:57]<rjjpnd>i'm pretty sure, if you want to use the installer, there's a non-X version
[07:57]<dzrajgw>Awesome-o2000, the gentoo minimal cd boots in like 5 seconds
[07:57]<rjjpnd>ValinHalcyon: not anymore
[07:57]<vrfdghrfadjg>Then again, I only use the minimal CD
[07:57]<gfvggsvzz>gdp> yes
[07:58]<rml>ElvenStar; ok, it finished recompiling (that took a while). I dont wanna mess up things, but once its compiled, what do I have to do? Just copy the bzImage to /boot and add an entry to the bootloader?
[07:59]<vrfdghrfadjg>Where can I find the LiveCD maintainers?
[07:59]<vrfdghrfadjg>I'd like to strangle one or two...
[07:59]<frsvgjmn_>how can i set my mouse type to serial in xorg.conf?
[08:00]<vrfdghrfadjg>MUST. HAVE. SDPARM. ON LIVECD!!! ARGH!
[08:00]<irdevxjs>has anyone used Maple?
[08:00]<irdevxjs>is there an open source alternative?
[08:00]<gfvggsvzz>gdp> did you use the command i gave you ? "cd /usr/src/linux && make menuconfig && make && make modules modules_install install && reboot" ?if so you should be running the new kernel now ... if not what command did you use to build the kernel ?
[08:01]<vrfdghrfadjg>Elven..don't forget to copy the new kernel to /boot...
[08:01]<vrfdghrfadjg>:P
[08:01]<vrfdghrfadjg>or does the install command automate even that now?
[08:01]<gfvggsvzz>ValinHalcyon> anytime i have ever used that command i get the new updated kernel anyway , may just be the way i have grub setup ...
[08:02]<dzrajgw>ValinHalcyon, "make install" copies stuff to /boot and creates vmlinux/vmlinux.old symlinks
[08:02]<vrfdghrfadjg>nice..I have to copy it every time
[08:02]<rml>ElvenStar: o, i just did make && make modules_install
[08:02]<gfvggsvzz>ValinHalcyon> what Draconx said
[08:02]<vrfdghrfadjg>ah..what gdp said...
[08:02]<rml>ElvenStar; i dont have to do the whole thing again, do I? with doing make modules install is enough?
[08:02]<vrfdghrfadjg>I do the same
[08:02]<dzrajgw>make {,{modules_,}inst}all
[08:03]<gfvggsvzz>gdp> do a "make install && reboot"
[08:03]<2rrrmjr>running just 'make' will build the modules
[08:03]<vrfdghrfadjg>I mainly keep old kernels for backup in cas the new one fubars or something
[08:03]<gfvggsvzz>beandog> i do it anyway
[08:04]<rml>ElvenStar ok, ty
[08:04]<gfvggsvzz>gdp> np
[08:04]<zyvnzzrv>IamEthos: How'd that script work?
[08:04]<czysvrfygj>what do you recommand to burn dvd-rw ?
[08:04]<zyvnzzrv>k3b
[08:04]<dzrajgw>kristalino, k3b
[08:04]<irdevxjs>RiverRat, haven't tried it yet
[08:05]<irdevxjs>I've got too many things going on at the moment
[08:05]<vrfdghrfadjg>Anyone have suggestions for sata served partitions over a RAID1? I was looking at xfs
[08:05]<czysvrfygj>Draconx, does k3b use cdrecord or growisofs ?
[08:05]<zyvnzzrv>growisofs
[08:05]<zyvnzzrv>I think it uses cdrecord too
[08:05]<gfvggsvzz>RiverRat> both i think
[08:05]<dzrajgw>kristalino, i wouldn't know, I only have a cd burner and it usually uses cdrecord (supports a bunch of programs)
