[08:52]<mgrm_ogg>if you crap out your portage system/world packages, you can do a stage 1
[08:52]<rggjgg>but all problems are yours
[08:53]<vrfdghrfadjg>Though, doing the stage 3..then finishing the install, then doing an emerge -e world && revdep-rebuild && source /etc/profile && env-update is fun
[08:53]<mgrm_ogg>they just "implemented inadequacies" in upkeep, like removing iputils, binutils, and a bunch of other "usefull" packages from system
[08:54]<mgrm_ogg>so has Fiber got sshd running yet?
[08:54]<vrfdghrfadjg>Gives you something pretty close to a stage 1 instal..provided you tweaked the cflags before you execute that command
[08:54]<fy2nz>SSH Daemon?
[08:54]<fy2nz>Not yet
[08:54]<mgrm_ogg>yeah
[08:54]<vrfdghrfadjg>he doesn't need it Demon
[08:54]<gfvggsvzz>\o/ rebuilding toolchain \o/
[08:54]<fy2nz>Wow..Gentoo removed partitions fast
[08:54]<vrfdghrfadjg>erm..dead one
[08:54]<vrfdghrfadjg>uhh..
[08:55]<vrfdghrfadjg>pattitions are like very tiny
[08:55]<fy2nz>Does it mean all my data is gone
[08:55]<vrfdghrfadjg>it doesn't actually remove data
[08:55]<vrfdghrfadjg>it just removes the indexes to tell the OS where the data is
[08:55]<fy2nz>oh
[08:55]<vrfdghrfadjg>so for all intents and purposes, yes..it's gone
[08:55]<fy2nz>how to remove data
[08:55]<rggjgg>nope, you just can't access it anymore for the moment
[08:55]<fy2nz>ok
[08:55]<mgrm_ogg>you don't "need" to zero fill the now empty space
[08:56]<2rrrmjr>thank goodness for that.
[08:56]<vrfdghrfadjg>Now I'm a bit tired and can't recall the command to find the size of a partition in GB...
[08:56]<fy2nz>What is a swap partition
[08:56]<fy2nz>And should I create one
[08:56]<vrfdghrfadjg>it's a partition you can trade with other linux users for file sharing
[08:56]<vrfdghrfadjg>:P
[08:56]<mgrm_ogg>you know about windows "virtual memory" ?
[08:56]<fy2nz>Nice
[08:56]<2rrrmjr>heh
[08:56]<vrfdghrfadjg>I"M KIDDING
[08:57]<vrfdghrfadjg>lol
[08:57]<2rrrmjr>what a punk
[08:57]<fy2nz>omg I can't wait to learn Gentoo well
[08:57]<fy2nz>:P
[08:57]<mgrm_ogg>well windows uses a file on your hd for virtual memory, linux uses a partition so it doesn't have to care about contents over boot
[08:57]<vrfdghrfadjg>right
[08:57]<fy2nz>..
[08:57]<vrfdghrfadjg>win386.swp
[08:58]<vrfdghrfadjg>you might have seen it
[08:58]<vrfdghrfadjg>it's pretty damned huge normally
[08:58]<mgrm_ogg>386spart.par ?
[08:58]<fy2nz>like RAM
[08:58]<vrfdghrfadjg>that too soemtimes
[08:58]<mgrm_ogg>my xp box has like 3gb between swap and hiberfill
[08:59]<fy2nz>how big should my swap be
[08:59]<mgrm_ogg>2x your ram
[08:59]<vrfdghrfadjg>I need a BIT of help...how can I get the size of a partition in GB?
[08:59]<mgrm_ogg>is suggested anyways
[08:59]<rggjgg>BS
[08:59]<vrfdghrfadjg>I need to find how much space I've allocated for SDa3
[08:59]<fy2nz>lol
[08:59]<mgrm_ogg>df ?
[08:59]<fy2nz>command p
[08:59]<vrfdghrfadjg>thnx..god..brain dead
[08:59]<gfvggsvzz>df -h ?
[09:00]<rggjgg>512 MB swap should be sufficient unless you're box is ancient
[09:00]<fy2nz>fdisk /dev/hda then type p
[09:00]<vrfdghrfadjg>yeah..thnx
[09:00]<fy2nz>df is what
[09:00]<mgrm_ogg>are you still in fdisk fiber?
[09:01]<fy2nz>Yes
[09:01]<vrfdghrfadjg>df was to help me
[09:01]<gfvggsvzz>genone> i got 256 mb ram with 64 mb shared with onboard gfx what swap size should i have ?
[09:01]<mgrm_ogg>are you using the install handbook ?
[09:01]<fy2nz>I just removed all partitions
[09:01]<fy2nz>thinking of a scheme
[09:01]<fy2nz>:P
[09:01]<fy2nz>Sometimes Dead_One
[09:01]<vrfdghrfadjg>ok...df didn't help me../dev/sd3 is an unmounted partition because I don't have a filesystem on it yet..and I need to know how big it is. :S
[09:02]<rggjgg>ElvenStar: depends what you intend to run on that box. For KDE/Gnome you probably need more than 512 MB swap, for anything else 512 MB should be sufficient
[09:02]<mgrm_ogg>fdisk and print out the partition table
[09:02]<fy2nz>do what I said
[09:02]<gfvggsvzz>Fiber> /boot / /home swpspace is a pretty standard partition scheme
[09:02]<rggjgg>ElvenStar: but then KDE/Gnome might run pretty crappy
[09:02]<fy2nz>Yep
[09:02]<vrfdghrfadjg>./dev/sda3 69 19457 155742142+ fd Linux raid autodetect
[09:02]<cjzsv1g>recommend him to use fluxbox
[09:02]<gfvggsvzz>genone> kde gdm
[09:02]<vrfdghrfadjg>anyone know how to convert blocked to GB?
[09:02]<vrfdghrfadjg>blocks
[09:02]<fy2nz>=\
[09:03]<gfvggsvzz>korst3n> yer i like windowmaker
[09:03]<vrfdghrfadjg>man..I need to sleep...I can't believe myself..
[09:03]<fy2nz>Elven
[09:03]<gfvggsvzz>Fiber> ?
[09:03]<fy2nz>I make a boot, a root and a swap
[09:03]<vrfdghrfadjg>./dev/sd3 is 159.45 GB
[09:03]<vrfdghrfadjg>bleh
[09:03]<cjzsv1g>hmm.. not flux or wmaker.. he should use ion3
[09:04]<rggjgg>ElvenStar: generally if you *need* much swapspace you should really upgrade your ram
[09:04]<fy2nz>I have 1 GB Ram
[09:04]<vrfdghrfadjg>go for 512MB of swap..hard drive space is cheap.
[09:04]<gfvggsvzz>genone> yer but i'm cheap ....
[09:04]<cjzsv1g>or wot was that, a wm which have no titles etc
[09:04]<vrfdghrfadjg>I have 4GB of RAM..and I use a 256MB swap
[09:04]<vrfdghrfadjg>jsut in case
