[22:21]<myllggvzjl>+SkramX: boot LiveCD, chroot, then fix the problem
[22:21]<zvzndu>+b/c emerge needs me to get the file manually, and sun doesn't offer it anymore
[22:21]<zvzndu>+i suppose i can just use blackdown-sdk right?
[22:22]<rxrgrnqw0t>+SkramX: You got it. If for whatever reason your bootloader can't find the kernel image, botting in using a livecd and fixing the problem ls always the easiest / best answer (altho .. I'm not a grub expert, but IIRC grub has some facilities to tweak things if it actually does boot itself)
[22:22]<sczrdx>+Matas: should have been in /boot
[22:22]<2zrm_>-Renacor, umm, you added the option to the kernel config, rebuilt, moved kernel to /boot, rebooted?
[22:22]<sczrdx>+on our servers we always have multiple kernels.. but this is my personal laptop and i hadnt yet
[22:22]<sczrdx>+okay
[22:22]<rmzyrrg>-i get an error Fatal Server Error: No GLX visuals available, what to do?
[22:22]<zggzajz>+brad_: yep
[22:22]<zggzajz>+im using 2.6.16-r7
[22:23]<sczrdx>+so.. hopefully the file just moved and i have a backup (pretty sure i do).. if i am in a big rush, i can just use genkernel and tweak it later, right?
[22:23]<zggzajz>+I only see "CRC32c CRC algorithm"
[22:23]<mrvrs>+SkramX: you can boot into the grub prompt and use "find" if you remember the kernel filename
[22:23]<zggzajz>+the other ones arent in there like this one shows http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-413186-highlight-zaptel.html?sid=d00e2a078a775613dff04816f5a156be
[22:23]<2zrm_>-SkramX, another great thing to try is to make a grub boot floppy/cd and check to see what grub will see the devices as, and manually can find the kernel
[22:23]<zggzajz>+brad_: nm found it under library routines
[22:23]<rmzyrrg>-i get an error Fatal Server Error: No GLX visuals available, what to do?
[22:23]<mrvrs>+SkramX: then you can manually boot from the grub prompt and can fix "menu.lst" once you are in. No need for cd
[22:23]<sczrdx>+brad_: a grub boot cd?
[22:23]<sczrdx>+hmm
[22:23]<rxrgrnqw0t>+ACTION personally loathes grub
[22:24]<sczrdx>+meh
[22:24]<sczrdx>+which is best?
[22:24]<du2ydusu2y>+Is there a way to find out what versions of gcc a specific package was compiled under, or perhaps find all packages that were compiled with a certain version of gcc?
[22:24]<sczrdx>+gentoo live cd?
[22:24]<mrvrs>+SkramX: if you do not remember the filename, boot the livecd, mount the boot partition, edit menu.lst
[22:24]<sczrdx>+Matas: okay
[22:25]<sczrdx>+uhmm
[22:25]<dzsfjgd>-Which directory do files get extracted to if I run tar zxfv on an archive without any other parameters?
[22:25]<mrvrs>+SkramX: if you know the filename, no need to CD, just boot from the grub prompt
[22:25]<sczrdx>+will have to look at how to chroot.
[22:25]<rxrgrnqw0t>+SkramX: You mean, which is the best solution to your problem? Try what Matas suggests methinks. If that fails, doing the livecd thing (chrooting into your install / fixing problems / reinstall MBR if necessary) is the way to go
[22:25]<sczrdx>+i forget
[22:25]<mrvrs>+SkramX: there is no need to chroot, just mount the partition where your kernel is and fix menu.lst
[22:25]<sczrdx>+ok
[22:25]<du2ydusu2y>+DrSlony: your current working directory
[22:25]<zz2dmpuz2d>+yubimusubi: some packages will tell you (the python interactive shell for example), but system-wide the only way I know of would be guessing based on time the package was merged and what GCC version was installed at that time
[22:25]<rmzyrrg>-i get an error Fatal Server Error: No GLX visuals available, what to do?
[22:25]<sczrdx>+downloading iso now..
[22:26]<du2ydusu2y>+rabidfurby: Ah, that's what I was afraid of...thanks :)
[22:26]<dzsfjgd>-cd /root/opera-9.0-20060411.5-shared-qt.i386-en-236/
[22:26]<nnnnd>+is it possible for me to move my gentoo to a new computer from intel to amd. Any why to config it to start with my new hardware?
[22:26]<nnnnd>+way*
[22:26]<sczrdx>+i dont know how this kernel could have just disappeared.
[22:26]<sczrdx>+Oy.
[22:27]<sczrdx>+worst comes to worst i just make a genkernel real quick to get it up and running
[22:27]<du2ydusu2y>+Adriaan: you shouldn't ask a question more than once...do you have glx enabled in xorg.conf?
[22:27]<2zrm_>-Renacor, sorry, it was the last menu, but it's "library routines"
[22:27]<mrvrs>+SkramX: before you rush ahead, understand what's the problem. does grub start ok? does it give you an error message? what is it?
[22:27]<sczrdx>+Matas: file not found
[22:28]<sczrdx>+ill brb, will try finding the file, if unsuccessful will get the iso
[22:28]<ez2zmjz>-hey, im trying to get into my gentoo and it keeps saying that the system is going down on sat may 20 at a time that has aleady passed, and it wont let me log in
[22:28]<mrvrs>+SkramX: ok, then grub is ok, you won't need to re-MRB, just need to edit the config file
[22:28]<sczrdx>+yeah
[22:28]<sczrdx>+alright brb
[22:28]<zz2dmpuz2d>+zezzy: you could recompile all packages without -march, which *should* make it so that you could just copy the whole FS over...I'm sure there are gotchas I'm missing though
[22:28]<sczrdx>+(brb.. laptop is upstairs)
[22:29]<nnnnd>+err ok, any manual on "how to" out there? =P
[22:31]<ez2zmjz>-im trying to get into my gentoo and it keeps saying that the system is going down on sat may 20 at a time that has aleady passed, and it wont let me log in.. can anyone help me get back in?
[22:31]<syddnee>+why is gcc 4.1.0 in masked?
[22:31]<2zrm_>-zezzy, that very much depends on the differences in the hardware and how much you've builtin to the kernel/as modules
[22:31]<zsc>-simmerz: cause its not safe to use yet
[22:32]<mrvrs>+zabador: I have not seen such a thing. At what point of the boot process does it say so?
[22:32]<ez2zmjz>-i just turned it on
[22:32]<zggzajz>+hey what package is mpeg123 in?
[22:32]<ez2zmjz>-im on my laptop right now
[22:33]<syddnee>+rsk: any particular reason? 4.x has been out for some time!
[22:33]<nnnnd>+brad_: oh, its a totally different computer :/
[22:33]<ez2zmjz>-after that it says please ignore underlying account module
[22:33]<zsc>-simmerz: some packages dont compile with it
[22:33]<ez2zmjz>-i cant even get into my root account
[22:33]<2zrm_>-zezzy, but how much did you build in?
[22:33]<ez2zmjz>-it says tat when i try to log in
[22:34]<mrvrs>+zabador: ah, so you get a login prompt allright?
[22:34]<syddnee>+rsk: ok
[22:34]<ez2zmjz>-yup
[22:34]<ez2zmjz>-but it wont let me log in, it just keeps giving me this stuff
[22:34]<2zrm_>-if it's bare minimum, like what i do (just what is in your mahcine), you basically have to rebuild the entire system stuff
[22:34]<mrvrs>+zabador: if you do not log in, does the system stay running ?
[22:35]<rxrgrnqw0t>+Renacor: media-sound/mpg123
[22:35]<ez2zmjz>-..... yea
[22:35]<sczrdx>+no luck.. it seemed like it saw the file, and i rentered it to make sure, but still gets file not found... will use livecd and mount boot
[22:35]<sczrdx>+arg
[22:35]<ez2zmjz>-it started to say this before the shutdown was saposed to occur but now it was saposed to happen and i still cant get in
[22:36]<ez2zmjz>-afterwards thought if it wont shutdown itself i should reboot, so i hardbooted the system n im still getting this
[22:36]<tbkdrg>-I'm having trouble accessing Windows shares across network. Samba works, as I can view the linux machine from Windows, but I cannot access anything from linux to windows. I have lisa installed, I have konq compiled with samba use flag... no luck :(
[22:36]<adjurrww>+what is the syntax for modprobing ntfs module? modprobe ntfs?
[22:36]<azvydus>+I accidently compiled my kernel with reiserfs (which my / filesystem uses) as a module. So, I emerged mkinitrd and ran "mkinitrd --preload=reiserfs /boot/mkinitrd.gz 2.6.16-gentoo-r7" and added "initrd /boot/initrd.gz" to grub. When I boot, it says can't mount VFS on unknown-blocks-something. Any ideas?
[22:37]<rxrgrnqw0t>+jyoungxx: yeup, mehitnks <checks ntfs module name>
[22:37]<rxrgrnqw0t>+jyoungxx: yeup. modprobe ntfs
[22:37]<mrvrs>+zabador: I am sorry but I am quite clueless. But my guess is that this is a problem with pam
[22:37]<mrvrs>+zabador: can you boot into single-user mode?
[22:38]<ez2zmjz>-nope, tried that
[22:38]<ez2zmjz>-same result
[22:38]<ez2zmjz>-this is a new install so i guess i can just start over again
[22:38]<ez2zmjz>-it worked for a few days
[22:38]<ez2zmjz>-so i dont have much to loose by doing so
[22:39]<mrvrs>+zabador: no idea if it helps, but I would try this
[22:39]<mrvrs>+zabador: boot from a cd, mount disks, chroot into your gentoo and reemerge pam. make sure to run dispatch-conf or etc-update afterwards
