[01:36]<vxnaxzys>NeddySeagoon: it messed up glibc. now i can't compile things that use stdlib.h
[01:36]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>teferi`, libexpat is a killer
[01:36]<ma-pu>wth. genlop isn't working now
[01:37]<2rrrmjr>what version are you running
[01:37]<vxnaxzys>NeddySeagoon: and it broke some shared libraries. i'm just going to skip over to gcc4 whenever i upgrade GCC
[01:37]<ma-pu> Installed: 0.30.5
[01:37]<2rrrmjr>hmm
[01:37]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>thechris, I can't say I had any problems
[01:38]<vxnaxzys>NeddySeagoon: it may be because i installed GCC4 before gcc3.4. i found that after merging gcc3.4, i could no longer use eix unless i switched to gcc4. so i unmerged gcc3.4 and that fixed the eix issue
[01:39]<vxnaxzys>NeddySeagoon: but now when i compile code that i wrote, it complains about stdlib.h throwing exceptions
[01:39]<vxnaxzys>i'm attempting to recompile glibc in hopes it fixes things
[01:39]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>thechris, I'm waiting for gcc-4.x to hit ~arch before I play with it
[01:40]<v1zv1w>why don't xapps run when I su to root?
[01:40]<vxnaxzys>NeddySeagoon: IIRC it has. i really only use GCC4 for my own development work. my system is compiled with gcc3.3 otherwise
[01:40]<v1zv1w>I try to set DISPLAY
[01:40]<v1zv1w>but it doesn't work
[01:41]<ma-pu>do you 'su' or 'su -'? works fine for me
[01:42]<ma-pu>but I use 'startx' not gdm/xdm
[01:42]<v1zv1w>I use "sudo su -"
[01:42]<azjam>evening all, i need some advice with a kernel compile error message I am getting after the original one borked. I ma repairing using an amd livecd.
[01:42]<v1zv1w>su works find
[01:42]<v1zv1w>fine
[01:42]<ma-pu>what does it say, could not open display?
[01:43]<fygjfnud__>lo?
[01:43]<azjam>asm-offsets.c:1: code mode 'kernel' not supported in 32 bit mode
[01:44]<azjam>I am trying to get an amd 64 bit system up and running so would appreciate some help as I cannot get a lot of google info. It mentions about cross compiling.
[01:45]<xjffjwsjuf>crocd, u see the line C arch/x86_64/kernel/asm-offsets.s ?
[01:45]<azjam>yup
[01:45]<ma-pu>I forget how to do it, instead of x86 you'll want amd64 for keywords
[01:45]<ma-pu>(i believe)
[01:45]<v1zv1w>vo: couldn't open the X11 display ()!
[01:45]<azjam>OK how do i do that dj-fu
[01:45]<ma-pu>that could be entirely wrong, actually, forget it
[01:45]<ma-pu>i've not the slightest idea, sorry
[01:45]<azjam>np
[01:46]<v1zv1w>Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
[01:46]<v1zv1w>Xlib: No protocol specified
[01:46]<xjffjwsjuf>crocd, u using the livecd on the amd64 machine?
[01:47]<azjam>damn everythig was going well until this kernel that I was trying to repair. I could get all the options I wanted in the kernel menu but when I did the make && make modules_install the error came up
[01:47]<zezjz>I'm trying to tunnel distcc through ssh. I used to have it working fine, but after several weeks of disuse, I find that the ssh keys aren't working anymore. Is anyone else doing this that can answer a quick question or two for me?
[01:47]<azjam>hollowsoul: yes
[01:48]<azjam>i think I might just wipe the system and do a manual build from scratch.
[01:48]<xjffjwsjuf>crocd, u got a web browser handy?
[01:48]<azjam>on this second system yes
[01:49]<dzzcmjzlx>I can't get portage to recognize ccache and I can't figure out why; emerge info indicates ccache is in FEATURES but ccache -s shows 0 likes it's still brand-new.
[01:49]<azjam>i have a switch that I swap from one to the other
[01:50]<2zzznva>anyone know how i can get xterm to resize itself to some pre-defined size?
[01:50]<2zzznva>kinda like you can do in Konsole
[01:51]<cjppnnbuee>hey folks. I can put any linux distro on my office workstation. Developing pure real-time C algorithms. Need oprofile etc. How stable is gentoo's amd64?
[01:51]<xjffjwsjuf>crocd, double check u are using a 64bit LiveCD and a 64bit stage tarball and u have setup /etc/make.conf for your amd64 and also have a read @ http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-459132.html && http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-443233.html
[01:52]<dzzcmjzlx>CoffeeBuzz, well I'm using amd64 and just about all "unstable" gcc4, xorg7... looks good! gcc4 is nice
[01:52]<xjffjwsjuf>crocd, srry cant help much more dont have a 64bit processor myself :(
[01:52]<2rrrmjr>yah, amd64 on gentoo works pretty well
[01:52]<2rrrmjr>I anticipated a lot of problems, but havent had hardly any at all
[01:52]<cjppnnbuee>beandog, done any development using 64-bit technology?>
[01:53]<2rrrmjr>CoffeeBuzz: nope
[01:53]<2rrrmjr>CoffeeBuzz: just php stuff.
[01:54]<vxnaxzys>i wonder if this glibc upgrade will even fix my problems. i hope it does. its annoying not being able to compile anything that uses stdlib
[01:54]<brgrgcgg>where are my usb-devices?
[01:54]<brgrgcgg>like...and what parameters should i use to mount my mp3-player?
[01:55]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>thechris, you getting glibc-2.4 ?
[01:55]<2rrrmjr>Defaults should be fine
[01:55]<vxnaxzys>CoffeeBuzz: i've done limited development with 64-bit stuff. integers are still 32bit...
[01:55]<azjam>hollowsoul: np at least you were able to give me something to think about. and I got an answer that is a relief of which I am gratefull
[01:55]<ma-pu>hald/dbus & pmount are probably a good bet for mp3 players and usb devices
[01:55]<azjam>thanks
[01:55]<vxnaxzys>NeddySeagoon: oh no. thats just a bad idea it seems. everyday people come in here and complain about glibc2.4
[01:55]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>Baeaeken, It will be a SCSI drive
[01:55]<2rrrmjr>Baeaeken: if its plugged in, try fdisk -l
[01:55]<2rrrmjr>Or just look at dmesg
[01:55]<2rrrmjr>or use ivman
[01:55]<2rrrmjr>what dj-fu said.
[01:56]<cjppnnbuee>thechris, yeah, long's and longlongs become 64bit though. I'm just wondering how I can take advantage of these 64-bit registers
[01:56]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>thechris, All I can say is worksforme
[01:56]<brgrgcgg>NeddySeagoon: kay
[01:57]<brgrgcgg>beandog: Ah, found it..
[01:57]<2rrrmjr>:)
[01:57]<vxnaxzys>CoffeeBuzz: for what purpose? do you need 64bit values for anything? maybe you can use MMX ops on them?
[01:57]<brgrgcgg>beandog: what parameters do i use when i mount it?
[01:57]<2rrrmjr>Baeaeken: try defaults first... mount /dev/sdxX /mnt/usb
[01:57]<2rrrmjr>or whatever.
[01:57]<2rrrmjr>See if that works. Its probably vfat.
[01:57]<brgrgcgg>okay
[01:57]<ma-pu>genlop --list --date `date +%D` <-- :D genlop is great for when you break stuff
[01:57]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>Baeaeken, -t vfat
[01:58]<brgrgcgg>NeddySeagoon: ah
[01:58]<ma-pu>I've found myself countless times thinking "What were all those damn deps which it emerged"
[01:58]<cjppnnbuee>thechris, well I'm not sure for what purpose. speed, efficiency. I architec real-time systems but i'm not entirely sure what 64-bit has to offer in terms of performance (if anything)
[01:58]<dja|xjdn>CoffeeBuzz: has advantages for databases and anything using large numbers.
[01:58]<dja|xjdn>although this is all a bit off-topic
[01:59]<vxnaxzys>CoffeeBuzz: are you writing ASM or some higher level language. AMD64/EMT64 have extra registers
[01:59]<cjppnnbuee>doc|home, yeah sorry. btw : from wikipedia -> "Gentoo Linux supports a very robust 64-bit environment. "
[01:59]<dja|xjdn>CoffeeBuzz: :)
[01:59]<irdevxjs>can anyone recommend a particular Go software? roger55 recommended looking in games-board but I'm not sure which ones are good and which aren't
[02:00]<brgrgcgg>NeddySeagoon: works gr8 =P
[02:00]<brgrgcgg>NeddySeagoon: when i umount...do i umount /mnt/usb or /dev/sdc?
[02:00]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>Baeaeken, glad to hear it
[02:00]<ggmmdsgrrjjg>either
[02:00]<ma-pu>Baeaeken, either of them, doesn't matter
