[14:28]<rfprrruyr>MetaPhaze: my kernel compiling doesn't take long enough for me to care, tbh
[14:28]<mzzvxvzmnz>ElPenguin, there is no i686 on the hardened from the mirror sites....
[14:28]<mnvrpxrnn>i want to speak to the person in charge of the enlightenment branch of the tree... he/she is doing something wrong!
[14:28]<kzzvzrys>what must I emerge for tr keymap?
[14:28]<rfprrruyr>DarthVader: oh right, sorry, i wasn't paying enough attention. you'll have to get the generic x86 one
[14:28]<rfprrruyr>MetaPhaze: no, it's just unstable as hell
[14:29]<mzzvxvzmnz>ElPenguin, ah..ok.aehae.thanks..
[14:29]<mnvrpxrnn>ElPenguin, not really i have no problems with it
[14:29]<kzzvzrys>userlocales?
[14:29]<mzzvxvzmnz>ElPenguin, then use the hardened kerenel?
[14:29]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: for a start, you need to compile with +nls
[14:29]<mnvrpxrnn>ElPenguin, i even use it with kde and gnome
[14:29]<rfprrruyr>DarthVader: you specifically asked for hardened...
[14:29]<kzzvzrys>ElPenguin compile what?
[14:29]<kzzvzrys>userlocales?
[14:29]<mnvrpxrnn>ElPenguin, but when i compile it myself it works differently than when i emerge it
[14:29]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: all your software
[14:30]<mzzvxvzmnz>ElPenguin, yes..hehee..thanks a lot..
[14:30]<kzzvzrys>ElPenguin no need to emerge userlocales then?
[14:30]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: oh and you should recompile system too. that will take absolutely ages i will say now. and you may as well emerge unicode now
[14:30]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: you will need that too
[14:31]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: if you're going to be breaking everything apart and recompiling, enable unicode, nptl nptlonly nls userlocales and put your custom locales in the userlocales config file
[14:31]<2ggaz_>ElPenguin: ok emerge sync is done, next i emerge -uvN world?
[14:31]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: yes indeed
[14:32]<dj9cxzysv>I would add D myself to the emerge
[14:32]<2ggaz_>ElPenguin: is this anything to be concerned about, it said it at the end of emerge sync, * IMPORTANT: 20 config files in /etc need updating.
[14:32]<2ggaz_> * IMPORTANT: 1 config files in /usr/kde/3.4/share/config need updating
[14:32]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: use that trick i told you a minute ago. while it is compiling the first package, open another terminal and type the same thing with an added f
[14:32]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: not just yet
[14:32]<kzzvzrys>okay, first I put USE="+nls" in /etc/make.conf then I emerge userlocales unicode then emerge -uND world, right?
[14:32]<dj9cxzysv>yes Kartagis
[14:32]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: unicode nptl nptlonly nls userlocales
[14:33]<kzzvzrys>ElPenguin and DJ4Christ thanks
[14:33]<tfkdfn>hmm, what gst-plugins- package is id3v2mux in? (its not enabled while building -good, must be in something else)
[14:33]<dj9cxzysv>np Kartagis but ElPenguin gave you more info
[14:33]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: put them all in, because one day when you emerge update it is going to want to recompile one of the lower libraries that uses those flags
[14:33]<tfkdfn>(the gstreamer element, that is)
[14:34]<2ggaz_>huh, why is portage on the list of things to be portaged?
[14:34]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: i recommend you do an emerge -uDvNa system if you know how to recover from gcc dying
[14:34]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: portage updates
[14:34]<dj9cxzysv>it always is on a fresh install
[14:34]<kzzvzrys>I am confused now. do I put USE="+nls" in /etc/make.conf then I emerge userlocales unicode then emerge -uND world or USE="unicode nptl nptlonly nls userlocales" then I emerge userlocales unicode then emerge -uND world?
[14:35]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: that bunch of words i gave you are all useflags
[14:35]<dj9cxzysv>hey ElPenguin I'm trying out your suggestion for opening a second terminal
[14:35]<rfprrruyr>DJ4Christ: woo, infectiously good :)
[14:35]<vdg2jd>hi
[14:35]<2ggaz_>whats this package "sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r7" its the biggest on my list at 40mb
[14:35]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: new kernel
[14:35]<vdg2jd>after i do a "make install", do i need to edit my menu.lst?
[14:35]<dj9cxzysv>getting 336 kb/s down for the files
[14:35]<kzzvzrys>"unicode nptl nptlonly nls userlocales" <--- these are useflags? then what do I need to emerge ?
[14:36]<rfprrruyr>vinboy: you should do it manually, i can't stand that make install script
[14:36]<rfprrruyr>vinboy: but no
[14:36]<2ggaz_>ElPenguin: will getting a new kernel go back to some kinda default settings, and get rid eof modules ive added ot my current one?
[14:37]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: you'll have to recompile it
[14:37]<zxyrrg>alright now i've had it, there must be a better configuration possible for this nv gforce FX5200 card i can see the refreshrate and it says its 75hz
[14:37]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: i always compile it monolithically anyway
[14:37]<2ggaz_>man this is a lot of headake, all i wnated was to get sound working on my system
[14:37]<nwlznssj>hi all, can i use su without entering a password? or pass the password on cli? i'd create an alias if i coudl
[14:37]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: make sure you compile alsa into the kernel then, and your audio card drivers
[14:37]<rfprrruyr>expresso: you can use sudo...
[14:38]<dj9cxzysv>and he could add symlink to his USE ElPenguin
[14:38]<rfprrruyr>DJ4Christ: eh
[14:38]<kzzvzrys>ElPenguin: "unicode nptl nptlonly nls userlocales" <--- if these are useflags then what do I need to emerge ?
[14:38]<2ggaz_>yeah ive done that, and i just emerged arts and esound and added arts, esd and alsa to global use flags, whats why i was gonna use emerge world, someone said i needed to make sound work in my current apps
[14:39]<rfprrruyr>kartagis all the software you need to support it. that includes things like x. i recommend you emerge -uDvNa system first though
[14:39]<rfprrruyr>Kartagis: but i hope you're prepared in case it breaks gcc
[14:39]<rrxjjv>benjr_: why both arts and esd?
[14:39]<b-mygus>hey all
[14:39]<b-mygus>is there some tool in gentoo to scan for wireless networks ?
[14:39]<kzzvzrys>expresso you could add your nick in /etc/sudoers
[14:39]<nwlznssj>ElPenguin: i don't have autho to change sudo stuff
[14:39]<rrxjjv>benjr_: alsa's dmix isn't ehough?
[14:39]<nwlznssj>I don't have root on the box.
[14:39]<nwlznssj>_yet_ :)
[14:40]<2ggaz_>cahoot: it want letting me have sound in 2 apps at once
[14:40]<rrxjjv>benjr_: alsa's dmix isn't ehough?
[14:40]<rfprrruyr>expresso: if you don't have root, how are you going to change su settings? o_O
[14:40]<rrxjjv>benjr_: what card? what apps?
[14:40]<mnvrpxrnn>B-Minus, join #wifi-wiz
[14:41]<nwlznssj>i can't ElPenguin , i just want to put the password somewhere i don't have to enter it, alias perhaps?
[14:41]<2ggaz_>cahoot: xmms uses alsa i knwo that for sure cose it says so
[14:41]<rfprrruyr>benjr_: that's called mixing. you need to compile in support and only use 1 sound daemon
[14:41]<nwlznssj>ElPenguin: we have a shared account by us devs that we su to to deploy and such. entering the password is cumbersome.
[14:41]<rrxjjv>ElPenguin: dmix can be enough
[14:41]<dycnzzvxuz>does anyone know how to connect a sony memory stick to linux?
[14:41]<2ggaz_>cahoot: but if xmms is runngin i cant get sound with stuff runnig i wine, or in flash files etc
[14:41]<rfprrruyr>expresso: then an alias is your only option
[14:42]<nwlznssj>how would that work ElPenguin ?
[14:42]<rfprrruyr>cahoot: it works better in-kernel
[14:42]<rrxjjv>benjr_: ok those apps are not alsa aware
[14:42]<mnvrpxrnn>B-Minus, type /join #wifi-wiz
[14:42]<rfprrruyr>expresso: not my area of expertise
[14:42]<2ggaz_>cahoot: so adding esd and arts then re-emreging them will fix it?
[14:42]<rrxjjv>benjr_: wine I don't know much about, flash should be able to use aoss
[14:43]<nwlznssj>anyone else perpahs? how could i creaet an alias which contains su -l sharedusername <password>? i don't want to enter the password anymore
[14:43]<rfprrruyr>cahoot: wine by default puts out through the alsa mixer ,iirc
[14:43]<rrxjjv>benjr_: is this a laptop?
[14:44]<rfprrruyr>cahoot: but it is configurable, that i know
[14:44]<nwlznssj>storing it in my .bashrc seems good enough. everyone has the password. noone really uses their own account for anything, but the shared account doesn't have ssha ccess.
