[03:51]<zunnpnpzd> HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted I get this error
[03:51]<sydcyg>spootnick: does this raid controler have on board cache?
[03:51]<sljjvgyac>Simkin: not sure of that. why?
[03:51]<sydcyg>spootnick: if not, you might be better off using software raid. I've actually found that i trust software raid a lot more than low end hardware raid solutions.
[03:51]<dzzzz>Triffid_Hunter: what do you get from 'grep ttyS /proc/devices' ??
[03:52]<gzwdfwg>heya :P
[03:52]<vzyppym_hugvnz>yaaar: "4 ttyS"
[03:52]<sydcyg>spootnick: if the raid controler had onboard cache it'd be a big speed boost over software raid. if not there is a very low speed increase over software raid (at least for raid 1)
[03:52]<gzwdfwg>how 2 type ALT characters on a linux console? withoug copying from somewhere else? :X
[03:53]<sljjvgyac>Simkin: i started setting up software raid. i stopped when i tried to set up lilo via raid, and i found out it's not as easy as I expected
[03:53]<zzvxuz>hi all, does anyone know how can i NOT have to emerge xf86-video-intel?
[03:53]<sydcyg>spootnick: i could help you with that or give you a sample config file (or both)
[03:53]<zsuszgzvjz>by not having it inyour video cards variable ?:P
[03:54]<sljjvgyac>Simkin: for lilo/raid?
[03:54]<sydcyg>yup
[03:54]<sydcyg>it's quite straight forward actually.
[03:54]<dzzzz>Triffid_Hunter: cool
[03:55]<sydcyg>spootnick: although, i wouldn't even attempt it with grub
[03:55]<sydcyg>grub + software raid is no fun :)
[03:55]<sljjvgyac>Simkin: grub is too complex for my liking. i'd rather stay away of it
[03:56]<sljjvgyac>well, ok. i googled some stuff on lilo/raid. i'll give them a shot. if i don't manage to do it, i'll come back and ask for your example the
[03:56]<sljjvgyac>then*
[03:56]<sljjvgyac>tks
[03:56]<sydcyg>ok!
[03:56]<sydcyg>if i'm gone i'll be back in the morning (8am pst)
[03:56]<vvdw>hey, i just wrote a brand new C/R spam e-mail filter mostly from scratch. if there is anyone who would like to be kind enough to help me test it (just involves sending an e-mail) please let me know.
[03:56]<sydcyg>need your email address
[03:57]<zunnpnpzd>any idea why I get HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted when trying to set my dvd-rw drive to DMA?
[03:57]<sydcyg>guzzlefry: most likely you don't have the right ide controler loaded.
[03:57]<zunnpnpzd>Simkin: how do I find out if I am?
[03:58]<sydcyg>start with lspci
[03:58]<sydcyg>and pastebin it
[03:59]<zunnpnpzd>Simkin: http://pastebin.com/736256
[04:00]<sydcyg>guzzlefry: what device is your dvd play? (/dev/hda hdb etc)
[04:00]<syddnee>how do i get /etc/init.d/clock to work - it refuses to work on boot and i have had to put in exit 0 lines to bypass it
[04:00]<zunnpnpzd>simkin: /dev/hda
[04:02]<sydcyg>guzzlefry: now go do a make menuconfig on your kernel
[04:03]<zunnpnpzd>Simkin: can I use genkernel --menuconfig all instead?
[04:03]<sydcyg>i never used genkernel
[04:03]<sydcyg>so i don't know
[04:03]<zunnpnpzd>gives the same menu as the kernel I believe
[04:03]<zunnpnpzd>what should I do after make menuconfig?
[04:04]<sydcyg>device drivers
[04:04]<sydcyg>ide/ata controlers
[04:04]<sydcyg>and turn on the ali whatever driver
[04:04]<sydcyg>if you're using genkernel my guess is it's already compiled but for some reason the module is not loaded.
[04:05]<dzzzz>Triffid_Hunter: do you get anything from 'grep serial /proc/interrupts' (maybe only will when your serial port is in use?)
[04:05]<zunnpnpzd>should I try builtin instead of module?
[04:05]<sydcyg>anyone know if you can use distcc across multiple architectures? like amd + intel + ppc ?
[04:05]<sydcyg>or just amd + intel ?
[04:05]<vzyppym_hugvnz>yaaar: says nothing
[04:05]<sydcyg>guzzlefry: yes! worth a try.
[04:05]<zunnpnpzd>ok, thanks very much Simkin
[04:05]<sydcyg>guzzlefry: or try to load the module, but i dunno what it would be called
[04:05]<dzzzz>Triffid_Hunter: and your serial port works?
[04:06]<dzzzz>or rather, is doing stuff?
[04:06]<sydcyg>guzzlefry: before compiling try modprobe alim15x3 ?
[04:07]<vzyppym_hugvnz>yaaar: 3: 3 XT-PIC serial
[04:07]<zznd_wjpp>is there any reason Portage won't respect package.mask?
[04:07]<dzzzz>hrm
[04:07]<sljjvgyac>Simkin: it's an adaptec controller. do i need a particular kernel module other than dm-* for it?
[04:07]<zunnpnpzd>simkin: it was already loaded
[04:07]<vzyppym_hugvnz>grey_wolf: bad syntax or in the wrong place usually
[04:08]<zznd_wjpp>Triffid_Hunter: i've double- and triple-checked it. it works on one package, but not another
[04:08]<avzndu>Oktane, so i just ran make oldconfig, and a bunch of what seem like default options went by, but i see many that i want to change
[04:08]<avzndu>is there something i need to do before i do make modules...
[04:08]<zznd_wjpp>>=app-emulation/wine-20000101 #works
[04:08]<zznd_wjpp>>=media-libs/openal-20000101 #doesn't
[04:09]<sydcyg>spootnick: in kernel config under scsi-low level drivers there is adaptec aacraid support. and i2o raid. I beleive you need one or the other.
[04:10]<jgn_znm_ndn>what linux app can I use to animate gif's ?
[04:10]<sydcyg>one_red_eye: gimp would probably be the most popular option
[04:11]<zznd_wjpp>one_red_eye: GraphicsMagick, ImageMagick, and i think freej support it
[04:11]<jgn_znm_ndn>cool, thanks
[04:12]<vwysvgm_jgg>Xine has suddenly stopped playing XVID encoded video files. When I try and play a XVID encoded file, it tells me that it is an unsupported codec (it acknowledges it as an XVID file). I have been using XINE for years to play these files so I do not know what caused this change. Does anyone know how to re-enable XVID support? I have checked and there is not a USE flag for xine and XVID
[04:15]<zznd_wjpp>Triffid_Hunter: http://rafb.net/paste/results/NG4rfL96.html
[04:15]<gyws>Is there some way to convert ISO-8859-15 filenames to UTF-8 ones?
[04:16]<vzyppym_hugvnz>grey_wolf: what happens if you put openal above wine in .mask?
[04:17]<zznd_wjpp>Triffid_Hunter: no change
[04:18]<rrrurf>I am trying to change the root password on the livecd, but I get "passwd: Authentication token manipulation error" any suggestion
[10:25]<mjcvjznrs>morning to all
[10:25]<svjzddjzz>qweqweqwe_: add the following line to /etc/conf.d/net config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
[10:26]<grgj2rgsxnn>qweqweqwe_: likely. mine has two lines. echo 'iface_eth0="dhcp"' >> /etc/conf.d/net'
[10:26]<svjzddjzz>I found transparent terminals over web browsers usefull for entering code and info from a web page
[10:26]<hrednrg__>nanobanshee: how can i boot w/o bootloader and a kernel installed?
[10:26]<grgj2rgsxnn>qweqweqwe_: and echo 'dhcpcd_eth0="-YNR"' >> /etc/conf.d/net
[10:27]<grgj2rgsxnn>qweqweqwe_: then /etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart
[10:27]<grgj2rgsxnn>HazyNRG__: you will also need to install grub.
[10:27]<fudygjsj>nanobanshee, -YNR for what?
[10:27]<v1vv0z>stormmorr, yes
[10:28]<hrednrg__>nanobanshee: ok, thanks :)
[10:28]<grgj2rgsxnn>luminoso: man dhcpcd. to preserve my precious conf files.
[10:28]<fudygjsj>ok. thanks!
[10:29]<grgj2rgsxnn>qweqweqwe_: less /etc/conf.d/net.example
[10:29]<v1vv0z>just don't use drop shadow's + fading and transpareny unless you have a fast comp and graphics card
[10:29]<v1vv0z>but suprisingly works very nicely with latest xorg 7.1 and i810-1.6 and latest mesa
[10:30]<v1vv0z>you just can't make opengl stuff transparent
[10:31]<grgj2rgsxnn>t35t0r: even with xcompmgr and transset? are you sure?
[10:31]<vj2djjw>hmm i issued 'emerge kde-meta' or meta-kde or w/e, and its still compiling. its been over 5 hours so far XD
[10:31]<sarrnfy>Is it possible that when I run "make menuconfig" I see the screen with all aaaaaaaabbbbbbbceeseeeee and obviously the menu content?
