[10:31]<svuup>kde is HUUUGE
[10:31]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: font problem.
[10:32]<sarrnfy>I see. This is a fresh new install. So, do i have to emerge fonts before kernel? Which fonts?
[10:32]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, heh you gotta be over here to see this ..
[10:32]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: xterm -fn 9x15 -e make menuconfig
[10:32]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, if you use dropshadows it makes it a little bit slow
[10:33]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, xcompmgr -cfF is a little bit slow
[10:33]<v1vv0z>xcompmgr -c or xcompmgr -fF is fine
[10:33]<grgj2rgsxnn>t35t0r: dude, that mesa + xcompmgr is not the zen way. you need hardware accel. get dri working.
[10:33]<svjzddjzz>How to get wlan0 to load at boot, it gets as far as dhcp then fails stating wlan0 does not exist
[10:33]<sarrnfy>I do not have xterm. what does gentoo live cd offers, during install?
[10:33]<frsvgjmn>i was afk. does anyone know how to set fluxbox as my default wm in xdm?
[10:34]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: yikes! maybe rxvt then. rxvt -fn 9x15 -e make menuconfig
[10:34]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, HAHAH i've put that stupid rumor to rest
[10:34]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, i have full DRI on i810 (i855gm graphics)
[10:35]<grgj2rgsxnn>t35t0r: of course. I have DRI on my ibook and linux runs on toasters. it was mesa that I have problems with. software emul is ghetto.
[10:35]<2nu>zomg, toaster!!
[10:35]<v1vv0z>OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 852GM/855GM 20050225 x86/MMX/SSE2
[10:35]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, it's not software emul
[10:35]<grgj2rgsxnn>t35t0r: ah. with the DRI backend. all good then.
[10:35]<sarrnfy>nanobanshee: I do not follow you. What is rxvt or xterm?
[10:35]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, hehe didn't i just say i have full DRI?
[10:36]<grgj2rgsxnn>t35t0r: terminals. like gnome-terminal.
[10:36]<svjzddjzz>SAngeli: why not emerge aterm
[10:36]<v1vv0z>nanobanshee, yes that's what i'm using gnome-terminal
[10:36]<v1vv0z>9489 root 15 0 313m 104m 6852 S 2.0 14.5 6:00.34 X
[10:36]<v1vv0z>2.0 cpu 14.5 memory
[10:36]<grgj2rgsxnn>whoops! I mean for SAngeli. xterm and rxvt are terminals.
[10:36]<v1vv0z>1.3 ghz celeron m, 768mb ram
[10:36]<sarrnfy>nanobanshee: I do not have any gui interface yet. I am just after stage 3
[10:37]<v1vv0z>it goes up a little bit if you move around transparent windows but goes back down to that if you're not doing anything or just typin
[10:38]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: oh boy. /exec -o echo $TERM
[10:39]<sarrnfy>nanobanshee: thanks
[10:39]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: you might be able to fix the problem by using the TERM variable to have it use a different termcap. maybe.
[10:39]<svjzddjzz> How to get wlan0 to load at boot, it gets as far as dhcp then fails stating wlan0 does not exist
[10:39]<sarrnfy>what is an alternative to menuconfig?
[10:39]<irdevxjs>yahoo!
[10:40]<irdevxjs>now that I've broken sound in Kopete
[10:40]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: vi /usr/src/linux/.config
[10:40]<irdevxjs>sound in flash works
[10:40]<sarrnfy>graphical config
[10:40]<sarrnfy>I forgot the name of it.
[10:40]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: umm. make xconfig I think.
[10:40]<svuup>gconfig
[10:40]<sarrnfy>is it perhaps gconfig?
[10:41]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: try it. worst that happens is "no rule to make target"
[10:41]<s0ufsfrac>nice, I didn't know there was a gtk config thingy for the kernel
[10:41]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: maybe kconfig. xconfig. gconfig. try them all. I forget which work.
[10:43]<grgj2rgsxnn>IamEthos: my way is to go alsa only in the kernel and then alsa-oss and aoss for OSS apps.
[10:43]<grgj2rgsxnn>IamEthos: so that you avoid breaking and fixing sound like you are doing to make individual apps work.
[10:44]<aacn__>Hey, i have the minimal install cd. and my wifi netgearcard WG511T. And i wouldwant to do get connected when i have booted up from my liveminicd. the descriptions i found on how to install the card was by adding to the kernel. And i cant do that while booted from the live cd, can i? so how should i do to get conneced?
[10:44]<sarrnfy>nanobanshee: yes, it is xconfig but I get the error "qconf: cannot connect to X server make[1]: *** [xconfig] Error 1" Any advice of what I might be missing?
[10:44]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: you are in console now, right? no graphical environment?
[10:45]<sarrnfy>right
[10:45]<sarrnfy>ha, I see
[10:45]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: yup.
[10:45]<sarrnfy>it only works if you already have a graphical environment
[10:46]<v1vv0z>ohh fun i'm going to have to rebuild my entire system with gcc 3.4 !!!
[10:46]<grgj2rgsxnn>Acke__: use another livecd from another distro to install gentoo. gentoo has limited wireless support.
[10:46]<sarrnfy>but, as I am installing gentoo remotely, I have from my current gentoo PC a terminal session (ssh). Can I still get it done this way or xconfig must have a gui env on the same pc I am executing xconfig?
[10:46]<grgj2rgsxnn>Acke__: lemme get the link to the good wifi livecd. hold on ....
[10:46]<zz2yvnz_mnv>the obvious answer is to use "make menuconfig"
[10:47]<tnndu_c>the oblivion answer is ;>
[10:47]<v1vv0z>oh well it was bound to happen eventually
[10:47]<sarrnfy>I see
[10:47]<sarrnfy>so I have to solve my font issue, then,. which I am not able to
[10:48]<sarrnfy>bty, is xconfig reliable or is it still better to use menuconfig?
[10:48]<grgj2rgsxnn>Acke__: got it. whax, whoppix, or backtrack
[10:48]<v1vv0z>so does the gcc 3.4 abi do just that? that is support the promise that a compiled object file will be portable; no recompilation will be required to move to any supported platform.
[10:49]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: at the boot prompt, try boot: gentoo nofb
[10:49]<mzzcfnss>Hey, if I'm getting "input output error" when chrooting to a dynamically linked /bin/bash but not when I try chrooting to a statically linked shell, eg. busybox sh, what would you think was wrong? I need a working chroot so that I may recompile my stuff, yet it keeps failing on everything not statically linked with the same error :(
[10:49]<sarrnfy>ok will do
[10:49]<sarrnfy>thanks
[10:49]<sarrnfy>clear
[10:49]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: no promises. just try it.
[10:50]<grgj2rgsxnn>darkless: /lib is not mounted.
[10:50]<sarrnfy>is it still possible to do this: I cp the .config file into my pc, locally run xconfig save it and dump .config file into the pc. can I do so?
[10:51]<ducfzzn>chaosite: it only works for the time given in sleep, after that it'll go back to normal.
[10:51]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: good idea. do it. make sure the kernel versions are the same.
[10:51]<aacn__>nanobanshee, ty man, goona look at em. I was dl knoppix but it takes forever. so i cut it and started dl the livecd (not miimal vs) of gentoo. do you think the livecd. will lack what i need to config the card, and that it is better to get the other once you mentioned?
[10:51]<sarrnfy>ok
[10:52]<mzzcfnss>nanobanshee: actually it is, but... I just spotted klibc having a really weird name inside my /lib... that just might be the culprit... I'll see if I can work it out, thanks
[10:53]<grgj2rgsxnn>Acke__: gentoo will likely not work. I am not sure which livecd is best, but poke around a bit on google and try to find a good one. I use wired to install gentoo and worry about wifi later. but that might not be possible for you.
[10:54]<aacn__>nanobanshee, well thanks.
[10:55]<grgj2rgsxnn>the best way to config gentoo is to cheat cheat cheat. steal kernel configs, xorg.conf and wifi configs from working livecds.
[10:55]<fuzyjusrnjzrn>how come the livecd assigns eth1 to my ethernet controller?
[10:55]<sarrnfy>to make sure I do not screwup, how do I run xconfig without damaging my current .config? Do I still have to run xconfig from /use/src/linux? I have my cp file located in /home/temp/config
[10:56]<v1vv0z>do openoffice-bin and firefox-bin work on a gcc-4.1 or gcc-3.4 system?
[10:56]<2frx2frx2frx>how many network cards do you have? Wireless cards can show up as eth interfaces too
[10:56]<fuzyjusrnjzrn>blahblahblah: just this one
[10:56]<sarrnfy>Do I rely on open and save as from xconfig menu?
[10:56]<fuzyjusrnjzrn>lscpi says i only got 1 too
[10:56]<fuzyjusrnjzrn>there is no eth0 when i cat /proc/interrupts
[10:56]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: no way. cp the .config to a safe place.
[10:56]<fwnfwnfwn_>excellent network is working. i had to use the live cd to emerge dhcp (mount, chroot again!) but now all good.
[10:57]<sarrnfy>nanobanshee: then? how to run xconfig?
[10:57]<fwnfwnfwn_>how do i get services to start at boot? (notably ssh for now)
[10:57]<grgj2rgsxnn>SAngeli: just run it. it will save the new one to .config, which you move to the other box.
[10:58]<mzzcfnss>nanobanshee: ok, I've found the error. I have had several critical library files zero-sized after a recent file-system corruption (the reason why I need to get in there and recompile from scratch)
