[17:00]<nxnnnnnj>uskie: emerge portage wants to get, for example, x11-terms/xterm, and emerge x11-xterms/xterm wants to get portage.
[17:00]<mrsrvysvr>charzero, check your /var/lib/portage/world
[17:01]<rmrmyj>lehmann: what
[17:01]<rmrmyj>lehmann: what's your processor?
[17:01]<fgxdrgg>no, i have only single cpu
[17:01]<fgxdrgg>an old p4
[17:01]<rmrmyj>it's a strange error, I don't know what can cause it
[17:01]<nxnnnnnj>MasaVista: sys-apps/portage is not in there. how is that possible?
[17:01]<fgxdrgg>ok, thanks anyway
[17:02]<mrsrvysvr>charzero, i don't have it either
[17:02]<rmrmyj>oh, p4 has hyperthreading, maybe it's related to that? I don't know.
[17:02]<wq>sys-apps/portage is in system not world
[17:02]<wq>no ? :p
[17:02]<mrsrvysvr>yep
[17:02]<ma2gggyg>amadio: sorry for bugging again, im not understanding this README file. this is for a Dell laptop. USA, I want normal font. Should I use the ter-112n?
[17:03]<mzzvxljzm>uskie, neeko, amadio, fken - hi guys..i finish compiling samba..how can i get the file on a windows share?thanks
[17:04]<rmrmyj>djbeenie: I think it should be alright, you may just want to tweak the size
[17:04]<ma2gggyg>cool thanks
[17:04]<sffr9vw>whats a good way to see realtime disk statistics?
[17:05]<nxnnnnnj>x2: why on earth then would `emerge portage` want to isntall xterm?
[17:05]<nxnnnnnj>x2: and why would it be N, not U ?
[17:05]<rmrmyj>Spla4t1: gkrellm? conky? or some other sys monitor
[17:05]<rmrmyj>Spla4t1: is it what you need?
[17:05]<tfkdfn>charzero: probably some strange dep path, emerge -pvt portage to locate whats deping on it
[17:06]<sffr9vw>Im trying to see what % of my disk IO i am using on a server
[17:06]<rggjgg>charzero: sure you called `emerge portage`, not `emerge -u portage` or `emerge -uD portage`?
[17:07]<sffr9vw>I have a vmware server w/ 60 users on two mirrored sata disks and Im trying to see if the disks are maxed out.
[17:07]<yzvzzzyz>can open office view pdf files?
[17:07]<rmrmyj>Spla4t1: then I dont know, if you discover, I also would like to know
[17:08]<sffr9vw>I though maby "vmstat -d" but the results are all over the place.
[17:09]<tfkdfn>I don't suppose anyone knows when vmware plan on releasing a version of workstation that doesn't suck with recent gtk's? :)
[17:09]<mrrvx>hello :) I am trying to install postgresql 8.1.x and I'm following the wiki: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Configure_Postgresql - I've added the two lines to package.keywords but when I try to emerge it wants to install the stable 8.0.4 why?
[17:09]<mzcxzgmzz>TFKyle: Maybe go ask vmware.
[17:10]<ma2gggyg>amadio: haha failed to set user font
[17:10]<nxnnnnnj>TFKyle: emerge -pvt gets this: http://pastebin.com/737091
[17:10]<rmrmyj>djbeenie: can you post the error message?
[17:11]<nxnnnnnj>TFKyle: `emerge -pvt sys-apps/portage` that is.
[17:11]<tfkdfn>charzero: ok, looks like that doesn't help
[17:11]<ma2gggyg>amadio: that was the exact error message
[17:11]<nxnnnnnj>TFKyle: Am I correct that I should see 'U's, not 'N's ?
[17:11]<wotah>anyone here installed cacti recently? -- i need a bit of help on the use flags for it
[17:12]<tfkdfn>charzero: dev-java/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03 +X +alsa -browserplugin -doc -mozilla -nsplugin 33,570 kB <-- that might be it, let me check blackdowns deps for +X
[17:12]<ma2gggyg>amadio: i did a etc-update and that fixed the problem...the font is big
[17:12]<rmrmyj>does it have some caps word starting with K? (the err mesg)
[17:13]<ywcsn>sorry, whats the difference btw blackdown-jdk and sun-jdk?
[17:13]<rmrmyj>djbeenie: oh, fine
[17:13]<ma2gggyg>amadio: now how do I get the smaller size
[17:13]<ma2gggyg>amadio: haha sorry I am learning this, I appreciate your help
[17:13]<rmrmyj>just list the /usr/share/consolefont and grep for ter- than see the available sizes...
[17:14]<rmrmyj>djbeenie: don't worry
[17:14]<nxnnnnnj>TFKyle: I set USE=-java, which took blackdown out of this list, and it still things it should install many new packages.
[17:14]<rmrmyj>charzero: USE=-* helps?
[17:14]<ma-pu>rofl :p
[17:15]<nxnnnnnj>amadio: nope.
[17:15]<rmrmyj>charzero: maybe the python dep is bringing X with it?
[17:16]<nxnnnnnj>amadio: Even if it is, why am I seeing 'N' instead of 'U' ?
[17:16]<rmrmyj>charzero: yeah, that's weird
[17:16]<tfkdfn>charzero: if you're only seeing that when you do a -pvt thats normal I think
[17:16]<mzcxzgmzz>charzero: Maybe put -X in make.conf, if you don't want it?
[17:17]<nxnnnnnj>TFKyle: I see 'N' instad of 'U' even with `emerge portage -p`
[17:17]<rmrmyj>TFKyle: I think it would show U's even with pvt
[17:17]<tfkdfn>and yeah, its probably python (since python deps on tk if you have +X, and that probably deps on a lot of other things)
[17:17]<rggjgg>charzero: you didn't maybe delete /var by chance?
[17:17]<nxnnnnnj>genone: I have /var/lib/portage/world
[17:17]<2ajzgx->Hi. I've got a question. I've setup a box with network bridging between two interfaces. but how do I, with IPtables, deny all traffic on a certain port, between the interfaces?
[17:17]<tfkdfn>charzero: strange, are you just bootstrapping the system?
[17:18]<rggjgg>charzero: doesn't matter, the important thing is stuff inside /var/db/pkg
[17:18]<nxnnnnnj>TFKyle: Nope. I've been using this install for a month. I just did `emerge --sync` and now its like this.
[17:18]<nxnnnnnj>genone: /var/db/pkg is empty
[17:18]<rggjgg>charzero: then you're screwed
[17:18]<nxnnnnnj>genone: where did it go? no way to rebuild it?
[17:18]<tfkdfn>that would be why it shows everything as not merged then
[17:19]<rggjgg>charzero: you deleted it? no way I can tell you. And no, no way to rebuild it other then remerging everything
[17:20]<nxnnnnnj>genone: hmm. i didn't delete it. `emerge world` should fix it then?
[17:21]<zzyvxslxnzn>anyone here what to emerge to a small Gnome install?
[17:22]<rggjgg>charzero: no. The best you can try is `emerge $(< /var/lib/portage/world)`, but there is no way to really fix this situation, you will have quite a few orphaned files.
[17:22]<nxnnnnnj>genone: in that case, i'm going back to debian. thank you for your help/diagnosis though.
[17:23]<rmrmyj>emerge -e world?
[17:23]<rggjgg>amadio: won't work
[17:23]<mzcxzgmzz>charzero: Does /var/lib/portage/world exist? Maybe that's gone too.
[17:24]<nxnnnnnj>DrChandra: I have that file.
[17:24]<nxnnnnnj>DrChandra: And it appears to be correct.
[17:24]<zzyvxslxnzn>anyone here able to help me out?
[17:24]<rggjgg>raithsphere: emerge gnome-light
[17:24]<mzcxzgmzz>charzero: OK, that's one reliable breadcrumb on the trail back.
[17:24]<zzyvxslxnzn>thank you
[17:25]<rmrmyj>raithsphere: maybe gnome-(lite|light)
[17:25]<rmrmyj>yes gnome-light
[17:25]<agjg0wo9>I installed gentoo 2006.0 stage3, grub, made the kernel configuration, but when it loads the kernel image it halts at this point: kernel /kernel-2.6.16-r7 root=/dev/sda5 \ [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0x1cd731].. any sugestion?
[17:25]<nxnnnnnj>DrChandra: Nah. I've had too many problems with Gentoo. I'm done for now.
