[22:27]<dda696>well, I ran memtest86, and it turns out my ram is screwed. how do I tell what speed I need? my manual only specifies 168-pin DDR SDRAM
[22:27]<mzcxzgmzz>fatpelt: Might mix Mueller's problem too.
[22:27]<mzcxzgmzz>fix, rather
[22:28]<sdfvrgvxys>but how do i use dhcp, with an ip adress i want to set?
[22:28]<mcy>sylvanthis, dhcpcd -S the_ip_i_want
[22:28]<sdfvrgvxys>ok
[22:28]<sdfvrgvxys>but in the net file?
[22:28]<sdfvrgvxys>because im kinda to lazy for a command after every boot
[22:29]<mcy>sylvanthis, mm... dhcpcd_eth0="-S ip"
[22:29]<2yjmrg>yyc747: look in the bios?
[22:29]<sdfvrgvxys>ahh ok ty ^^
[22:29]<mcy>np
[22:30]<dda696>biodan: thanks, I will take a look
[22:30]<sdfvrgvxys>can i also define a netmask and broadcast?
[22:31]<wjzcrlxj2yr>Will the imminent unmasking of gcc4.1 make a difference if I just ignore the mask now and emerge it today? I'm about to do a fresh install.
[22:31]<weersc>Workaphobia, You want to build the whole system with 4.1?
[22:31]<wjzcrlxj2yr>that is, does the unmasking do nothing besides take down yellow caution tape, or is the install actually affected?
[22:32]<wjzcrlxj2yr>yeah, if that's not a bad idea
[22:32]<weersc>Workaphobia, It is.
[22:32]<mcy>sylvanthis, i dont think you can with dhcpcd
[22:32]<sdfvrgvxys>ok
[22:32]<mzcxzgmzz>Workaphobia: Chances are there would not be much change between today and when they unmask it. Worst case is a little instability now, and another compile when it's finalized.
[22:32]<wjzcrlxj2yr>wrzask: Er, why?
[22:32]<sdfvrgvxys>i ll go check it out ty a lot
[22:32]<weersc>4.1 hasn't gone through much testing.
[22:32]<weersc>I thing 3.4.6 is the best option.
[22:32]<ryaxg>when trying to merge Rhythmbox 0.9.2 (~x86), I get an access violation reported by Portage. it says that the package tried to "mkdir /root/.gconf /root/.gconfd; open_wr /root/.gconfd/saved_state" and other similar junk. does anyone have any idea as to why it wants to mess with those locations? should I just try to merge the very latest version instead?
[22:32]<aacn__>Hey, what i configure with iwconfig and ifconfig, where is that stored?
[22:33]<mcy>sylvanthis, oh, and.. its -s not -S... cant remember what i've said
[22:33]<tfkdfn>wrzask: 4.1 is fairly well-tested imo, enough that it should be going into unstable soon enough
[22:33]<wjzcrlxj2yr>DrChandra: Thanks; wrzask: the newsletter said it was pretty stable.. Are you sure it's trouble, becuase I was looking forward to having a faster compiler
[22:34]<weersc>Workaphobia, You may call me simpli conservative.
[22:34]<weersc>s/simpli/simply/
[22:34]<mzcxzgmzz>Workaphobia: A major gcc upgrade can be a lot of work. 3.3 to 3.4 was a few hours of work, and days of recompiling. Dunno was 4.1 wants.
[22:34]<tfkdfn>wrzask: I've probably built most of my system with 4.0/4.1, and hardly anything has broeken yet because of it (that I couldn't fix anyway)
[22:35]<tfkdfn>*broken
[22:35]<srmnm>For some reason I can't do things on Gentoo that I could do on my Windows OS, does this mean that Gentoo is worse at optimizing the usage of hardware available?
[22:35]<weersc>DrChandra, There are no application ABI changes due to going beyond 3.4, so that won't be necessary.
[22:35]<mzcxzgmzz>Workaphobia: I'm going to wait for 4.1 to become more stable. I have enough to do, but if you have a scratch box to throw at it, by all means learn.
[22:35]<wjzcrlxj2yr>TFKyle: that's good to hear. What kind of stuff did break and was fixable?
[22:35]<mzcxzgmzz>wrzask: So the gcc upgrade guide will not happen this time?
[22:35]<weersc>TFKyle, Do your deeds. ;)
[22:36]<weersc>DrChandra, AFAIK not.
[22:36]<wjzcrlxj2yr>DrChandra: Meh, not so much a scatch box as the one I'm using right now. If it turns out it's unstable or unusable within the first couple of days, I still have time to do a reinstall again
[22:36]<tfkdfn>Workaphobia: well, back in the early days of gcc-4.0 a lot of stuff wouldn't build because of it (but most of the issues were just missing class defs, just had to #include another header in one of the files or declare classes in advance)
[22:37]<weersc>What's the real point after 4.1 anyway? Raw speed?
[22:37]<mzcxzgmzz>wrzask: More compile options having to do with rice.
[22:37]<tfkdfn>wrzask: a newer codebase, thats atleast a bit cleaner
[22:37]<srmnm>For some reason I can't do things on Gentoo that I could do on my Windows OS, does this mean that Gentoo is worse at optimizing the usage of hardware available? For example, if I open a page that has a lot of image content like www.worldofwarcraft.com EVERYTHING else is slowed down. Or when I open Limewire, the same thing happens. What is this?
[22:37]<wjzcrlxj2yr>TFKyle: So you just got your hands slightly dirty by fixing the downloaded source?
[22:37]<wjzcrlxj2yr>sayed: What browser?
[22:37]<tfkdfn>Workaphobia: either that or using cvs, or backporting patches from cvs
[22:38]<tfkdfn>no need to duplicate work :)
[22:38]<srmnm>workaphobia Mozilla-Fireforx-bin
[22:38]<wjzcrlxj2yr>TFKyle: As long as it's not a major pain I'd like to use it
[22:39]<tfkdfn>Workaphobia: I don't think gcc 4.1 will be a pain nowadays, thought you might want to wait for it to be unmasked just incase some sort of showstopper comes up
[22:39]<wjzcrlxj2yr>sayed: I sometimes experience slowdowns loading a page in konqueror. Although it's really just konqueror that stalls for a few seconds; the rest of the computer, and window manager is fine
[22:39]<vxnxryfj>ah well damnit
[22:39]<tfkdfn>*though rather
[22:39]<vxnxryfj>just heard word from Creative that the X-Fi drivers won't be out till Q1/Q2 2007, anyone remember the initial release date?
[22:39]<vxnxryfj>(of the X-Fi's)
[22:39]<srmnm>Workaphobia Why would it do that? I got Linux for my system to be better.
[22:40]<wjzcrlxj2yr>TFKyle: If that showstopper happens, I'll wipe again and use the 3.4 version instead.. So I guess I'll start soon isntead of waiting for the unmask
[22:40]<zdzddcnd>where is tarball uri located
[22:40]<wjzcrlxj2yr>sayed: I just mean that in my case linux doesn't slow down; not even KDE, it's just konqueror that was a little lousy at loading stuff. I don't know how much would apply to your case
[22:40]<ryaxg>sayed, try a different browser to try and find the cause of the problem. that web site doesn't slow my system when accessed with Epiphany
[22:41]<srmnm>RichG Alright.
[22:41]<wjzcrlxj2yr>sayed: And if you are using linux so that everything will be easier than windows.. well.. be cautious about that assumption.
[22:41]<tfkdfn>Workaphobia: you might want to use 4.1.1 (its out now) if you were going to merge 4.1.0 or 4.1.1_pre
[22:41]<mzcxzgmzz>Workaphobia: Even with 3.4, the 4.1 upgrade, when the unmask happens, is reported to be painless, so starting now with either compiler choice gets useful work done.
[22:42]<gyvzrd_>can anyone help me, i want to be able to change my current resolution in gnome to < 1024x768 , but every time i try this it gives me an out of sync... my xorg.conf is at http://pastebin.com/737822
[22:42]<wjzcrlxj2yr>Ok, thanks for the info Chandra, Kyle, wrzask, etc. I guess there's no excuse for procrastinating now :)
[22:42]<sydavwjzc>yay!
[22:42]<sydavwjzc>net neutrality has been voted in, 20 to 13.
[22:42]<wjzcrlxj2yr>voted in what?
[22:43]<tfkdfn>nitram_: wow, I'm suprised your mouse works, you have no device specified
[22:43]<gyvzrd_>TFKyle lol :D
[22:43]<gyvzrd_>TFKyle it does work yeah :)
[22:43]<mzcxzgmzz>Workaphobia: The UN Security Council was voting to shut down the Internet today. Didn't you hear? :)
[22:44]<tfkdfn>nitram_: dunno if it will help but you might want to get rid of the ignoreEDID stuff from the Device Section (unless you need them for some reason)
[22:44]<xrwcyrr>I'm trying to compile a package from source that needs libnet but it says "checking for libnet_build_ip in -lnet... no" although I have emerged libnet ..What should i do?
[22:44]<gyvzrd_>TFKyle i need them for my geforce 4200 go or else it will lockup on startup
[22:44]<wjzcrlxj2yr>DrChandra: They must've shut down my telepathic linkup too ;)
[22:44]<mzcxzgmzz>Workaphobia: Yeah, that was years ago.
[22:45]<gyvzrd_>TFKyle you have any idea whats wrong ?
[22:45]<burr>Im having problems playing an audio cd, not sure what to do. I dont see any tips for this on the wiki or anything. I use amarok, does anyone know how to make this work?
[22:46]<wjzcrlxj2yr>Bung: Do you have the internal connection from the cdrom drive to your sound card connecgted?
[22:46]<burr>Workaphobia: laptop, 2yrs old, no clue.
[22:46]<wjzcrlxj2yr>Bung: Many linux players, amorak included I believe, require this. Kaffeine doesn't as far as I know
[22:46]<2ajzgx->I've setup a bridged network. iptables -A FORWARD -j DROP -p tcp --dport 3724 <- shouldn't that normally block all traffic through the bridge, on the specific port?
[22:46]<tfkdfn>nitram_: not really
[22:46]<gyvzrd_>:(
[22:47]<burr>Workaphobia: would it be better to just try and rip it?
[22:47]<gxor>bjornh-: nope
[22:47]<gxor>try with ebtables
[22:47]<wjzcrlxj2yr>Bung: I prefer my music ripped to ogg. You might want to search for info on your laptop's linux sound compatibility, I guess
[22:47]<gxor>bridge works on one layer iptables on another
[22:48]<burr>Workaphobia: Roger that. Thanks for the help.
[22:48]<wjzcrlxj2yr>np
[22:48]<2ajzgx->nXOR: I see
