[00:00]<tml>notgod: He goes into NFA/DFA and non-greedy vs. backtracking in great detail. IIRC, it's around Chap. 7
[00:00]<pjffyvr>TML: Found out the guy who wrote MRE works here (or at least did not too long ago, can't remember if they said he moved on or not)
[00:00]<pyzn2rww>and i though MRE was for "meals rejected by ethiopeans" :-D
[00:00]<tml>Pollita: I think he's moved on.
[00:00]<mz_srcj>i installed PHP using YUM. before i tried to do it myself into /usr/local/php. i installed YUM after this, is it safe to delette this directory or would YUM have installed anything into there?
[00:00]<tml>Pollita: At least, I saw his name elsewhere recently.
[00:01]<tml>Pollita: I know he was working there during the writing of 2e, though.
[00:01]<tml>I assure you, if I worked with him, I'd be bugging him to have lunch with me a few times a week. :)
[00:02]<efzezz>TML: As in K&R circa 1988?
[00:02]<tml>Elazar: That would be the one
[00:03]<rjvrjm>TML: Did that K&R book once come in a brown/baige paperback? Or was it always that blue cover?
[00:03]<tml>notgod: It's always been white with blue text, but the really old copies turn brown, for some reason.
[00:03]<tml>Every 1st ed. I've ever seen has turned brown, anyway
[00:03]<drvvdaa>HIgh lignin content? <shrug>
[00:04]<tml>mattmcc: o.O
[00:04]<rjvrjm>TML: must be a different book. Waaay back when I learned C, it was in a very basic book, but it worked really well for me.
[00:04]<efzezz>TML: Now on my wish list. :) My experience is rooted in C++, I'm afraid. Never did get around to learning C.
[00:04]<efzezz>TML: Along with Pollita's book, of course. :)
[00:04]<rjvrjm>It might have been called "Programming C" or something. But it was a long time ago.
[00:04]<tml>Elazar: K&R is the best example I know of for demonstrating clarity alongside of brevity
[00:04]<drvvdaa>TML: The stuff that makes paper turn yellowish.
[00:05]<tml>mattmcc: You never cease to amaze
[00:05]<tml>Elazar: Usually, you end up getting one at the expense of the other
[00:05]<rjvrjm>I'm enjoying "PHP 5 Objects, Patterns, and Practice"
[00:05]<tml>K&R had a knack for being concise and clear at the same time that I've rarely seen duplicated.
[00:05]<drvvdaa>TML: Oh, that's nothing. You should meet my friend Erin, who describes herself as having a head full of useless knowledge.
[00:05]<efzezz>TML: Excellent combination. IIRC, I didn't hear as much of any of Stroustrup's C++-related works.
[00:05]<drvvdaa>She collects Trivial Pursuit games.
[00:05]<tml>mattmcc: heh
[00:06]<tml>Elazar: Stroustrup is a must read, but definitely not brief.
[00:06]<drvvdaa>Math & music degrees, and with them, she works a front test in a temp agency.
[00:06]<tml>mattmcc: front test?
[00:06]<drvvdaa>Um. Desk.
[00:06]<drvvdaa>Front desk.
[00:06]<tml>heh
[00:07]<rusfyvr>TML, I've installed mysql5 (that was the problem, now It finds libmysqlclient.so but it doesn't work still
[00:07]<af_nycj>notgod: do you have it on a pdf format?
[00:08]<drvvdaa>So for anyone at OSCON, you should hop across the river to the Oregon Brewers Festival.
[00:08]<haiden>mmm
[00:08]<haiden>beer
[00:08]<||aw>mmm, good beer
[00:08]<vmmwno9q>hello guys im kinda stuck on something here I got a form, and I need to query the phone number back into the boxes, but I have 3 fields 1 field contains zip code, then prefix, and suffix. Well I need the zip code to query into the zipcode box from my database, but I got the phone numbers entering in under 1 column, how could I set the values on this form to do this?
[00:08]<fxyfyf>mattmcc: you going to pdx php user group meeting?
[00:08]<haiden>i was just in boston for the american beer fest
[00:08]<drvvdaa>philip: I wasn't even aware we had a PHP user group.
[00:08]<drvvdaa>But no, probably not.. :)
[00:08]<fxyfyf>heh
[00:09]<efzezz>Having a validation issue with XMLReader and could use some advice. Info here: http://hashphp.org/pastebin.php?pid=7784
[00:09]<drvvdaa>philip: Oh yeah.. Wasn't that the thing with the pdxphp.org domain that was blank for all those years? :)
[00:09]<fxyfyf>should be interesting as all these php guys will be coming after the brewers festival... intoxicated rasmus? :)
[00:09]<rrdrdr>hehe
[00:09]<syddnee>if I have a load of checkboxes that i have named checkbox[], does php store the value for each one on submit, or only those that are checked?
[00:10]<vmmwno9q>TML: do you know how to do that?
[00:10]<rrdrdr>only checked
[00:10]<fxyfyf>the pdx php group has a booth at oscon
[00:11]<fxyfyf>from blank domain for years to booth at oscon... not bad :)
[00:11]<drvvdaa>Hmm. I wonder how much bizgres differs from postgres.
[00:12]<drvvdaa>Sorry, doing a little breadth-first browsing. phppdx -> oscon booth list -> greenplum.
[00:12]<_awl_>Hi ! I upload pictures from a form to server. The only way to get no error is to set chmod as 777. Is this normal ??
[00:12]<_awl_>Otherwise a error occures (can 't access dir)
[00:12]<curr>_AxL_: Well, the webserver executing the PHP will need write access to the directory which the images are being uploaded.
[00:13]<_awl_>kuja: thanks ... so apache needs write access right ?
[00:13]<curr>Yes, which is what you did with the 777
[00:14]<curr>You made it writable for everyone
[00:14]<drvvdaa>That rocks.
[00:14]<_awl_>kuja: it s not very secure is it ?
[00:15]<-- svgvsdyzgjvr_ xrs>/dev/null")
[00:15]<curr>_AxL_: By secure, what do you mean?
[00:15]<fxyfyf>me eating pizza and beer on google's tab... also rocks :)
[00:15]<_awl_>kuja: well anyone could access/delete in the dir ?
[00:15]<crdfnn>hi
[00:16]<_awl_>kuja: or maybe on local system ? Right ? Outside it is not possible (in no securoty hole of course)
[00:17]<_awl_>(if no security hole)
[00:17]<curr>_AxL_: Remotely there is no threat unless your script provides direct access to your local system.
[00:17]<_awl_>Ok !!! So Chmod only apply on local access !
[00:18]<_awl_>Soory for confusion :\ ... Thanks
[00:19]<_awl_>kuja: Is apache usualy considered as a public user ? Not in a group ?
[00:20]<curr>Depends, usually on Debian, Apache runs under www-data:www-data
[00:20]<vwjmncj>is there any way to use a class variable in a function parameter... ala public function foo($test = $this->haha) {}
[00:21]<rdvxzrwff>twodeko, why you'd wana do that....
[00:21]<rusfyvr>it worked, thanks TML
[00:21]<vwjmncj>cythrawll, have some functions that the class default value would be nice for
[00:21]<_awl_>kuja: What do you mean by www-data:www-data ? Dir ? User ...:\
[00:21]<curr>twodeko: No.
[00:22]<curr>_AxL_: user/group
[00:22]<vwjmncj>out of curiosity, why is that a bad thing?
[00:22]<curr>twodeko: It's not a bad thing.
[00:22]<curr>It saves the trouble of doing: public function foo($test = null) { if (is_null($test)) $test = $this->haha; }
[00:23]<curr>Other languages will allow you to do this, PHP will not.
[00:23]<curr>(Some other languages)
[00:24]<_awl_>kuja: ok thanks !
[00:24]<vmmwno9q><?php echo substr('$myrow['phonenumber']', 1, 3);?> can you guys telling me why this is echoing
[00:24]<vmmwno9q>I'm probaly doing it wrong
[00:24]<drvvdaa>Well, your quotes need help.
[00:25]<wjlllrws>lol
[00:25]<vmmwno9q>""
[00:25]<_awl_>substr($myrow['phonenumber'], 1, 3); works ?
[00:25]<_awl_>No quotes
[00:25]<vmmwno9q>yes
