[02:12]<gndfrx>can someone help me find and solve the problem?
[02:13]<cxjmr>sloucher thanks
[02:13]<zyccydzzu>How can I figure out what sound card I have (laptop)?
[02:13]<ngvnznw>nemlah, What's the problem?
[02:13]<ngvnznw>Rikkimaru, run lspci and look for what it may be
[02:13]<cxjmr>does it matter what "server modules are loaded by default?"
[02:13]<mjjrrssj>micahcowan: just to confirm, it says not authorized to run, I used sudo last time, should I?
[02:13]<rgrg>holycow : /home/dan is not enough, lots of computer algebra systems with ugly (non-deb) installation are somewhere ``in the darkness''; by the way : say reinstall is the only choice, where is the list of my already installed Ubuntu-packages ?!
[02:14]<srggn>Rikkimaru: and lspci -vv gives even more info
[02:14]<smsmja>Rikkimaru, easiest way is to visit the manufactures web site
[02:14]<sfjuaxnz>Khoda: your killing me - if you don't know hit return
[02:14]<dyrrxrjwrg>Moocasso: no.
[02:14]<mjjrrssj>k, am I doing somethign wrong then?
[02:14]<cxjmr>sloucher: I'm a newb, sorry <3
[02:14]<zyccydzzu>Alright, I found the chipset, where can I get the drivers for an Intel audio chipset?
[02:14]<dyrrxrjwrg>not sure. Hang on a bit.
[02:14]<cxjmr>sloucher: if i dont ask, ill never know. but i'll keep hitting enter for your benefit :D
[02:14]<mjjrrssj>k :)
[02:14]<xjfdajw>gean, what does this mean --> lots of computer algebra systems with ugly (non-deb) installation are somewhere
[02:15]<ngvnznw>Where can I change how long the sudo password is saved for?
[02:15]<xjfdajw>gean, its not the only choice, just the easiest
[02:15]<rgrg>holycow : for instance SAGE, depending on pari, Singular, GAP, but also maple, magma, math, matlab, ...
[02:16]<xjfdajw>gean, so you can't reinstall those?
[02:16]<gndfrx>I can't get it to work.. i have read through lots of forums
[02:16]<cxjmr>how do i get back into gnome after i do the reconfig?
[02:16]<gndfrx>but can't find the solution
[02:16]<sfjuaxnz>khoda: you can read up on this stuff easy enough http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ - but i suspect for now you just want an interface
[02:16]<rgrg>holycow : pari installs through synaptic , say, but many others have own rules to get on the HD
[02:16]<gndfrx>the card is not recognized
[02:16]<xjfdajw>gean, you didn't convert from rpm - deb? okay
[02:17]<xjfdajw>gean, how much do you know about networking? all you would need is to get your network card up and connected
[02:17]<cxjmr>Should I install drivers for my vidcard before going back to the interface?
[02:17]<xjfdajw>you can reinstall everything from there
[02:18]<sfjuaxnz>khoda: the drivers should be there already. Or at least some basic drivers will be there already. I guess reconfig didn't work?
[02:18]<cxjmr>i'm not sure. im in console, how do i got back and test it
[02:18]<xuscd>http://de.fon.com/
[02:18]<rgrg>holycow : i can reinstall, but this is a big job, maple has for instance no easy install (have to rewrite code, rename needed lib's , etc), magma is also depending on ``very special libs'', i know it as i moved from knoppix to debian, and later from debian to ubuntu...
[02:18]<gndfrx>lspci -v
[02:18]<gndfrx>show the card
[02:18]<gndfrx>shows
[02:19]<gndfrx>when i start xtv i get two black screens
[02:19]<gndfrx>and i have to go to another console and kill it
[02:19]<xjfdajw>gean, *nod* i getcha
[02:19]<xuscd>http://en.fon.com/
[02:19]<cxjmr>sloucher: how do i get back to gnome?
[02:19]<sfjuaxnz>khoda: ctrl alt f7 might work - killing and restarting gdm would be better - for a newbie reboot
[02:20]<xjfdajw>gean, well i guess the first thing we can do is comment out all the other repos in your sources.list and just add your cdrom as a repo
[02:20]<cxjmr>what's gdm?
[02:20]<xjfdajw>gean, then you should be about to sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
[02:20]<rgrg>holycow: well, i try to survive...
[02:20]<mzzcnmwzzms>hello all, can anyone tell me the default permissions of /etc/ssl/private on Dapper?
[02:21]<sfjuaxnz>khoda gnome display manager - there's a lot to know doing it that way though like the commands ps and kill
[02:21]<`drgud>Any suggestions on getting MSN mail (HoTmail) to work w/ Evolution Mail?
[02:21]<cxjmr>sloucher: still hangs. should i try to do the reconfig again?
[02:22]<tj2dk>Have a problem dual-booting... Had Ubuntu installed first on an IDE drive a while back, now I need Windows to play a game. Removed the IDE drive (Windows refused to install while it was plugged in), and installed it to a SATA drive. Got it booted working and updated. Plugged the other drives back in, and added an entry for it in GRUB. When I tried to boot to it, I got a generic "Disk Error. Press any key to restart" message.
[02:22]<tj2dk>I can't boot to windows any more when that's the only HDD plugged in either.
[02:22]<sfjuaxnz>khoda: hard to tell what to do from here - reconfig has a chance to work. I think trying the install might be better to tell you becuase this should be configure for you easily.
[02:23]<`drgud>!email
[02:23]<cxjmr>sloucher: do you mean reinstall ubuntu?
[02:23]<u2jvu>I know nothing about email - try searching http://bots.ubuntulinux.nl/factoids.cgi?db=ubuntu
[02:23]<zsvzzjvx>I installed a lot of packages from automatix now, got some "couldnt get index file bla bla bla" on some packages, is that normal? everything installed correctly and works. also when it finished I updated some lib file that couldnt get authorised. Did this happend to me only or?
[02:23]<xjfdajw>what is apt setup command again?
[02:23]<xjfdajw>i thought it was apt-setup
[02:23]<sfjuaxnz>khoda: yeah, start over
[02:23]<cxjmr>kk
[02:23]<cxjmr>sloucher: whats the first command(s) i should run when i install?
[02:24]<zsvzzjvx>khoda, are you doing a server install?
[02:24]<cxjmr>astaroth: yes, its the only kind i'm aware of.
[02:24]<cxjmr>:)
[02:24]<zsvzzjvx>ok
[02:24]<zsvzzjvx>I had to do that too
[02:24]<cxjmr>do what?
[02:24]<zsvzzjvx>Cuz the live cd didnt work with my hardware
[02:24]<zsvzzjvx>do a server install
[02:24]<dyrrxrjwrg>Moocasso, what's the exact message?
[02:25]<cxjmr>astaroth: i actually used livecd first by accident. i want it on my harddrive.
[02:25]<sfjuaxnz>khoda: you try the live cd?
[02:25]<mzzcnmwzzms>anyone willing to just check a file perm for me?
[02:25]<cxjmr>sloucher: i did it by accident. i got into the desktop and it was all messed up (gfx and stuff). couldnt click a thing
[02:25]<mjjrrssj>you mean when I try to start up with the command in .xsession?
[02:25]<zsvzzjvx>well, just make sure your /etc/apt/sources.list points to dapper, then do sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop. that´s all I did
[02:25]<2nzrau2n>markedwards~ on your computer? From here?
[02:25]<srggn>TobyK: did you check your BIOS settings for the bott device? Just a guess...
[02:26]<rgrg>holycow : i tried it after that apt-cdrom -m add, think i have to try it again, my problems are : no x, no internet connection: maybe i have to insure the correct install of the x-based tool for installation... only chance i see: live cd, get a small partition, install there ubuntu, copy computer algebra system dir tree from the old breezy and then get rid of it ! Thanks for the help ! I'm moving to the other computer at the other end of the
[02:26]<rgrg>faculty !
[02:26]<mzzcnmwzzms>Bergcube: no, just want to know the permissions of /etc/ssl/private/ on a default install
[02:26]<sfjuaxnz>khoda: that don't sound promising - the server cd works too though like astaroth says
[02:26]<mzzcnmwzzms>I hade to do g+r on mine, and I want to know if that is default
[02:26]<2nzrau2n>markedwards~ ok, I'll peek. BRB.
[02:26]<gruscy>hmmh
[02:26]<cxjmr>sloucher: im reinstalling, lets see what i get
[02:26]<mzzcnmwzzms>Bergcube: thanks!
[02:26]<mjjrrssj>micahcowan? Do you mean when I'm starting up with the command in .xsession?
[02:26]<xjfdajw>gean, well backup all your data first anyway
[02:27]<zsvzzjvx>Again: (Since I am starting to get paranoid if I am the only one): I installed a lot of packages from automatix now, got some "couldnt get index file bla bla bla" on some packages, is that normal? everything installed correctly and works. also when it finished I updated some lib file that couldnt get authorised. Did this happend to me only or?
[02:27]<mrmfyfjv>markedwards, looks like it's owned by root, and perms are 700 - read/write/exec only by owner
[02:27]<-- 2yd2nzy xrs fuyv>http://iownmymusic.org/ http://iownmydvds.org/ .")
[02:27]<2nzrau2n>markedwards~ 700
