[06:25]<drsgylr`>brasko, try a symlink in /usr/bin symlink it to a different name the reason its not working is that it looks in PATH in order to find the executable so if you have java in bin before your local path then itll use the first it finds
[06:25]<rm2>brasko: what does 'java -version' tell you?
[06:26]<bzjrmrrsv>hey
[06:26]<bzjrmrrsv>andrewski, what after sudo -i?
[06:26]<drsgylr`>brasko, in order, as in the first listed is the first looked in
[06:26]<zgmznwscy>Broadcast: enter... then your password (yours, not root's) and you'll become root. then... be careful. ^_^
[06:27]<wysnomm>hey all. sb wana help a n00b? cant play a dvd, cant figure out why not...
[06:27]<vzyvyud>andrewski: got your answer there? :)
[06:27]<rm2>brasko: If it's gcj then your options are to install the sun-java5 packages from multiverse or install java5 in /opt and modify your PATH statement. I'd not recommend messing with symlinks in /usr/bin.
[06:27]<vjxnffwyvxga>anybody here know which files i should edit to setup alsa properly?
[06:27]<zgmznwscy>tritium: certainly not, but i know that PATA == IDE. :)
[06:27]<zgmznwscy>ToHellWithGA: i'm not sure; it should Just Work. :-S
[06:28]<bzjrmrrsv>andrewski, Yeah, well i want to change permission and give my account, not the root, root access
[06:28]<zgmznwscy>Broadcast: that's a bad idea.
[06:28]<bzjrmrrsv>why?
[06:28]<zgmznwscy>Broadcast: use sudo or sudo -i when you need access, otherwise don't let yourself break your system accidentally.
[06:29]<zgmznwscy>!sudo
[06:29]<u2jvu>sudo is a command to run programs with superuser privileges ("root"). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for all information.
[06:29]<vjxnffwyvxga>andrewski: wow. that's terribly helpful :P anybody want to not be a clown and help me with sound problems?
[06:29]<2zrscj>gdb: I installed sun-java5-jdk
[06:29]<2zrscj>gdb: Do you use cgdb?
[06:29]<bzjrmrrsv>k, thanks a lot andrewski
[06:29]<sxzylxrgy>cool xubuntu is running
[06:29]<zgmznwscy>ToHellWithGA: i'm not being a clown, sorry if it came off that way. i'm being sympathetic to the fact that your sound's not working and that you've asked a few times to no avail. i've been there, it's just been far too long.
[06:29]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: whee again!
[06:30]<sxzylxrgy>i mean xfce is
[06:30]<drsgylr`>gdb, why do you not recommend a simple symlink in bin?
[06:30]<sxzylxrgy>i want to know if xfce is better than gome
[06:30]<2zrscj>Dasnipa`: he's a debugger, he doesn't like to create problems
[06:30]<2zrscj>shriphani: yes, it is
[06:30]<vzyvyud>shriphani: they each have their pros and cons
[06:30]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: faster, yes. better? hard to say. it doesn't do as much for you or as integrated as gnome does, but it's certainly very good.
[06:31]<2zrscj>shriphani: I use gnome though
[06:31]<gjynsdj>xfce rocks!
[06:31]<2zrscj>shriphani: and have never tried xfce
[06:31]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: yes, but i use gnome. fast computer here. :)
[06:31]<sxzylxrgy>so you dont recommend me to get rid of gnome ?
[06:31]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: xfce on my desktop or when i need the resources.
[06:31]<wysnomm>help! I just neeeed somebody, not just anybody... heeeeeelpp... *bad music on my brain*
[06:31]<drsgylr`>brasko, i know how that goes i work in a software testing lab... but ive never had a problem with the symlinks
[06:31]<sxzylxrgy>because i have memory problems
[06:31]<2zrscj>Dasnipa`: hehe, OK
[06:31]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: no, i wouldn't recommend it. in fact, my best experience was running gnome-panel in xfce, but that may not be good for memory problems.
[06:32]<ffrv>brasko: you would say "he doesn't like to create problems" after gdb crashed on me today :)
[06:32]<yddn-ndjsjf>Any of you guys remember how I was asking why I couldn't go to tty1-6 anymore... ?
[06:32]<yddn-ndjsjf>'cause I think I found the problem... :P
[06:32]<dzjrpzjrrd>i have a smbfs mounted volume. is there a way to nicely handle what happens when im away from my network?
[06:32]<sxzylxrgy>so i must keep gnome on ?
[06:32]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: you don't have to, but it won't hurt anything but hard drive space.
[06:32]<sxzylxrgy>yes
[06:33]<xzzzd>so, is anybody running Edgy Eft yet?
[06:33]<sxzylxrgy>what extra can you do with gnome or xfce ?
[06:33]<zgmznwscy>haary: last i heard, it wasn't a good idea yet; too much changing.
[06:33]<zpzu_dgvnz_pfd>How do i run rpm installers in ubuntu?
[06:33]<eyrryg>can anybody help me real quick
[06:34]<zgmznwscy>!alien > aqau_inter_fly
[06:34]<eyrryg>my issue is probably really simple
[06:34]<zgmznwscy>ziggin: just ask
[06:34]<sxzylxrgy>aqau_inter_fly, convert rpm to deb ??
[06:34]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: in gnome you'll probably never have to edit a config file by hand.
[06:34]<zpzu_dgvnz_pfd>shriphani: no idea...whatever works
[06:34]<eyrryg>I am trying to install Drake as a VMware image
[06:34]<szvzpvnzx>whats a good software firewall?
[06:34]<sxzylxrgy>oh and xfce i need to config everything ?
[06:34]<gjynsdj>satafterh, firrestarter
[06:34]<lzjlxnv>whats a good bit torrent client?
[06:34]<eyrryg>I tried Desktop but I couldnt get it to work right
[06:34]<gjynsdj>satafterh, firestarter
[06:34]<eyrryg>Im assuming because they made that one a LiveCD
[06:34]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: no, but there are a few settings you can't set in the GUI.
[06:34]<sxzylxrgy>prophet, bit-torrents ?
[06:34]<szvzpvnzx>thx
[06:35]<pyzsvcryrxv>prophet, azureus
[06:35]<sxzylxrgy>enlighten me please andrewski
[06:35]<zgmznwscy>shriphani: many more panel applets in gnome too.
[06:35]<eyrryg>couldnt get it to work right as in I couldnt install it
[06:35]<vznvjz>prophet: torrentflux
[06:35]<2zrscj>can i just modify /etc/alternatives? or is this maintained by some tool?
[06:35]<lzjlxnv>thanks
[06:35]<2zrscj>the 'javac' link is pointing to 1.5.0 and 'java' is pointing to 1.42 (gjc)
[06:35]<2zrscj>i think that's the problem
[06:36]<sxzylxrgy>ok so i must carry out installations in gnome then ?
[06:36]<g1zdysd>!format
[06:36]<vjxnffwyvxga>i need an asound.conf file
[06:36]<u2jvu>Partitioning programs: !GParted or QTParted - Formatting partitions: see the manual page for mkfs ("man mkfs") - Mounting partitions in Gnome: System -> Administration -> Disks
[06:36]<eyrryg>is there something Im doing wrong
[06:36]<bzjrmrrsv>ok
[06:36]<2zrscj>shriphani: xfce rocks, use it
[06:36]<vjxnffwyvxga>anybody know why i would not have an asound.conf file for alsa?
[06:36]<bzjrmrrsv>i have a paste
[06:36]<bzjrmrrsv>how do i?
[06:36]<eyrryg>or do I need to use the server version
[06:36]<bzjrmrrsv>!gksu gedit /etc/fstab
[06:36]<u2jvu>I know nothing about gksu gedit /etc/fstab - try searching http://bots.ubuntulinux.nl/factoids.cgi?db=ubuntu
[06:36]<rrvscuf>anyone have sound problems after the latest kernel update ?
[06:36]<dzjrpzjrrd>does anyone here have win32codecs working and can play videos in firefox?
[06:36]<rrvscuf>er s/kernel//
