[08:21]<sxzzds>fyrestrtr++
[08:21]<zzvn>24-bit, right.
[08:21]<zzvn>Not 24 colours.
[08:21]<pdznsvzvz>grte: yeap :)
[08:21]<zzvn>Sorry, thinking in terms of colours rather then bits.
[08:21]<sxzzds>grte: 8^24 colors kindof.
[08:22]<pdznsvzvz>24 bits is "millions of colors" in Windows.
[08:22]<zzvn>In that case, setting elinks to 256 colours shouldn't be an issue...
[08:22]<zzvn>Yeah, I understand the differences between colour depths in bits, I was just thinking in the wrong context.
[08:22]<pdznsvzvz>grte: nope, it shouldn't. But seeing as how you are already in X, try that little button that launches firefox :)
[08:22]<bzjrmrrsv>how do i know the password of my root account
[08:22]<zzvn>fyrestrtr: I prefer epiphany, myself.
[08:23]<sxzzds>Broadcast: there is no password, read the document.
[08:23]<sxzzds>!tell broadcast about sudo
[08:23]<pdznsvzvz>there is no password. You use your own password with sudo to execute commands as root.
[08:23]<pdznsvzvz>grte: or that.
[08:23]<zzvn>But I just like being able to work effectively in a terminal.
[08:24]<zzvn>Plus...The command line just feels more natural for me.
[08:24]<pdznsvzvz>grte: if you want to learn quickly, then just run in console mode a few days. That'll put some hair on your chest ... especially if you are new to linux.
[08:24]<sxzzds>grte: in the case 256 colors should suffice.
[08:24]<xyllynq1>thanks
[08:24]<zzvn>fyrestrtr: Not /too/ new, been running Ubuntu for about a year now.
[08:25]<zzvn>I mean, I know my way around the console, just that particular piece of information wasn't something I had looked into before.
[08:25]<xyllynq1>I think it only worked for my Xgl session, will it work for KDE and xfce as well?
[08:25]<pdznsvzvz>grte: imnsho -- unless you did something like a from scratch gentoo install, or lfs install -- you are very new to linux :)
[08:25]<zzvn>I'm not a pro by any stretch, but I can get stuff done.
[08:25]<pdznsvzvz>hippie23: you'll have to do the equivalent in kde and xfce, I don't know what is the equivalent file.
[08:25]<zzvn>Well, if it helps, my first experience with linux was a RedHat 6.1 install.
[08:26]<zzvn>I never did get X working, so I just used the tty.
[08:26]<pdznsvzvz>grte: I feel your pain.
[08:26]<sxzzds>fyrestrtr: your place isn't to judge that, lfs and gentoo does not a linux expert make.
[08:26]<xyllynq1>ok
[08:26]<xyllynq1>ill figure it out
[08:26]<zzvn>That particular experience was why I didn't use linux until Ubuntu. More's the pity for me.
[08:26]<pdznsvzvz>sharms: neither does ubuntu, but atleast when you are compiling a kernel in gentoo -- you get to learn a bit more about linux :)
[08:26]<xyllynq1>thanks
[08:26]<xyllynq1>have a good evening
[08:27]<pdznsvzvz>8:24 AM here -- soo good evening to you, and hello coffee to me :)
[08:27]<vxjznruluvya_>fyrestrtr: --->> #gentoo ;-)
[08:27]<zzvn>Anways, I learned what I needed to know. Thanks for the help, guys.,
[08:27]<cu>Gah, I can't decide between ubuntu and kubuntu! I uninstalled kubuntu and just reinstalled kubuntu, but now I want to go back
[08:27]<pdznsvzvz>thoreauputic_: was running gentoo for 3 years, its a great distro.
[08:27]<cu>reinstalled ubuntu&
[08:27]<vxjznruluvya_>fyrestrtr: I didn't say it wasn't :)
[08:27]<pdznsvzvz>ku: just install ubuntu-desktop ( sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop )
[08:28]<cu>fyrestrtr: can i do that the other way too?
[08:28]<pdznsvzvz>ku: what do you mean?
[08:28]<zyvnz>I was editing /etc/postgresql/8.1/main/pg_hba.conf remotely via an ssh session which I lost connection. Now even on the target machine, gedit just returns. Can anyone help please ?
[08:28]<cu>like install kubuntu desktop on ubuntu?
[08:28]<vzzug>river: returns?
[08:28]<sxzzds>fyrestrtr: the deal is, use the right tool for the right job. If I am a 12 year old kid with a lot of freetime, then it is sensible to waste my time compiling a kernel and all my packages. If I am a real person in the real world with normal circumstances, I would choose a distribution with real package management.
[08:28]<pdznsvzvz>sure, just install kubuntu-desktop
[08:28]<slzjyrryn>weird. much as i like the human theme, the gtk look and feel looks horrendous in netbeans
[08:29]<vxjznruluvya_>ku: you'll get the choice at the login screen
[08:29]<vzyvyud>sharms: well said ;)
[08:29]<vxjznruluvya_>after installing it
[08:29]<pdznsvzvz>sharms: sorry, but if that was a stab at gentoo -- you got it so wrong. Gentoo's package management is far better than most distros.
[08:29]<slzjyrryn>i guess gnome widgets don't look so good when they're laid out densely. kinda like osx that way
[08:29]<zyvnz>varum: yes if I gedit in terminal window, it just returns to the command prompt and the gedit window never starts
[08:29]<g1zdysd>!tell n3rdism about women
[08:29]<vxjznruluvya_>fyrestrtr: discussion of gentoo --> #ubuntu-offtopic
[08:30]<slzjyrryn>fyrestrtr: their package management is great, yes. their release engineering is, meh.
[08:30]<vzyvyud>n3rdism: don't abuse the bot, please
[08:30]<cu>thoreauputic_: ? I have Ubuntu already installed. I installed Kubuntu first, but was annoyed by some things so I installed this... but now I want to go back to Kubuntu ^^. I know at this rate, I'm never going to settle with one
[08:30]<pdznsvzvz>sproingie: well that's another ball-o-wax ;)
[08:30]<rrr-je>What is the recommended way to automatically mount smb filesystems on boot with Dapper?
[08:30]<g1zdysd>tritium: sorry lol >.<
[08:30]<sxzzds>n3rdism: if you want to play with the bot you can also /msg it instead
[08:30]<slzjyrryn>fyrestrtr: debian's release engineering is second to none, including the best commercial outfits
[08:30]<zyvnz>varun: fyi, I run 'sudo gedit /etc/postgresql/8.1/main/pg_hba.conf'
[08:30]<vxjznruluvya_>ku: if you install kubuntu-desktop you'll have both
[08:30]<pdznsvzvz>ku: you can have both, just choose what session you want to login to.
[08:31]<vxjznruluvya_>ku: same distro, different desktops
[08:31]<cu>ooh icic
[08:31]<vxjznruluvya_>:)
[08:31]<pdznsvzvz>sproingie: so true. It seems a bit more polished.
[08:31]<cu>yay... installing ^^
[08:31]<zyvnz>varum: it simply returns to the command prompt in the temrinal window and the gedit window never opens
[08:32]<wnnw>i'm trying to install ndiswrapper but apparently hoary 5.4 comes with gcc 3.3, I'm trying to upgrade to gcc 3.4 but the upgrade doesn't seem to help the compile
[08:32]<pdznsvzvz>River: are you doing that from a remote shell session?
[08:32]<cu>Thanks thoreauputic_ and fyrestrtr, you guys saved me from reinstalling the OS like 20 times ^^
[08:32]<cu>Now I'ma go have a cigarette while I wait for this thing to download.
[08:32]<vxjznruluvya_>ku: you will be asked if you want gdm ( gnome login) or kdm (KDE login screen)
[08:32]<pdznsvzvz>weex: upgrade to dapper -- wireless works a lot better.
[08:32]<cu>k
[08:32]<wnnw>how long would that take and how would i do it?
[08:32]<vxjznruluvya_>ku: either is fine - matter of preference
[08:33]<zyvnz>fyrestrtr: I did originaly, but I lost the connection. Now the same command on the target machine simply returns to the terminal prompt
[08:33]<pdznsvzvz>weex: long depends on your internet connection, as for the how, see !upgrade
[08:33]<vyfarays>Argh. I have UN-installed and RE-installed SQL 3 times now, and there are still conflicts. Anytime I try to change something about a user, it claims there is already a duplicate user and I should pick another username. How do I nuke SQL off my system entirely?
[08:33]<wnnw>!upgrade
[08:33]<u2jvu>Upgrading to Ubuntu 5.10 breezy -> http://wiki.ubuntu.com/BreezyUpgrade Upgrading to Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUpgrades Note: gksudo "update-manager -d" always updates to the latest development version.
[08:33]<vzzug>river: this is in X?
[08:33]<pdznsvzvz>River: well gedit needs an X session. You had better use something like vi or pico
[08:33]<wnnw>fyrestrtr: thanks will do
[08:33]<zyvnz>varun: yes dapper gnome session in a terminal window
[08:33]<pdznsvzvz>Vilkacis: sudo apt-get remove --purge whatever-package
[08:34]<vxjznruluvya_>fyrestrtr: actually in ubuntu pico is a symlonk to nano - not that it matters
[08:34]<vxjznruluvya_>*symlink
[08:34]<pdznsvzvz>thoreauputic_: lol nice. Atleast they didn't do something like symlink vim to emacs. I would just die.
